This is so classic. My mother and I watched this when it first aired and died laughing. This was visiting my grandparents, her parents, in Miami. Sleeping on the sofabed and NO air conditioning. They had it, they just wouldn't turn it on. And that was my grandfather with the driving directions! Whoever wrote this knew their material!

No AC in Florida...That house would be like a furnace.

not true. Most older houses in the south were built in the tree shade and there is always a breeze from the Gulf. Temperatures are in the high 70s in that setting year round, AC is just to remove humidity out of it. But in the direct SUN, about 150F

In S. Florida, where Boca is and where Sienfeld's parents live in this tv show, it is only cool enough o go w/o a/c in the winter. Otherwise it will be hot and muggy as hell. Now maybe some do live w/o a/c but their home would be very stinky believe me. Because it would be like living in a hot house.
@dukester5419
@dukester5419 8 жыл бұрын
Y10Q,You don't know shit about living in Florida if you think Boca condo living is either old construction or built under shade trees. Those condos will be like a sauna except in the winter for 2 months maximum and that is if it is a normal year. And to think the homes built in Florida in the old days were all under shade trees is another falsehood.

Even as a 90s kid this was so relatable with a family full of elderly people. If I was going to someone's house for say, Father's Day, I knew I'd drop several pounds via sweat while being asked, "You're hot?" even though I appeared to have gone swimming.

This happens to all older people from NY when they move to Florida. For the first few months the AC is on non-stop. Then they get acclimated to the heat and because they're always cold anyway 87 degrees becomes 'room-temperature'. I remember baking inside an older relative's house, fanning myself with a magazine while they were perfectly comfortable.

My grandparents would live in Florida from November-March and it seems like they never used the AC, and oh yeah the pull out couch was comfortable in the slightest. This episode is bang on with the satire of South Florida.

My grandparents lived in Georgia and refused to turn the A/C on until the dead of summer when the humidity outside was near 100% with 95+ degree temperature. When I lived with them during high school, I had to sleep practically naked with a fan pointed on me. Lmao

That's like how my in-laws' house was. They live down on the Texas/Mexico and refused to have AC in their house. It was ridiculous! The only thing they had was this thing called a "swamp cooler" which would throw mist out, so it was not only over 100 degrees, but was humid & moist. The swamp cooler was a breeding ground for mosquitoes, too, so it was like sleeping in the Amazon rain forest. I always wanted to stay at a hotel, but in a lot of TexMex families, hotels are out of the question. Why waste money staying in comfort & privacy, when you can stay in a mosquito hatchery?

One weekend years ago I spent the weekend with my grandparents and they would only use the air conditioning once in awhile. I got so hot I couldn't stand it and I begged them to turn it on. Older people, especially people in their 80's and 90's just don't feel the heat like younger people do and they don't understand.

This was like when I stayed with my family at my parents friend’s house. It was 100 degrees F outside in Colorado. The house owner didn’t want to pay to have air conditioner on. I’m grateful for him letting us stay there, but Jesus Christ I could barely get up the stairs without having to take a breath. The water on my night stand was evaporating.

I live in Ireland so I can't really relate. When it gets too cold people just tell me to put on a jumper. I can put up with that. No what I hate the most is when its the middle of Winter and people open windows on the top floor of the bus. I go to college far away. It's a two hour bus trip and I have to get up very early and come home late so in the Winter its usually dark and therefore colder. The top floor of Dublin buses generally don't have heating. People get too warm though and instead of taking off their warm winter jackets, they open up the window at their seat. The part of the window that opens is above their head. Air streams out and cools them a little but the majority of flows in a bitter cold breeze to every seat behind their seat. So people who are already cold are getting blasted in the face by more cold. I'd sit downstairs where it's closer to the warm engine but than air travels in from the open doors every time the bus stops and it's worse. People who make everyone colder (or warmer) than their comfort to suit their own comfort when they could literally add or remove layers are evil.

I've met people like this. You'll plead with them to put the air conditioning on, they'll protest that they don't even know how to work it. They'll eventually turn it on. It will be on for 20 minutes and then you'll realise they've turned it off again. Leaving you in a position where you can't possibly ask them to turn it on again.

My mom (70) is the opposite. She’ll have the air con on 10C when it’s only 20C outside but until it drops to like 0C, she won’t turn on the heater and she REFUSES to have the heater on at night even when it’s below freezing, so I back when I lived at home, I had to wear wool socks and a sweatshirt to bed in the winter time and when I woke up in the morning, I could see my breath. No, my mom is not even a teensy bit poor. She’s got a terrific career and a great house in a wonderful neighbourhood. She’s just weird.
