Selattyn Tower itself, but at the end of the week, my wife and I went up and had a look. The tower itself is a Victorian viewing platform constructed in the centre of a Bronze Age Ring Cairn. The antiquarian spirit that inspired the commemoration respected the ancient lines of sight, and the window of the tower faces squarely towards that most impressive of local stone age monuments in the area: Old Oswestry Hill Fort. The top of Selattyn Hill used to be covered with trees - they’re felled now, but the hill has been replanted and the tree-cover is quickly returning. Be quick if you want to take in the fantastic view from the hill - in a few more years that view will be obscured by pines.
For anyone interested in the history of Selattyn Hill and the surrounding area, there’s a signboard on the route down from the summit of Selattyn Hill towards the village of Selattyn itself. It contains all sorts of tidbits of information, such as notes on the ring cairn and the tower itself, plus what the hill was used for at different times - including as a lookout post for the Home Guard. Dad’s Army: Selattyn, anyone?
