Using self-advocacy skills at work lets you help frame how others peserceive you by adding our own perspective to the picture. Read my Getting Ahead book www.amazon.com... There are two key elements of working to build self-advocacy skills at work:
• Building relationships with people who can advocate for you. These are people with influence in your organization who will help promote you to others.
• Voicing your own successes, skills, and strengths to others.
Do you have an advocate in your organization? If you’re like most of the audience members in this video, you have two. However, Joel recommends having three or four, meaning you need to hone relationships with another leader or two in a position of influence. That way if one or two of them leave, you’re not left high and dry.
Advocating for ourselves tends to feel a lot harder than advocating for others, but self-advocacy skills at work are vital. At work, making your competence, impact, and value visible to others will open new doors. If people don’t know what you do, how you do it, and how you benefit the company, that will hurt your career success. That will also hurt the company’s bottom line, because it can’t make full use of your potential-or because you might not stick around if you’re not fully valued.
Commit to your success today by taking these three key steps:
• Imagine what you’d say about yourself if you didn’t have to filter it for fear of being seen as bragging. You can probably go on for quite a while about what you give to the company.
• Find three or four strong advocates at work, and keep them apprised of you accomplishments and strengths.
• Highlight your skills and contributions with others to share a fuller picture of who you are and the impact you have on your organization.
Our behavior is always being observed by others. Adding your own voice and perspective to the conversation is only wise. Otherwise, people might have a very limited perspective of you. Remember, leaders will appreciate hearing about your success because it’s their success too! This is how you apply self-advocacy skills at work.
