Such a great reaction, guys. Tejano music was a male dominated genre until Selena broke down those barriers. Selena was Mexican-American. Even though she sang in Spanish, she couldn't speak it very well. She was murdered by the president of her fan page... Yolonda. She is still missed, very much.

To be exact, Yolanda was more than president of her fan club. she was manager of her clothing boutiques. She was embezzling money from the stores. When Selena went to talk to her about it at a hotel in Corpus Christie, Yolanda panicked and shot her hitting her in the shoulder and severing a major artery from which she died a few hours later..

Selena was a third generation Mexican American. She started singing only in English but her dad advice that it would be better to connect to her roots. She eventually found a lot of success on the Spanish music world but she always wanted to go back into singing English. She was in the process of recording an English album when she got shot. She only got to record four songs for her English album.

This is what we call a cumbia. She was married to Chris who played guitar in her band. Her brother AB wrote most of her songs. He played guitar in the band, he is the one with glasses. Jennifer Lopez actually stayed with her family for a couple of weeks before she did the movie so she could learn about Selena, her sister would say that she reminded her so much of Selena she didn’t know if she was just acting (trying to get into character) or if her character was just like her sister’s. I was 2 blocks away from the hotel where she was shot the day it happened.😢 she was an amazing person.

Selena’s older brother wrote this and MANY of her other songs,her husband Chris played guitar,today would’ve been their 31st wedding anniversary,he had to mourn her on what would’ve been their 3rd anniversary in 1995,he formed a band with friends later on and he co wrote a song in her memory called “Best I Can”,should check that out.

Okay first of all, shes been speaking and singing in Spanish way before the age of 19. Baila Esta Cumbia 1987, i believe and several others were produced by AB QUINTINANILLA III her brother.. SELENA was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. She taught her self Spanish by watching Mexican soap operas. Her museum is in Corpus, and ran by her Sister Suzette. I'm a HUGE selena fan an have her merch. Sadly, the Houston Astrodome concert was her last TELEVISED concert, this month marked her breaking attendance anniversary records at the Astrodome!!! She actually out sold MICHAEL JACKSON...her music is derived, from a mix of Tex-Mex, Queen of Tejano, some Zydeco and r and b music, enjoy!!! She was 23 in March when she was murdered...FYI, SELENA wrote Bidi bidi bom bomb, it was her only sing that she wrote, with the help of Pete Astudio...

Her name is pronounced Selina, that's the way she pronounced it because she was Mexican-American. Tejano, is Spanish for Texan. So Tejano music is music by Mexican-Amercan Texans. I live in Houston, Tx but born and raised in Laredo, Tx, I am third generation Mexican-Amercan, so I have listened to this music my whole life. There were some female artist in the genere but never at the very top only men. She was 23, at this concert. Her birthday is April 16, which is now known in Texas as Selena day, by then governor George W Bush. Tejano music, even though is in Spanish it is considered Amercan music because it is music born in Texas and made by Texans, who speak Spanish. It is a mix of, Mexican, and German music. As the genre grew and more amercan generes grew as well Tejano has polkas, cumbias boleros. Now these type of music you can even here rock, pop, mariachi, and R&B mixed into it as well. Selena first learned her Spanish songs phonetically, by 19 or 20 years of age she began teaching herself Spanish, to be able to speak to her Spanish speaking audience. She was a very smart young woman.

She started in Tex Mex style but she soon moved to other Mexican regional Styles and then more Latino. That means that the bigger she got the brisket her audience so if course she had to explore more styles into her music. She grew up as an American kid and didn't even speak Spanish but her father made her learn songs phonetically. She would struggle a lot in Spanish interviews.

That performance was the largest in the Houston Astrodome's history. The record she broke was from the year before and it was also her record. At the time of her death 3 weeks later, she was 23 and was well on her way to being as big as a Madonna, or a Whitney or a Mariah. You should listen to her english cross over songs, but they just aren't as emotional.

Another Mexican American artist you may have heard is Richie Valens! He’s famous for La Bamba but also some more English songs from the 50’s like We Belong Together and Oh Donna. His actual last name is Valenzuela but he changed it because well, what white people would listen to him in the 50’s😅 Don McLean wrote the song “American Pie” and it references Ritchie’s death in a plane crash along with other singers, as “The Day The Music Died”

i was so relieved when i read legal professionals saying that, she will most likely be denied for parole because she never admitted what she did, and to have parole you have to actually feel remorse and accept your crimes, and that b** still denies everything.

There was this very popular show in Mexico and it played in the states on the Spanish channel, it called Johnny Canales Show I think. He showcased bands on this show, well Selena used to perform there when she was a child, he interviewed her and she did not speak Spanish. They said she basically learned Spanish phonetically. Also I was there for this performance, upper deck at the astrodome a 10ish year old kid only there because my mom was huge on Selena.

Selena was shot by a lady named Yolanda saldivar/ someone who worked for Selena, but it started when Yolanda started working for Selena, Yolanda was obsessed with her but a while after she started working for Selena she stole some money from Selena’s boutique and from selena. So they found out so Selena to Yolanda to give her all the money back so they both went to the same place corpus crispis Texas so they met, selena went with her husband but turns out Yolanda didn’t give her back all the money,so they met again this time Selena went alone and that same place boom she got shot so she ran for her life to the lobby and she told the people o lock the door because she was scared Yolanda was going to shoot her again. But then... she said her last words last wich was “Yolanda saldivar”
