This is so classic. My mother and I watched this when it first aired and died laughing. This was visiting my grandparents, her parents, in Miami. Sleeping on the sofabed and NO air conditioning. They had it, they just wouldn't turn it on. And that was my grandfather with the driving directions! Whoever wrote this knew their material!

In S. Florida, where Boca is and where Sienfeld's parents live in this tv show, it is only cool enough o go w/o a/c in the winter. Otherwise it will be hot and muggy as hell. The swamp cooler was a breeding ground for mosquitoes, too, so it was like sleeping in the Amazon rain forest. I live in Ireland so I can't really relate. When it gets too cold people just tell me to put on a jumper. I can put up with that. No what I hate the most is when its the middle of Winter and people open windows on the top floor of the bus. I go to college far away. It's a two hour bus trip and I have to get up very early and come home late so in the Winter its usually dark and therefore colder. The top floor of Dublin buses generally don't have heating. People get too warm though and instead of taking off their warm winter jackets, they open up the window at their seat. The part of the window that opens is above their head. Air streams out and cools them a little but the majority of flows in a bitter cold breeze to every seat behind their seat. So people who are already cold are getting blasted in the face by more cold. I'd sit downstairs where it's closer to the warm engine but than air travels in from the open doors every time the bus stops and it's worse. People who make everyone colder (or warmer) than their comfort to suit their own comfort when they could literally add or remove layers are evil.

If the bar was in her back, why didn't she just move the pillows and sleep horizontal at the foot of the bed or something?

You've obviously never slept on one of those. It's like lying on top of a pile of bicycles

I've met people like this. You'll plead with them to put the air conditioning on, they'll protest that they don't even know how to work it. They'll eventually turn it on. It will be on for 20 minutes and then you'll realise they've turned it off again. Leaving you in a position where you can't possibly ask them to turn it on again.

The violent writhing around in desperate and seemingly endless futile attempt to get comfortable in a terrible bed is so utterly perfect.

My mom (70) is the opposite. She’ll have the air con on 10C when it’s only 20C outside but until it drops to like 0C, she won’t turn on the heater and she REFUSES to have the heater on at night even when it’s below freezing, so I back when I lived at home, I had to wear wool socks and a sweatshirt to bed in the winter time and when I woke up in the morning, I could see my breath. No, my mom is not even a teensy bit poor. She’s got a terrific career and a great house in a wonderful neighbourhood. She’s just weird.
