"wards off mosquitoes like a champ". I like your sense of humor. Excellent video and reasonable approach with very good repair work, to getting this MC operating again. I've very recently been enlightened to the JD MC with multiple MC KZbin videos. I've have what I think is a '48 MC, that's sitting in my barn for about 40 years. It's a classic ran when parked unit. I pulled it out into sun light in just the past few days and cleaned it up with hopes to get it operating. KZbin is the best for info on anything and everything and a great source for inspiration and motivation. My MC has original fenders and what look like the original tracks with almost no wear. Thanks for sharing the video and your work. Well done.

Dave, thank you! That sounds like a fantastic barn find, I wish the lowers on mine were in that good of shape. Best of luck bringing it back to life!

@@RustyRescues The guy that last ran my MC is still around. I'm going to call him. There is some spare tune-up parts on a shelf and 2 unopened quarts of factory JD green paint. I haven't tried to rotate the motor yet, but everything else is moving fine. I also have an old 12' JD wheel disc that I occasionally use. The MC may have been used to pull it in the past. Now, a 1980 Hesston 665 CM is the crawler I use. Thanks again for sharing your MC video and details of your work. Great stuff.

I think your rocker arm resurfacing setup is perfect for the job. Well thought out and more than adequate for this application. A major improvement.

I grew up with a MC. Was a good little crawler for around the farm. Seemed to always have steering clutch issues if worked to hard. Great job on getting it running again. Always good to see old iron up and going

Great video. I ran two of them in the mid 80s. Made a living with them and a rock pit. Breat trail builders for the lake. A bucket and a blade. Slow and economical. Even baled the steep side hills for a neighbor. The weakness was if the pushed hard going up a bank. I'd guess 30 plus degrees you could limit the water to the sleeves, get a hot spot and when the tractor came back down. Crack a head. They were back breaker seats and ear ringers if I dint prepare well. Great little tractors. Probably 1000 plus hours on em. My back and ears say more. Even with protection . That is a very nice looking one. The 420 yellow? The number of idlers made a difference in ride. Very pure old tractor . A good muffler and a tip turn out highly recommended. Thank you for taking the time and the talent.

I see you are working on the head with the manifolds and exhaust pipe still on. I plan to do the same when I get back to my Farmall, it’s more difficult to handle but it will save dealing with gaskets and rusted tight nuts and studs.
@RustyRescues3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, trying to remove the manifold would open up another can of worms! Makes it more clumsy, but definitely easier in the long run to leave it on if possible.

Can someone please try the old school method... Apple cider vinegar in all the cylinders... keep them topped off for a week... It will pop loose and the rings will be free... Oil doesn't loosen the rings...

I bet you are very glad John Deere was so attached to 2 cylinder engines. A 4 cylinder would have been a bigger nightmare.

Won't anti-seize mess with the torque specs on the head bolts? Looks like you have a bit of blow-by going past the piston rings from the smoke I see coming up from the top of the head???

Threads in block should also be chased as they can be quite nasty with grey sludge. I usually wash them with solvent as I chase threads. Clicker torque wrench are, for most part highly inaccurate. The springs in them compress and lose accuracy quite fast even if your careful to unscrew them after use, always always double check with a dial torque wrench or needle as they seems to stay accurate even after decades of use. I also found that it's best to go around a final time just to check. Some times the middle ones end up being below spec.
@RustyRescues3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, "Highly inaccurate" is a bit of an exaggeration, but they are, of course, not the "most" accurate torque wrench available. That being said, for the jobs that they are typically used to perform, they are well within the tolerance range required; it's important to use the proper tool for the job. They should have their calibration checked intermittently, though, as they can drift. If a more accurate torque is required, a digital or beam type should be used, certainly. I typically make the extra loop as well; Eases my anxiety at the minimum! Cheers and thanks for watching!

mighty clean machine. How long ago since the rebuild amd paint job? dissapointing you didn't replace the rockers, honed the cylinders with the pistons in place ... sorry, but I was taught do the job right or don't do it at all. doing a half-assed job just means you're going to be into it again sooner, rather than later = more time and $$$ possibly a lot more $$$$ because something that should have been replaced wasn't, broke, and caused even more damage.
@RustyRescues3 жыл бұрын
The machine has never been rebuilt, and is very worn out. The museum it came from bought it as-is and threw paint at it to make it look pretty on display. Never let paint fool you. There is nothing wrong with reconditioning rocker arm tips if you have the ability to do so, it's no different than regrinding valves. The fact of the matter is that a machine in this poor of condition, without it running you have no idea how much it needs; is the clutch bad? How's the lower end? Is the trans good? Are the steer clutches good? Final drives? No idea. Do you dump a grand into the engine immediately, or do you do what's needed to make it run and then reassess the condition of the machine once it's under power, which is what we did. No damage is going to come from this, the engine was spun with no head until it built oil pressure, all fluids were changed and inspected for debris, anything that absolutely needed to be fully serviced was.
