Marshall Wang the events of the game all take place over the course of a day or two. Isshin is very sick, which is confirmed by speaking to Emma about him, and speaking to him under his Tengu disguise on your way to the Guardian Ape. He dies from sickness while you are off fighting the Divine Dragon, which means that he dies that night in the games time. You fight him in the evening, if you choose to join Owl

If you notice, Fire comes from things with Hate. The Demon of Hatred has fire attacks, here Isshin has fire attacks of his own since he now hates Sekiro, which is also why everything catches on fire around him. The Flame Barrel upgrade belonged to villager of Mibu, and the Mibu villagers are known to fear fire. It's interesting how in Soulsborne fire was related to Fear, but here it's related to Hate.

I think Fire is a better representation of Hatred than it is for Fear. Fire, like Anger, is a potent tool when used by someone with proper control. However, if they lose themselves to it, that Flame will destroy everything.

This is late reply but I feel like I should point out that Isshin isn't the one producing the flames. Those are actually Sekiro's flames, or to be more specific: Shura's flames. Isshin is using your own hate against you, literally fanning the flames of hatred towards you. Isshin Ashina is such a master of combat that his technique seems to be based on magic but he's just a man. He didn't produce the flames and in the Sword Saint version of him none of his attacks are magic based. Sure, his air swipes and blasts appear magical in nature but really he's just that good with a sword. He's not even using Genichiro's Way of Tomeo to cast lightning against us. If you look closely the way the Sword Saint summons lightning is different from how Genichiro summons lightning. So the Sword Saint is literally redirecting the lightning from the storm raging on to use against us. There's no magic, just pure skill.

This Isshin probably has my favourite Pre-Fight Cutscene in the entire game. The close-up of his face, the music, the slow reveal of his Damascus Blade, the sound of it being drawn. All of it is so beautifully intimidating.

@@jonathansenile4396 There is an old saying, "fear an old man in a profession where most die young." Isshin is an old hand at slaughter. So, his experience and high level of skill make up for any lacking reflexes. He's too old to have them anyway. He's just reading you and responding with the skills he's developed over the many decades. A lot of old men in media are easy to mistake as feeble, but underestimating experience and decades of practice is a bad thing to do. It's a little less plausible in hand-to-hand martial arts, as most old men can't take the strain of what that demands. Swordsmanship is more equal, as swinging a sword is a bit less demanding than punching or kicking. There are examples of older men dominating younger and fresher opponents by simply being more experienced, and knowing what to expect. It's kind of scary.

when you confront his battle memory it explains why. in the normal/secret path isshin dies naturally of old age. but due to genichiro's desire to keep Ashina afloat no matter the cost, genichiro sacrifices his life in exchange for reviving Isshin back in his prime. Wanting to honor his grandson's sacrifice, Isshin fights with you with every ounce of his strength regardless of how much he disagrees with genichiro's intentions.

Gammaberries I’ve interpreted it as honoring his grandchild. He clearly never stepped in to stop him taking Kuro, despite being the patriarch, and he also never actually informs you there’s a second Mortal Blade. You have to figure that out by listening in on him and finding the text hidden away in a box.

They share the same first phase. Sword saint second phase is slighlty harder. Third phase is two but easier due to lightning reversal, so I wouldn't say this fight is much easier than sword saint

Funny how the difficulty level of sword saint is just a little bit higher than this one. The first phase of this is actually harder because it has more moves, namely his grab attack and his back step fake out. The second phase is definitely easier than sword saint tho, even tho it's still really tough. If you're good at parrying then sword saint may be easier tho. I had trouble defeating both, but I swear this one's attacks felt more bullshit than sword saint. Dude literally set the stage on fire then proceeded to obliterate me with an attack that made me scream "Who is this Vergil wannabe?"

Fun fact: the description of Kusabimaru (the sword given by Kuro) says that even a shinobi must show mercy. I'm guessing that gameplay story segregation is why you didn't toss it aside for the final battle and use just the Mortal Blade.

Did they buff this fight? Ive been trying for hours and he sidesteps and counters me every single time i try to get first hit on him. I try to deflect and attack like in the vid but he always just deflects mine and destroys my posture. The tracking also seems different for me during his perilous attacks. I'm pretty much max attack and vitality and haven't had a single problem with any other thing in the game, i guess i still suck.
