Thank you so much for the video man, seriously. When we began working on this project, roughly 5 years ago, being featured on a channel like this sounded like an impossible dream. Over the span of all these years we had completely rewrote the game multiple times over, looking for something that we felt was special and captured the feeling of our inspirations (Doom 3, F.E.A.R.) while still being very much its own game. While a lot of fun, it wasn't easy. Leading up to the version that you got to play here and hearing the feedback from our testers, backers and from you have made me confident that all the effort was worth it. Massive props to everyone in the development team for making this possible and to our backers for giving us an actual budget every month. 💙

In the end, they're a list a compressed 256 color PNG's that are played in specific orders

@@SelacoGame Have you though about implementing the enemies as 3d models? There is this guy on KZbin that's turning Doom enemies into voxels and it shows that they can look both amazing and authentic.
@SelacoGame2 жыл бұрын
@@ghost085 Too impractical. Our enemies have thousands of animation frames per enemy type and voxels do not support animations. Meaning we would have to make different voxel models for each and every frame which will not only be a file size nightmare, it will tank the framerate because it has to constantly switch and render complex voxel models. This is only possible when the amount of animations are low, like Doom enemies.

One thing it's really interesting about Selaco is how the art of environmental design has evolved since the days of FEAR. FEAR's environments all looked the same bunch of boring corporate offices but in everything in Selaco is colorful and incredibly well designed, even more so when you take into account the limitations of the engine.
@AveSicarius2 жыл бұрын
With FEAR this was due to AI constraints, they made the environments extremely simple so as to make the AI decision making far easier (which is why FEAR AI still seems so good compared even to modern games). It was basically a choice between a detailed environment and having the FEAR AI as we know it, I prefer the latter honestly. It's why most of FEAR 1 + the expansions take place in fairly identical office and warehouse locations with very simple object placing. It's what allows the AI to do seemingly complex maneuvers, leap over objects, and gives some degree of Also the FEAR engine was already pushing graphical fidelity at the time, this is what people used to test their machines before Crysis came along, and for that kind of rendering you need to make sacrifices to ensure it will actually run on machines, usually in object (a faceless clone army) or environment (samey office blocks) detail, and so much of the rendering in FEAR is based around particle effects and dynamic lighting, both of which make it look way better than it has any right to do today (the dynamic lighting turns the super blocky and simple environments into something more). Basically you can afford to do this with GZDoom because the engine is much simpler, also I'd say the AI absolutely will not be as complex as FEAR just due to the engine they are working with. Not something to complain about, but one of the main reasons we still play FEAR today is the dynamic nature of those firefights. If they made FEAR without the AI and in such a low-tech engine, I'm sure the environmental design would be very different. Hell, both Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were out before this, two games with some of the best environmental design out there. I'm not saying it hasn't evolved, but that wasn't why FEAR was simplistic.
@cenciende94012 жыл бұрын
That's exactly one of the things which was so appealing about FEAR, it didn't take place in a combat zone or sci-fi mars base or something, gloriously tearing that office environment we all know to complete shreds was incredibly satisfying
@McGeezle2 жыл бұрын
@@cenciende9401 yeh I played F.E.A.R in 2016 and it never even occurred to me that the environments were bland or repetitive. I loved them. I don't like all kinds of visual clutter on screen anyway. I use old graphics when I play Halo 1 or 2

@@jasonvolkanov3123 it's not just Vanguard though cod been terrible apart from 2019 modern warfare which is decent. since after black ops 2. the rest have been awful or mediocre in multiplayer and or story or both. also they've been getting lazier with each one and .more aggressive with trying to bleed their customers dry of their 💵 imo while putting in the least amount of effort. this is from somone who's played them all and owns them all same issues with battlefield they have been getting lazier and more greedy also EA and dice. and also releasing terrible versions and broken also with each one being the worse than the last. it's got nothing to do with just hating Vanguard because it cool its genuinely earned the hate. and video game industry in general has been getting worse or lazier for the last 12 yr easily. look at all the terrible broken buggy and not fun kinda buggy and heavily monetized stuff we gotten over the last decade. in AAA games Mobile games and even indie games with the odd exception coming up from time to time

Because not all games need those features. You people speak with no idea on the matter.

Just be glad the spiders dont jump on the ceiling to get to you, tho i can imagine an upgraded version or Alt of those spiders that can do that (not suicide bomber but ranged?)

The old school reloads are beautiful. I honestly agree, a proper shotgun is what makes games like this.... That's why I hate halo infinite. There's no shotgun.

They should put in lean and as a compromise up the enemy AI to adopt flanking and flush out tactics. Also I took an unauthorised extended lunch break to watch your review. Worth every second. I'm sold.

I absolutely agree with you on the FEAR gameplay comparisions in regards to wanting to go back through in a different manner. I was having the same flashbacks and it felt awesome!

After being disappointed with Doom Eternal this looks right up my alley. Awesome video and much more thanks to the dev for putting all the love into this game. Also it really makes me wanna replay FEAR.

Idk how anybody would be disappointed with doom eternal, if you like doom 2016 you'll definitely like doom eternal since it improves many things, but also art is subjective
@Cptn_Fabulous2 жыл бұрын
@@williamsahalan.m.4520 It might aggravate them if they like story. I found that despite Doom Eternal having way more story than 2016, it was implemented far worse. It has way too many cutscenes that disrupt the pace, but which establish enough context that you can't just skip them. The arcadey gameplay also messes with the immersion by having too many abstract 'videogame-y' mechanics and aesthetic choices that aren't explained adequately in the context of the setting. It continuously reminds you that you're just a nerd playing a videogame, and not actually a demon slaying warrior.
@RamrodAI2 жыл бұрын
@@Cptn_Fabulous All the damn acrobatics was retarded too. And having to chainsaw zombies to get ammo. It forces you to be a try-hard and cuts out the old time players that perhaps can't play at a million miles per hour. Too much story that's incredibly hard to follow. It should have just been like good ol Doom. Space marine at Mars, UAC opens hell, you fight demons. Just a normal Space Marine. And not some ancient mysterious hellborne entity.
