I have a question can I plug in a ethernet to telephone adapter into my mouth five 4500 Sims seven and have telephone service
@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 3 жыл бұрын
@@keithbaldwin5067 With the MoFi or the Insty Connect it does not handle phone service. However, if you connect to the WiFi hotspot you can use WiFi Calling on your phone to establish a phone connection through it. That takes advantage of the antenna boost. too. I often do that with my T-Mobile phone when it does not have service and connect through the MoFi that has an AT&T SIM in it to place calls.

Did the MOFI give you any trouble or is it just because the insty is better. I am trying to get my eldererly parents a internet connection.. They don't need heavy bandwidth and I would do the insty but it's up front cost is much higher and I am trying to save them money
@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 3 жыл бұрын
@@leweezo33 My MoFi works fine but some of the complaints about the MoFI is that they have taken too long to come up with updates, it uses much older technology, and the menu is complicated for many people to use. The Insty Connect has address those issues and integrates the antenna into the design. It is a better solution in my opinion. MoFi is releasing a new 5500 model in a few weeks and I will do a review of that one soon.

I just got mine today. I got the sub-6 version because I'm rural, and use a Tmoble MVNO. So far I'm pretty disappointed. I thin they can fix it with a firmware upgrade, but as it stands, you can't alter the APN granular settings.

Glad to see the update. Weve been using the Mofi Sim 7 on Tmobile data plan since summer when we first saw your video. It works pretty well, better than Roku, lol. Is your Tmobile SIM running another phone line or is it specifically a hotspot plan you signed up for? I went a few weeks to get one to try this out and they told me I had to buy a hotspot data plan, that a traditional phone line with data would not work in the Mofi. Hoping they were wrong, because I've hit my 100GB data cap for the hotspot and have been throttled to 2G (0.1mbps) speed. If I can run a SIM that is connected to a regular phone line with data then hopefully I can get around that 100GB cap!

@@aaronbrooks1048 I added a data line/tablet only to our phone plan. This plan gets you a SIM card same as your phone, it'll fit Mofi. Just don't break the size of SIM card till your ready, that way you wont nees adapter. Data only for us to add is $20 vs $30 for phone line, but could be more now. You'll get a phone number assigned to this data line, it's what Tmo says they do, no idea if it works. Many store employees are not too knowlegeable about this data only plan, but when I found one it sure made it easy. When you set it up in Mofi per Sele Training videos it'll operate as a data line, not a hotspot. We use alot of data this way and works pretty good. Hope this helps.

My apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere. I just purchased a mofi 4500 sim 4 version from Ebay. It's in great shape and works well. I did attempt to put my USmobile telephone sim into the mofi and it didnt recognize it at all. As in no internet. I am strongly thinking of purchasing an AT&T grandfathered plan on Ebay. The seller gets excellent ratings. However I am wondering if AT&T will not allow this to work. Now or in the soon to be future. Thanks for your excellent videos. Very clear and informative!

@@affordabledesertliving3487 It's a risk getting a SIM off ebay. I personally purchased an iPad Unlimited Data plan from the AT&T store. It's only $20/mo and works great in the MoFi or Insty Connect. Not much difference. The essentials will deprioritize you in congested areas but that happens with either plan when you are over the 50GB data use in a month anyway. It's rare to see a change with deprioritization. Only happened to me once in the last 18 months. Magenta includes taxes and fees in the price but Essentials doesn't so the price difference is not much.

I have a SIM4 version, I also have a WeBoost system installed. I placed my WeBoost internal antenna on top of my MoFi 4500 between the two MoFi paddle antennas. My WeBoost has a omnidirectional antenna mounted on the roof of my motorhome. You mentioned connecting the WeBoost to the primary cell antenna port on the MoFi. To be clear, do you mean to take the cable coming out of the WeBoost amplifier and disconnect it from the WeBoost internal antenna and then connect the WeBoost amp output directly to the MoFi primary cell antenna input port? Or do you mean to disconnect the WeBoost external antenna from the WeBoost amp and connect the WeBoost external antenna directly to the MoFi input port (completely bypassing the WeBoost amp altogether). Thanks for clarifying!
@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 4 жыл бұрын
My suggestion is to connect the Weboost antenna direclty to the MoFi in place of the Primary 3G/4G LTE antenna. You'll have to use the right connectors. The MoFi will use that antenna for boosting the signal and no more need for the Weboost amplifier. It would be interesting to compare the two methods to see which one works best.

I live in the mountains, I am about 500 ft from receiveing 3-4 bars. Once I turn into my driveway we lose signal completely. I ordered mofi 4500 sim7 and now deciding between proxicast or yagi mimo antenna. Will these help with getting signal to our house or should I also invest into a booster? I guess I'll try first with the yagi antenna to see if I get any signal? Thank you so much for your help!
@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 4 жыл бұрын
With a fixed location you can point the Yagi toward the tower to improve the signal. You do have to play with the direction to get it set for the best speed. The Proxicast is omnidirectional so no need to point it. I’d lean toward the Yagi for your use. To get true MIMO though you need two Yagi antennas and the SIM4 model of the MoFi. The SIM7 model does not provide carrier aggregation so it really doesn’t help.

@@BeauJohnson1 The antenna will do all the boost you can get for the MoFi. No need for other options. If that isn't enough then it may just be the limitation of the tower bandwidth.

Yes, unfortunately if it is a hotspot data only plan it won’t go past the hotspot data limit even if you use the TTL 65 setting. You can run an app like opensignal to find the direction for the local tower. With two Yagi antennas it is best to tilt them 90 degrees from each other and point them in the direction of the tower. You can scan the signal on the MoFi to zero in on the best direction to maximize throughput.

Carrier aggregation allows you to combine the signal from two antennas to get better speed. If your speed is good then it’s better to go with the SIM7 for the extra bands. You can connect the two yagi antennas directly to the MoFi in place of the Primary and Secondary ultra wide band antennas that came with the MoFi. It's best to tilt the two yago antennas at 90 degrees from each other. If you have a SIM4 model you can do carrier aggregation to combine the signals from each antenna. No need for any other booster. If you have a good signal to the tower then it is probably just the bandwidth of the tower itself that is the limitation. Also, try connecting directly to the ethernet port on the MoFi and test the speed. Some people have seen improvements hard wired as opposed to using wifi on the MoFi.

@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 4 жыл бұрын
A couple things you want to do to make sure it's setup correctly. Update the router firmware to the latest version. There have been bugs in older firmware. You can do that with the remote update from the System menu. Also make sure you have solid connections to the MoFi in place of the Ultra Wide Band antennas. If you only have one antenna then put it on the primary side. The cable you use needs to be 50 Ohm coax. That's not the same as 75 Ohm TV cable. Finally, make sure the cable is not too long. You will lose signal if you use a long cable. Try to keep it under 25 ft. The Yagi is a directional antenna so you'll need to point it directly to the tower. You can find that with some apps on your cell phone or just turn it and watch the status of the signal until you see the best reception.

You can take a SIM card from your existing T-Mobile service or add another line if you want to dedicate the SIM for the MoFi. The MoFi does not come with it's own SIM. Once the MoFi has your SIM installed and setup you can create a wifi hotspot to use for all of your devices and you won't get throttled when you set the TTL to 65 even when you surpass the data limit of 50GB for T-Mobile. To improve your cell signal you can add a Proxicast omnidirectional antenna to boost the connection with the tower.

Do you know the priority level of the AT&T iPad Unlimited data plan? Using Visible I'm getting 15-30 mbps at times, but often speed tests show about 2mbps even with good signal strength. I think it's throttling due to congestion and I'm wondering if the iPad plan has a higher priority like typical postpaid plans? And btw, what makes the iPad plan qualify as postpaid since it's a fixed monthly charge? I really appreciate the clarity of your instructions, and especially your willingness to continue to answer so many questions. Thanks.
@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with many third party carrier plans like Visible is that they place your data usage below others. That means when the tower is busy you get deprioritized often. Some plans even limit you to 5Mbps speed. That is one reason I stick with the main carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T. The postpaid plans are standard where you commit to a one or two year plan. With the prepaid plans many carriers block the SIM if it is used in any other device like the MoFi. That’s not an issue with the postpaid plans.

I don't recommend prepaid plans because those often get suspended when the SIM is used in a device like the MoFi. You'll need a regular postpaid cell plan. It's cheapest to add a line to your existing cell carrier but If you need new service the best option is to call around to the AT&T stores and ask for an iPad unlimited data plan. Thank you so much for all the info you share. Maybe you can help me. I am 55 and would like to try T mobile. All the plans say it has hot spot data? Can you tell me what is the best plan? I am using AT&T right now. Renting the card from an eBay person for 80.00 a month. I am about one mile from the tower but my signal quality runs about -14 to -18 witch is why I want to try T mobile. Also I average 20mbps down and 40 up. is there any way to adjust that. I only use the down. Thanks again you have been a big help already. Donald.
@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 4 жыл бұрын
I believe you can get a 55+ age T-Mobile plan at a discount. I'd test that on the phone first before you use it in the MoFi to get an idea of the speed. T-Mobile provides 50GB per month with the standard plan but the MoFi with the TTL setting will allow you to go over that without throttling. You can also get an iPad unlimited data plan from AT&T as a new subscriber for $20/mo if you call around and ask for it. No need for an $80/mo plan. The speed up or down is based on the connectivity and the tower. Not much you can do about that other than improve the connection with an antenna. 20Mbps is great speed for most any use though.

Just sent this email to Mofi. Haven’t found an answer in the documentation yet I am attempting to switch from centurylink to MY1WIFI and have installed your 4500 router with their SIM card. In house network consists to router, a cat5 switch because there are not enough jacks in the routers, and a netgear router set to WAP only in the other end of the house. On centurylink dsl Speedtest shows 6-7mps and all my Roku TV’s (some wireless, some on cat5) and other devices see virtually that same speed. On the mofi 4500 the Speedtest shows about 58mps but the devices like the TV’s are all showing 1mps. Tv pictures are blurry. KZbintv won’t load. I have temporarily switched back to centurylink but I need to figure out why the 4500 isn’t delivering the 60mps speed to the devices for both cat5 and WiFi. Help.

One of the main things I discovered with Roku TV's is that they really only work on a 2.4Ghz speed setting. If you are connected on a 5Ghz try switching it to the slower connection.

Not familiar with that one but it looks like a clone of the MoFi. It probably does not have the TTL setting in the menu but you may be able to add that in the configs manually. I love this Mofi option as a suggestion to family and friends who do not have my plan. My one issue with the Nighthawk is the WiFi signal around the hotspot is very limited. If I am much outside of my Fifth Wheel, I start to lose signal. What would be your recommendation to add a mobile router to my Nighthawk?

Yes, you can add a router that provides a better signal. The alternative is to add a wifi antenna that will enhance the signal. Great videos. I liked the live Q&A recording too. I just bought and configured the MOFI4500-4GXeLTE V3 SIM 7. One of the things that I've found in the configuration is that ISP TTL (Time to Live) is now defaulting to Linux 64 (the recommend TTL you recommend is now Linux-2 65). Mofi's new recommendation is to use Linux TTL 64 (which seems faster). A quick questions, does TTL 64 still look like phone data vs. hotspot data, which might get throttled or should we still be using TTL 65 setting?
@SeleTraining
@SeleTraining 3 жыл бұрын
MoFi does say that the TTL 64 is faster and that is why they defaulted the setting that way but you do need to change it to 65 if you don't want throttling after you go past your data limit. Each time you do a firmware update you'll need to change that setting back.

@@SeleTraining Thanks for that update on the TTL 65 setting. You're the only one responsive on things like this and to me, there's FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) providing guidance about the TTL64 setting. Your direct 1 sentence response is outstanding and cuts to the chase (as they say). Gracias! Thanks for the update on the Insty Connect device, which doesn't appear available just yet for. I know that you talk a lot about RV Internet, but as big a community having issues is the boating community, which is what my application is for and I'm a bit of a evangelist for a large boating group trying to figure out how to get Internet for boaters since it seems that most marinas have even worse Internet issues than RV Parks. Wish the Mofi could be both a cellular Internet device and a Marina Wifi Repeater/Extender, but no dice there and you don't speak of it in your Insty Connect Video. I have a concern about the Insty Connect for boaters. I can add a Proxicast 7 dBI Pro-Gain Bullet (smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B082D35ML1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) that has a 1x14 inch antenna and marine mount for a Radar arch application. Boats need to be able to move without putting antennas up and down. The Insty Connect antenna just doesn't look conducive for boaters. It would be interesting to have a an antenna solution for boaters, otherwise, it just doesn't look fit for purpose. Your thoughts on where Insty might have a boating solution...?

He said they had problems loosing connections so now default is 64. He said AT&T may drop me if they find out not using phone (understand). I am concerned about 64 vs 65 because I am not at location where this router will be placed (170 miles). Long drive for reboot. Main reason to switch from NETGEAR M1 because it looses cell connection a lot. I am on a unlimited plan with 4 other phones with 50gb of data before it might slow down anyway. Any thoughts?

@@d21mike I use AT&T with the TTL set to 65. As long as you have a postpaid plan it works fine.
