The best review of this watch. I really enjoyed viewing it and have subscribed to your channel. This watch is a real sleeper in the UK, I think the price is maybe a factor, however, if you study the heritage then you'll enjoy every moment you wear it. Thanks for a great viewing experience.

Great case and dial but too bad for the subpar 6R movement with its erratic timekeeping throughout its slap-dash 70hr power reserve. Looking forward to Seiko upping their game with a decent high beat movement for their SPB lines.

I understand that people frown on 6R movements as they are quite unrefined for a watch in this price range. Nonetheless, I have found them to be immensely reliable on the 5 watches I have. Once they are fully wound, on the wrist, they are accurate … just don’t put it on a timegrapher as it will freak you out. Finally, they are as cheap as chips to service, contrary to my Omega Seamaster… ouch!

@@edteach3r May I ask how much did you pay for servicing the 6R? Did you send it to Seiko, or was the service performed by a local watchmaker? I'm asking because 6R movements are not offered outside of Seiko, if I'm not mistaken. What if a local watchmaker needs a spare part?

@@kresimirpleic I service them at my Seiko AD. Hisao Yokota is a 75 year-old who used to work for Seiko in the 60s. If I remember correctly, last year a service in my Trurtle cost me $140 Canadian. Hisao doesn’t only dismantle the movement entirely, he actually regulates it to within 5 seconds accuracy per day.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket metal bracelet that is designed to fit this SPB317J1? I thought maybe the willard bracelets from Uncle straps might work but not certain if the angles of the bracelet at the lugs would line up correctly.

The 6R35 is quoted from seiko to have a wide range of -15/+25 sec/day from factory but in reality in my experience they have kept around -7/+8 seconds a day. Unfortunately with Seiko your experience may vary per watch

Agree, my new 4 day old 317 it's so erratic, a 25 second gain in 30minutes, so its going back for a warranty adjustment, this is rediculous for a $1,400.00 watch 👎

@@robalexander7348 Even brand new, all it takes is a brief rendezvous with a magnet and it’ll magnetise. Usually results in running quite a few minutes fast per day like yours. May have happened in the shop, in the post or since you’ve had it. Run a compass over it and see if the needle moves.

I love(d) this watch. But I returned it. It's just not worth €1000! Bezel play feels cheap, grindy feeling when turning the crown and I had a misaligned bezel as well. Max €500.

I agree. Last week I bought the SPB333J1 as I already have a few black and blue Seiko divers. The white/silver birch dial is spectacular and I love the bracelet; but, if I am totally honest, the black-dialed SPB317J1 is still the pick of the slim turtles.

Nice reissue except for price being twice as much as a King Turtle. I bought blue and green Steeldive homages of this for $135 each with sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert and NH35 Seiko movement. Good review.

The handset on the Steeldive is inferior, and the bezel does not look like a ceramic. And even if it is, the whole point of this model is that it's a throw-back. A ceramic bezel ruins that. The movement is a downgrade on the SD. The SD has a beveled crystal, which is incorrect, and you get that horribly ugly Steeldive logo. 🤮

Just picked this one up and absolutely love it. I do wish they framed the date the same way as they did for the Seiko Street Tuna SRPF83. For me a watch is only 50% useful if it doesn’t have a date complication, good review tho

The watch is not "missing a ceramic bezel"; it's a throw-back to a watch that didn't have a ceramic bezel. What is it with you ceramic bezel fetishists? A ceramic bezel would have ruined the look and defeated the point here.

Are you alright? Just checking as you seem quite invested. Ceramic bezels, aluminum bezels it would be nice to have more options in general. I’m in the camp that enjoys both and would love to see Seiko use this case with modern features. Just my opinion.
