"When things get emotional, all philosophy and reason and morality flies out of the window", I started laughing so much at that part because it is so damn true. Mind performs its biggest magic tricks and sleights of hand through emotions. Behind almost all of your decisions are emotions, not reason, even if it doesn't seem so...

Machina yes concepts are how humans get things done to a large extent. But that doesn't mean those concepts illustrate how reality truly is. They can be a very useful lie

Leo's points in a list: * Thinking that you basically got reality figured out * Believing that reality is objective and mind plays little role in it * Assuming self-deception is not significant * Thinking that you can avoid metaphysics * Conceptualization. Confusing the map for the territory * Language and labeling * Belief and hearsay * The unwillingness to admit "I don't know" * Childhood imprinting indoctrination * The need for contrast in order for human mind to grasp something * Assumptions * Self-evidence (Apriority) * Emotions * Not being conscious of your own ego reactions* Projection* Distraction and red herrings* Believing that science has figured it all out (or will) * Pet theory * Confirmation bias, cherry-picking evidence and narrative making * Underestimating paradigms (paradigm blindness) * Taking basic things for granted * Question-begging * Judgement, criticism and name-calling * Close-mindedness * New-age bias * Dismissing the occult and mystical and paranormal phenomena * Blaming, scapegoating and demonizing * Arguing and debating * False skepticism and debunking * Human species bias * Dismissing all of these points as mere philosophy * We can't know anything, everybody's wrong, let's go watch TV * All of your cultural preferences Oh and they are all huge :)

Great Video, Leo - that an really interesting overview over many of these self-deception mechanisms. It seems these mechanisms are infinite in number. I'd like to add a few which i also find important to notice here (maybe some of them will be covered by you next week): • repetition - believing something just because you've heard it many times • peer pressure - believing something to fit into a group • Ideology - categorizing yourself as something (something you like to be seen as) and acting in accord to this categorization instead of in accord to what you really want (and why you categorized yourself like this in the first place) • believing something because everybody beliefs it (doubting you own direct experiences and conclusions and instead believing the conclusions of the mass) • wanting to know - wanting to escape not knowing • dismissing new information on a topic because you think you already know the topic and have mastered it (especially if this information comes from someone who is seemingly from outside of this field an “hasn’t spent enough time with this topic to contribute something of significance”) • believing what the mind tells you • believing that rationality is the only way / the best way to make sense of reality • confusing conceptual understanding with embodied understanding --> not taking a thing really seriously (maybe thinking about it a bit but not realizing what is really being said, what would be implied, how this new information may change everything) --> Believing to be skeptical or aware of self-deception just because you heard about the mechanisms (or because you can formulate thoughts about it like formulating the mechanisms) • Confusing a narrative with the real action (being more concerned with how to call or categorize what you're doing or how it will be called or categorized by others, that just doing it) • dualism • identification - creating the distinction me vs. other - identifying with some sensations in your awareness but not with others • deferment - of meaning, of answering a question (infinite regress), of action (“I’ll do this later / I’ll explore or question”)

Although I have a long way to go I will keep meditating, reading books and self-inquiring. Enjoyed your last episode, I now think twice after I'm self-deceived. Thank you!

Holy shit Leo. These latest two videos have done more for me than 100s of hours I've vested into other means of pursuing enlightenment in the past. Like, these fundamental core deceptions I had contemplated and known intuitively, but they didn't stick as hard as they should have. The implications are fucking astounding. I both hate and love how tricky the human mind is, it's genius and a masterpiece of sorts. I feel as if your speaking directly to me, I didn't even have to pay for this coaching. My questions that I would've had raised had I sat one on one with you, that have been floating around for awhile now, answered immediately. I'm excited for your book. Keep it up, and here I had assumed and "Thought" (2nd quote at the beginning of this video) I was out of the woods with the running in circles after a few big past insights. What a joke! I'm just giddy right now over it hahaa

+Zach Wenzel Good, you're starting to get it. But still just the tip of the tip of the iceburg. The deceptions are even more devilish than I revealed in these two episodes. The deepest deceptions are hardly speakable. They require 1000s of hours of personal investigation to unmask. But it's worth it. So keep plugging away. Amazing things will come. One day you will discover why all this deception was necessary. It's a thing of infinite beauty.

Can you please be specific as to which of the self-deceptions you are skeptical of? Most of the ones he had listed I catch myself being deceived by in the moment nearly every day, only when I am highly aware of my thoughts and actions am I able to recognize I've been swept away by my mind and lost at sea until I find the shore again. Other times I might go a day or even more on autopilot, a record of habits on repeat and that seems to be no way to live for me personally. A prison of the mind, I'd rather use my mind as a tool to pull out when needed, not live at the mercy of my senseless habits.

Machina I know what you mean with the scepticism. But he is in a dilemma, he wants to communicate something but that is facillitated only through concepts. But he still wants to communicate something. If he would practice scepticism here there would be no room left for the massage, because he would have to say "or not" after every sentence. And yes of course he has an agenda and of course these concepts are just another story. He inhabits the perspective of no perspecitves, which of course is perspective and has to be one in order to be communicated. And yes sometimes I think a little more compassionate tone would be appropriate. And yes you are right why trust him? Why believe him? Believing is a bad idea. Go find out for yourself, but be sure not to decieve yourself ;) And tadaa suddendly his video has value. Decieve mechanism nr. 61 believing leo. - Im sure he will say that in the next episode :D I personaly treat his vidoes and concepts as tools. And so far I sail quite good with that.
@gimlisrage5
@gimlisrage5 7 жыл бұрын
Machina I don't want to persuade you (Well to be honest of course I want, Im human and I don't want to open me up to new perspectives so I "defend" my position and my story because it gives me a sense of me - (which is a decieving mechanism)) You say belief in concepts is not bad, yes ok but then neither are those of religion. The concepts of religion also worked, just the goal was different. I don't think science is an evil thing. I am pretty glad that there are anesthetics and so on. But I guess thats not the point of the disscusion. The point of the disscusion is whats true. Most of the great scientist like Einstein contemplated deeply about metaphysical questions. But the mainstream science is locked into the materialist paradime. But really I don't know whats true. Maybe science, maybe not. So far I sail pretty well with the perspective of no perspective which deconstructs itself along the way. But that may change. Cheers and good night. (Yes I know that I just assumed the concept of night. Man inhabiting the perspective of no perspective is tiring) :D

So why do it? Although I dont personally believe no human AT ALL -- yes, not even The Great Leo himself -- has absolutely zero belief or perspective -- quite evidently, Leo is teeming with beliefs and "perspectives", if you can put in perspective like that. He is sure, beyond shadow of a doubt, non-duality, monism, biocentricism, and what not that revolves around pretty much deconstructing every aspect that makes us HUMAN is where the party is at... and he doesn't seem even the least inclined to take a critical look onto his own perspective of these things, but instead makes a rookie mistake that of any serious teacher by firmly positioning himself onto the belief that his ultimate worldview is THE right one. No way would you make his mind reconsider one of his main beliefs that, for example, god/source/The One isn't actually The One or "A One", and that maybe there exists an external god -- or rather, there is something called an external reality outside that is separated from us. He. will. not. budge. on these main perspectives no matter the counter-arguments. Try it for yourself.

Hi Leo, I have been a subscriber and watcher of your content for about 2-3 years. I rarely if ever comment, but I enjoy your videos on a weekly basis and found that the topics discussed in each episode has greatly improved my well-being and understanding of psychology. Regarding this episode, I have a personal question revolving around self-deception. Recently, I have experimented with mushrooms and during the experience I found myself at a loss for words at trying to describe the nature of reality. I became aware that anytime I tried to conceptualize reality, I had already lost touch with the true nature of it. It left me concluding that I don't know and for once, I was okay with the uncertainty and not knowing, as well as seeing that to get really get a glimpse of the true nature of reality I needed to be quiet, drop the ego, and stay aware. I feel that this was a breakthrough of some sort because I really saw my ego and self-proclaimed delusions to be what they really were, manifestations of the mind and not actual Truth; however, there was backlash over the following days of a particular self-deception you mentioned in this video. I thought perhaps that nobody knows or that it is impossible to know, we're just stuck in this chaotic mess of experiences. This led me to feeling that ego life, desires, needs, being meaningless, with no context to ground it in besides an idea/glimpses of consciousness. Consequently, I let myself slip back into ego-mode a bit to feel better and to not allow the experience effect my personal life, but this also allows increase of self-deception when it comes to understanding nature of reality. My question is: how do we balance conceptualizing reality or analyzing/understanding our experiences while trying to shut out these mechanisms of the mind (given they tend to lead to more delusion). It feels like every time I try to grasp it, I have already lost, which makes me dubious about ever really getting it beyond the glimpses which is why I am dubious of others having gotten it. Almost as if Truth with a capital T will never be caught because for anything to be "caught" it happens within the ego mind/illusion? you feel me? It feels like I'm too deep into the illusion and see through it, so whatever I see is in the context of the illusion. Am I on the right track? Are there any tips, re-assurances, or videos of your own you can point to that maybe I should re-watch? P.S. 100% respect for you and your work. I am looking forward to Part 3 and upcoming videos.
@ActualizedOrg

+Kevin Antunes That's right, you got a glimpse of the Truth and you got a glimpse of how powerful the illusion of life is. Life sucks you back in. There is a big difference between getting temporary glances and full-on ego death. You haven't realized yet that Truth means surrendering your very life. You must die. And that is the last thing your mind wants. So you fall back into the comfortable illusion. But with enough work and a serious pursuit of Truth, eventually you will reach a point where it kills you for good. The mind is nuked into silence and all of reality collaspes into divine Nothingness. At this point you are dead, but your body continues to function perfectly. You have awoken from the illusion of life. You have become immortal. You are conscious that the entire universe is a construction of Infinite Mind. Your perception of mundane reality become permeated by divinity. Every speck of dust becomes alive, conscious, intelligent, self-radiant. The Truth has become your very identity. All fear is vanquished. But to get that isn't so easy. You have to give your life up for it.

I happened to watch one of your videos about two months or so ago. I've been really interested in concepts like infinity and always thinking about different metaphysical concepts. My friend linked me to the "Understanding Absolute Infinity - Part 1" video and honestly I didn't expect the whole world to melt around me, the more I thought about it and looked inward thinking about it the more everything melted, now here I am, nearly to my 30 days straight of meditation and improving at a really quick pace, everything has turned around and I can tell I've allready become quite mindful and reflective. I can't wait to see how deep I can go and how much I can improve myself with all of this. last week you mentioned that the video wasnt "practical" but I think self improvement and realizing these things about yourself and evyerhting/nothing is super practical and important =3 Thanks, Leo! Keep up the good work.

If you continue on trying to get the most accurate picture of unconsciousness and its different layers, always trying to understand it even a bit more and more, you won't get very far... This is just one side of the coin. You haven't transformed it to being an effortless state yet, without there being a doer that actually does all these kinds of things. This is what many people call enlightenment. I agree that this is not the end of the journey, but it's definitely the start of a whole new life, and I feel like you are resisting "going all the way all the time", asking yourself "who is aware?" repeatedly, again and again, until it's become just "what you do" and "how you live life". This is exactly the trap I fell into so many times, and I continue to do so. Right now I'm closer to the actual thing than ever before, while actually caring less about it than ever before, so I speak from experience when I say "God damn, I'm so glad I threw it all away once again, (throwing everything I knew until this point into the fire), and going on from here as a fresh start, with nothing to do in life than ask "Who is it that is aware right now?" Then the thinker completely disappears and life just happens, without you actually being attached to the illusion. From here you can really do anything you always wanted in life. I REALLY recommend you do this so many times until it sticks. It's just the best gift you can ever do to yourself. Also, at your "point of growth" you could change so many things in the world. You would be shocked how much you still self sabotage, let me tell you that...

I fell asleep watching a previous video and woke up to this one. Crazy thing is that I was having a dream, in my dream my old roommate from college was talking to me about which culture do I prefer, I said "atheist" which I thought was weird because im not an atheist anymore. Turns out I was answering how Leo was pretending you'd answer, and he said word for word everything Leo said from about 1.20 and on. When I woke up I turned my computer off and went back to sleep. In the morning I was curious if my roommate in my dream was saying what Leo was saying and sure enough, about 10min back in the video from where I turned it off my roommate in my dream was saying everything word for word.

I hope you're gonna present us your ideas on paranormal phenomena and mysticism. There are some people that watch you and that are interested and open, even though you might not see it most of the time. I would say thank you for the insights, but the value of these words can't be compared to my level of gratefulness, Leo.

Well, I've already talked a lot about mysticism. We'll cover more of it in the future, after laying some epistemic framework and opening people's minds some more. This material builds on it self. It's a very deep rabbit hole, and people need to be guided into it gradually, or they freak out and run away. The rationalist, materialist mind is very skittish and easily self-deceived with false skepticism and mistrust of anything that's not mainstream culture.

I'll have to agree with Machina mate. At least he evidently appear to know a fair bit amount more than you do. Hey! I didn't start pointing fingers and assuming stuff about others, you did mate. And shouldn't a devout like you to Leo's teaching be following and start applying what's being told in Leo's vids mate? Or are you just wasting ocean of hours, that you could use by doing something else more productive, than going through his self-indulging talk just for his soft soothing voice?

Kyle Callahan they admit that indeed what they claim to know is infact only what appears to have the greatest probability. Indeed any proper scientist never profess to know any truth with absolute 100% certainty, which I dont believe my previous post stated otherwise. And the “I have everything to gaim and nothing” statement? ... well, good on you buddy if such is the case for you, but I will have to strongly disagree with you on that front. You asserting that people should question everything, prompting them for exhaustive and continous investigation on any given topic can only spell disaster for the individual’s mental health and quality of life. We are humans, build as an intricate organic, very fine-tuned system, and in order to move on and continue to evolve as a species and individually we have to assume, after repeated confirmation, that we feel lile we know something with certainty (artificially or not). We wouldn’t be going anywhere but remain pinned down into a pit of despair, compulsive doubting, and extremey anxiety if we were to question/never make a decision that something is “fact”... besides, considering science’s track-record and what it has done to mankind, (again as a whole), and in contrast measure it up against spirituality... I dare claim there is an undeniable evidence which two has contributed the most. I’m not saying we should strike all philosophy and/or spiritual talk from our minds, but, when people begin to sway other people that THEIR philosophical observation is THE TRUTH, then i begin to get cranly and start wagging an admonishing finger at them. You should rather direct your very words to Leo Gura himself, because clearly his position on how life works seems unshakable and is self-claimed as certainty.

And seeing you making rhis reply makes me wonder why exactly you appear to defend Leo and his almost ludicrous preaching of truth... Also, I have been down this route (through a period of severe anxiety disprder) where I convinced myaelf that I HAD to question everything, because I took things to the exteme and made the conclusion: “ if I literally can not FULLY, without shadow of a doubt, know anything, then I can not even trick myawlf into making any sort of assumptions that at least FEELS true, and so whatever I wanted to believe, never really seemed to stick, or got so that I could convince myself that “okay, I can believe this now. I can let go of further questioning until proof of anything otherwise appears”. I can tell you this much, even if god himself descended from the very heavens and commanded me to never assume anything is certain in life, I would defiantly spit him in the face in utter revolt. I’m NOT going back into that shit again . No. Fucking. Way!!!! If I do, I stand to lose everything (including my health) and nothing significant to gain. This is also why I am so offensive with my commenting on Leo’s video because I think that he’s ultimately leading people into a downward spiral of existential terror and anxiety with a carrot-on-a-stick method balting them “the promise land” once they reach the other side...

What I find interesting about the imprinting concept is that... Well, I for example, was raised in a religious household, but I always doubted the religion. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that I rebelled against my imprinting, it just means my imprinting, rather than imprinting faith, intentionally or not, imprinted doubt. There's a lot of subtleties to the idea, is what I'm getting at.

I remember being a kid and thinking “Can’t the grownups see their own behavior?” I remember thinking of it in pictures instead of words. I saw a lot of fights, drunkenness, and sexual things I had no business seeing at a very young age. How was it that I, as a child, could figure out that we can watch our own selves and change our behavior but none of the adults in my life could?

You have set another life on a great path. Feels like the target is so far away right now though. Thank you Leo. "I dont know" feels so much better than saying God spoke the universe into existence, or Any of the man made attempts to explain the prime reality we call religion. Struggling with your words that science too is a belief. I get that belief infects science, but at it core it is designed to avoid deception and cognitive bias or dissonance. I bet you have explained this better elsewhere.

"1 + 1 = 2 is a priori bullshit because it is bullshit." Great argument there Leo... No, 1 + 1 = 2 is, in fact, actually true in the system within it operates. What you are questioning is the utility and veracity of mathematics itself. By doing so, you yourself are engaging in the fallacy of empiricism, which is itself built on a base set of assumptions, central of which is that objective (sensory) reality is somehow more real than subjective reality. This is itself, a self-deception, because one assumes that objective reality is somehow more real than the subjective, when individuated subjective reality is arguably just as real as objectivity if not more real, considering that perception of the objective ineluctably relies on the filtering of the subjective. Objectivity is subject to the subjective in order to be conceivable. (That being said, we cannot even trust that these planes of thinking exist on a duality.) In trying to combat self-deception, you ironically self-deceive. You are caught within your own mental maze using the very map that you yourself decry.

Just arrived at the point in the video where you ask, how do you choose of the 5 cohesive world view points correctly ? Of course you don't but perhaps you can ask yourself: Which one will serve me the best according to my current knowledge of life ? Which one seems the most objective in this realm of subjectivity ? Which one brings the most joy, love peace and happiness to me and those around me ? How can we make the best out of this life for us, those around us and those after us ?
@ActualizedOrg
@ActualizedOrg 7 жыл бұрын
Except your mind isn't going to let you choose like that. The mind will never objectively weigh the pros and cons of 5 different worldviews. It will dogmatically cling to the first worldview -- regardless of how dysfunctional it is -- as reality. Once the mind establishes its reference frame, it considers that REALITY, which means it will not and virtually cannot take any other worldview seriously. That is the tragedy of paradigm blindness. When you're inside a paradigm, you don't know you're inside a paradigm because you've mistaken it for reality and you've becoming so deeply attached to it, that you'd rather die than see the world through another perspective.
@ActualizedOrg
@ActualizedOrg 6 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Vodrazka Except the mother of all self-deception is self-agenda and self-survival. So what you are unwittingly doing here is choosing a worldview which supports your self-survival the most. So you are setting yourself up for the grandest of self-deceptions because everything you do will be predicated upon selfishness. All your views of reality will be biased by self-agenda. It is as if you are a judge or a scientist who says: "Okay, I will just make my judgments and measurements according to what suits my self-interest." This is the epitome of corruption. Self-agenda is the direct opposite of Truth.
@holistic_dan
@holistic_dan 6 жыл бұрын
Okay, I see what you are saying and I understand this idea that the self is an illusion. But what do you suggest then ? Don't you think that there is a lot of unnecessary suffering around the world and that perhaps a lot of things could be better ? And that noone can make them better but you, and me (which is the same I know) ? What Im saying is that you have to take some agenda in order to give your life meaning. Even if there is none. And taking interest in humanity seems to be the most logical thing to do. No matter how deeply anyone understands or experiences non-duality or the nature of truth, at the end of the day they will find themselves in this human body, limited by their unique set of capabilities, with which, much like consciousness work, it takes time and practice to get better. So the question seems to be one of, how do you best spend your time ? Perhaps you can meditate yourself out of this earthly plane and leave these other "seemingly conscious" beings behind but I personally find humanity and its many colorful aspects and pallets of experience eternally beautiful and fascinating. Its like the ultimate video game, with us being the characters who also have the ability to discover the code from which its all made up. Its the ultimate show. There is million different paths that one can take, and that we can take as a species .. I think its all about balance. Sure, get a big picture understanding of reality. But you can do that doing anything. But somebody also has to work out the systems, we are the gods, making up our future. So find that sweet spot between the universe and the nitty gritty mud called life. Just cover your life with awareness, day by day and follow your own, personal path.

Leo, I've been meditating for about a year now. Most self-inquire for many reasons, such as enlightment. But one day I was asked: why is it that I religiously meditate and do all this work? The best answer I had was: because I'm bored. After watching these episodes it feels like a self deception. No solid reason for meditation, but feel the need to do it anyway. So am I deceiving myself into believing I need to meditate? but that within itself is a self deception to believe that I shouldn't so I won't do it? I'm conflicted and confused but as usual I'll just keep doing the work for the sake of doing it. As this feels more like a hobby and filler for my boredom, but at the same time in the back of my mind this feels like something that shouldn't be taken lightly.

I also used to feel like you when I started out. At first meditation might seem to require effort. But actually it is the natural effortless resting state of your being. it is said a sage does the minimum that is required. Shunryu Suzuki's book "Zen mind, Beginners Mind" is great for dissolving these doubts. Another suggestion is to just sit with your boredom, allow it to exist but don't let it move you into any thought trains or actions. Just stay with it, taste it completely, become it. Do this just as an exploration. you can do this with any sensation/feeling/emotion/attitude good luck & blessings!
