No, Selena’s Versión is a remake of Taste of Honey - Sukiyaki. Now, Taste of Honey sampled the original sound of Kyu - Sukiyaki but changed the words and the beat. And Kyu Sukiyaki song was influenced by black American rock n roll anyway.

The song made it to the States during or shortly after WWll, my mother had a record of it, so I grew up listening to the Japanese version. Some yrs later I joined the Air Force & was sent to Japan TDY in the early '60's about the time Kyu Sakamoto made his version. I always enjoyed the several versions, probably because of the connection with my Mother. I am not Spanish but I discovered Salena on Mexican TV stations before she was discovered in the States - I was following/watching singer-dancer Edie Chacon from my home in Chicago and tripped over Salena on one of the Mexican stations - she was a very engaging and exciting talent who like Kyu left us far to early. I still enjoy the song, her version & all the others too.

Sukiyaki Japanese title is "Ue o muite aruko", roughly translated is "I Walk Looking Up (so the tears won't fall), performed by Kyu Sakamoto, written by Hachidai Nakamura and Rokusuke Ei . However, the English version was written by Janice Marie Johnson lead singer and bass player of the band A Taste Of Honey. Sadly, she had to give up all writing credit to the original writers in order to get the song published and recorded. This version is translated into Spanish from Ms Johnson's English

Selena was only 17 or 18 when she made this video, and to me she looked very much like she did just before she died! Her hair and makeup was similar to when she was older, but on all the other video's that Ive seen when she was this young, she didn't look at all like she did just before she died! I'm watching the Netflix series, Selena. They have done an excellent job with the story line and casting. The replication of this scrne was excellent. Her murderer, Yolanda Salvivar is in Mountain Veiw Prison in Gatesville, TX. I hope she gets lots of mail after people have watched this series. Selena was robbed of her life at age 23 and of a long career she could have had. How could anyone, especially a trusted "friend" do this to her! The whole world was robbed of this beautiful person with an angelic voice.
