Selecting the Right Shoe for Your Home

Physical Therapist Tegan Nelson said wearing shoes in your home can not only help prevent injury… “But also, to help support the foot so that we reduce the risk of any back pain or knee pain, even hip pain.”
However not all shoes are created equal. “I think it's important to prioritize both comfort and stability. If we're going just for shoes based on comfort, you may not get the support that your body actually needs,” said Nelson.
Nelson said there are three things that she looks for in a good shoe. “We want the shoe to have a good base of support, we want it to have a good sort of rigid bottom, and then to allow enough space for the toes so that they're not squished or causing any pain…Having a supportive shoe can improve your balance a little bit to then help reduce risk of fall or other injury.”
There are things you should avoid. “We want to avoid anything that's too flexible, that's not providing any stability to the foot,” said Nelson. Everyone’s foot has a unique shape and mechanics. Physical therapists can help assess your arch and recommend a shoe that would be best for you. They can also help if you’re dealing with pain.
