Seize the Day (1986) Robin Williams - 16:9 Widescreen

One of Robin Williams' first pieces of fine dramatic film acting, wherein he plays Tommy Wilhelm; a good, honest man, living the year 1956, who's fallen on hard times after losing his job. Yet, what really gets to Tommy is seeing both his friends and family turning their backs on him, one after the other, while he's in his greatest time of need. We watch all of his strong efforts to succeed in a world, where all the cards are stacked against him, as he tries in vain to seize the day.
Originally shown on American public television as part of their "Great Performances" series, and shot using a 4:3 aspect ratio for television viewing at the time. Once again, I've re-edited the original footage to create a widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio version.

This film is different from what Hollywood normally dishes out.Theres a man in crisis here who has a cold,cruel father,a con as a friend and a witch of an ex wife.He is in deep trouble and his situation is hopeless.Nobody can help him.I was hoping that some miracle will happen to change his plight but not here,certainly not a feel good sort of movie.This is how hellish some people's lives are in the real world.Robin Williams,a master of his craft,but gone too soon.I miss the man.❤

Very depressing and extremely sad film. To think that some people live this depicted reality in real life. What a wickedly cruel, selfish and unsympathetic man his father was and the friend he trusted, Captain, betrayed him. His wife was a selfish woman as well ... Watching this film, I couldn't help thinking what an incredible actor Robin Williams was, drawing on his own unpleasant experiences, depressed and troubled mind. Rest in Peace, dear and talented one. true! As a child, I used to love watching Mork and Mindy! I love him so much, he knew he had the love of people I cannot understand why he took his life, knowing how much other people loved him. If he knocked on my door I would have let him in because he gave me so much laughter when I needed it the most. I would have helped him, asked him what can I do ? Please do not take your life, there must be something we can do. I feel helpless when I cannot help people and this is because they close themselves, they fill themselves with negative thoughts and cannot fight them or are too proud to ask for help.

I saw this movie on VHS when we were stationed in Lahr, West Germany in 1987. I thought that this film was shown in the theatres back in Canada and the US. I didn't know until today that it was made for and shown only on PBS. Thank you for showing this gem of a film. So depressing and yet so amazing. Robin and Jerry Stiller are fantastic together.

In my personal opinion, Robin Williams was more than a successful "casted" performer. He always was over the top, differently intensive as well sympathetic to any role he used to play. His mimicry will last legendary, no question about that. I'd rather assert: a real talented misfit genius in order to please constantly the "Industry". Watching someone as a much younger man (or woman) in an old film, seems a bit like time travel to me. It’s like looking through a pane of glass into 1986. We know what happened to Robin a few years after this was filmed. We know Robin’s future. We know - and he doesn’t. It feels like I could break the glass and reach through and tell him. But then what if a time traveller from 2050 were to reach through the pane of glass and tell us, living in 2023, what lies ahead of each one of us. Would we want to know? I honestly don’t know anybody in my own life who had a peaceful death. That’s a very sad and very scary thought.

I think that every single film that Robin Williams ( wonderfull and versatile person) made, reflects part of himself and his past. In this time he is a Man who represents the transgenerational conflict that sometimes limits the optimal development of a human. And he does it in a masterful way. When I knew he died, I thought about his characters in many of his films, acting as a person very inteligent, smart, sensitive,fighther, poet,artist, and too fragile to live on this planet. ( as he really was). In any case, he has given us a lot to continue growing internally, optimally, honoring his short and intense life. Thanks once again.

Through all the laughter he gave us, I believe this is what his life was like, everyone wanting something until there was nothing left emotionally. My heart was breaking for him, all way through. It was a rare occasion to watch a drama because I ma unable to take the pain that is portrayed but I could not help watching it all the way through. The way he smoked and the nerves, and all that went on just made me anxious, too. The only thing I know is that when you get away from God, all your life eventually comes tumbolling down. That's what happened to him, and that's what happened to my own mother too. If you go away from the Lord u will be sorry.

Yes., you are correct. More accurately I suppose that's all I did was reformat this film, along with a few others. However, I completely re-edited the bastard James Bond film, "Never Say Never Again." I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts about that if you're a Bond fan too. I'm using this re-cut as a part of my resume, doing my best to and get my foot in the door as an editor at EON/MGM.

Lots of points for reflection on life nicely knitted together here. Naturally it gets ugly, at times verging on the surreal which is actually how intensifying stress can begin to feel. Flashbacks are used sparingly and effectively in the first half. I particularly appreciated the honest reason Tommy gives for not wanting to go into medicine. His father doesn't quite come across as the sort of doctor who put his patients first never mind his own son. Things haven't quite worked out the way the old man wanted either even though he has done well enough out of life. Well acted as ever by Robin Williams with some decent support. I wasn't quite convinced by the period aspect (1956) but that doesn't get in the way of the story. The virtual absence of music probably helped with the focus - nothing worth listening to on the car radio and the TV off station seem to be reinforcing that message. More than worth a watch. 4/5

Wow, that was worth watching. Robin's performance playing Tommy was pretty convincing and I can not help feeling that Robin was drawing from his own real-life experiences. I felt very angry when I heard about his death, but watching this movie and the way he played the part and knowing now what we know about his life I understand his actions (don't agree with it). I wish that he was still with us.

Of course Robin Williams was absolutely mesmerizing BUT watching Jerry Stiller as a much younger man than his roles in Seinfeld and The King of Queens was a real treat for me. Jerry Stiller and his very talented Wife Ann Mira started in vaudeville,, look where that start, a ton of guts and hard work took them in the movies and television business.

Watched for the first time. Relate to the Big Crash in his life around 40 years of age. By 40 people believe you - yourself included - should be so "Set-in-Life". Williams was quite unique, and I really enjoy some of his movies like Patch Adams & Bicentennial Man - to name a few. Interesting how a Job - or lack of One - can emulate how someone is supposed to be according to them and yourself. How you react - including the mental crap you obsess over - determines who you really are. The addition of Jerry Stiller to the story is a highlight. Glenne Headley does quite well in her support and advice to Tommy. As Tommy says: "Is that what it comes down to - Money?" Sit back and enjoy. Not bad. Thank you.
