I'm a 21 year veteran LEO, former Army LRSU vet., and current firearms and tactics trainer. Since you asked what LEO's carry, I thought I'd accomodate you. I chose the "Clinch Pick" for on and off duty carry. Small fixed blades are more conducive to self defense in tight quarters IMHO. Folders can be "fouled" during deployment by clothing, body position, or other objects close by (think inside a patrol vehicle). Just my thoughts; nice vid.

I just got a CRKT Haiho, a Williams design and I absolutely love the fit and finish and the blade design. The thumb disk needs a slightly different motion to open but the knife locks up solidly and has the LAWKS system to make the knife essentially a fixed blade. It has become my daily carry along with a jack knife style for regular tasks.

I'm in no rush to use a knife for self-defense, but if, God forbid, I had to, my Cold Steel Talwar would do the trick. The handle is almost unbelievably ergonomic in all grips, it has a pronounced integral guard, Tri-Ad lock, and it waves open with a thumb plate. Deployment is smooth as butter, but it locks like a bear trap, and is secure for thrusting or cutting. The full flat ground, XHP blade is both a useful tool and a fearsome weapon. The stock is thick and strong, but the Persian blade is wide, so it tapers to a thin profile behind the edge, which is wickedly sharp and very resilient. It has a deep belly and an acute, but reinforced tip, so it slices like a scalpel and pierces like a rapier. All of which means it's great for the things I regularly use it to do - preparing food and opening packages - but if it comes down to a matter of life and death, the Talwar is ready for duty.

Personally, I’d say if you wanted a self defense knife, you would want to get a blade designed for it. You don’t seem to have an interest and that’s fine. I will say though, a lot of things can go wrong with a folder if you try to defend yourself with it. As always, something is better than nothing

I believe the SOG Mini Pentagon has a flexible sheath is because its made to be carried as a boot knife, between ankle and boot wall. If you have 5.11 boots, some have sheaths built in on the outside of the boots. As a police officer I carried a RAT-1 for many years. Strong, deploys quickly and can be used for daily tasks without a lot of looks. But for the last few months I'm trying out a SOG ZOOM. It's very light weight and has a slim profile; plus I wow it on BugetBugOut channel on Veterans Day. So far a good knife but the clip grabs my pants so tight, its hard to deploy.

I've carried a defensive knife for many years now and thankfully haven't had to use it and i wouldn't say i would b happy to do so against another person because i believe life is the single most precious thing we have and its to be protected at any cost but these days more often than not i have my kids with me most of the time and if the situation ever arose where their life was put in jeopardy in any way i believe myself capable of doing what i have to do to protect those i love and i have had some training with a few of the knifes i own i wouldn't say I'm a tough guy by any means but im decent enough that i think i have a better chance than someone with no training at all but regardless of the steps I've taken to b well prepared to defend myself and my loved ones i could not see taking another persons life as anything i could take lightly and would most likely weigh very heavy on my soul

@@johndebaptist3127 The alternative is the brightest tactical flashlight you can find (Wowtac makes good ones) and dog spray or pepper spray. I would say these are more effective, useful, and less likely to cause legal problems in a self defence situation.

EDC changes from time to time. Right pocket usually holds a Cold Steel Voyager XL in either Vaquero or Tanto, CS Talwar XL, or CS Spartan. Left pocket always has the Practical Tactical pen for easy and fast off hand use. I'm not coordinated enough with my left hand to deploy a folder under stress, but the pen is far better than a punch. It also allows for assistance in retaining the sidearm if there is a struggle with my right hand. Right rear pocket always holds a Gerber EAB. If you don't carry one, I suggest trying it. It saves your primary blade for defensive use and not utility. They're $9 and super small. Usually when dog walking I'll clip on my belt a CS Spike via a tek lok for cross draw right or reverse grip left. Small and light enough to not be annoying but fast and accessible enough to be used for SD. The bear claw is a good little knife and better than nothing but it seems too small for SD.

Retired Peace Officer, and I carried the TDI. I like the sheath because you have to rotate the knife "backwards" to pull it out. This means someone standing in front of you would have a harder time disarming you of the TDI because they would be pulling forward. Also, the knife hid itself well among the other items on my duty belt. Any weapon you carry can be taken from you and used against you.

I carry up to 3 knives on me. one small folding blade for minor tasks, or a small box cutter if I know I'm going to be cutting lots of junk to save my knives. I call that blade my working or my 'don't panic' knife. Again if I know I'm going somewhere that I need a multi tool, I carry a Leatherman Wingman which has some surprising comfortable ergonomics for reverse grip, this is mostly carry for the extra tools and is usually one I feel comfortable handing to people when asked to borrow a blade. Finally I carry a CRKT Crawford Kasper, and this is the knife I like to call 'negotiations have failed'. On my weak side, I'll carry a Kershaw Chill, or sometimes an Emerson. Both are slim profiled, easily and quickly deployed.

For most people who don't train it is the CS Raja II, anyone chop. Smaller is the CS Tri-lite 4" anyone can stab or voyager XL(the weight of the blade deploys it with a wrist snap). If you really what you are doing it is the Spyderco street bowie by Fred Perrin. Once you under the advantages of the Corsican grip you will never want to carry anything else. Second place would be the CS OSI (not OSS) with micarta handle not kraton, 3rd Bark River JX4 (but only for medium sized hands). Honorable mention is the CS Laredo Bowie, pull that bad boy out and everyone will know you mean business. You should not carry wounding knives, dead men tell no tales in court and they can't sue you either.

I have the Kabar as a backup to my primary defense weapon. I love how it fits but I don't care for the sheath, I wish it had more options to change the angle of carry. The clip on the sheath really don't work wider belts too. At time I wish it had a better way to secure it to the inside of the pocket. The knife itself is great but I wish the sheath was designed better. Thanks for the review! 👌👍

People are idiots when it comes to knives in self defense. I worked in a prison for 8 years and knife/shank fighting is ugly and sloppy. Many convicts tape the shanks to their hands before attacking someone, because the blood makes knives very slippery. I have also seen one particular guy get stabbed in the torso over 35 times, and was still fighting vigorously. Your body's organs can and do shift slightly in the surrounding fluids, to avoid bullets. No joke. What do you think it does with knives? My point...you can think you are a tough guy, but using knives as self defense is difficult at best, unless you are trained, and even then, it can still be tricky to incapacitate someone quickly.
@jonathanhughes8670
@jonathanhughes8670 7 жыл бұрын
It's true, knives aren't the best option, not by a long way. I get the feeling the reality of fighting isn't very well understood- what it feels like in the moment and what really happens. Like you say a knife, or even a gun, isn't going to stop a determined attacker in one motion/shot. I think the point of carrying a self-defense knife in general is more of a very last option- the thing you go for when you can't run away. Most people, in most parts of the world, most of the time, can't carry anything that can be described as a weapon, so if you can have atleast a knife you've got something to work with. There are probably too many out there who think that carrying a knife will keep them safe- a sort of false confidence. That said, my limited experience in public safety showed my that a lot of people are tough and threatening right up until they get punched in the face (like Mike Tyson said about having a plan). When it comes to it, I would rather have a pointy stick than an empty hand, but then again I would much rather have space to move or time to get away.
@Patriot4TheTree
@Patriot4TheTree 7 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Hughes I agree 100% and I'm not implying that people shouldn't carry knives on them. I'm merely saying that people REALLY, need to lower their expectations of what they can accomplish with that knife. A knife is a far greater tool, than weapon. But a knife in conjunction with pepper spray in conjunction with a pistol (depending on your commie state) is a better system. All require training. And as you pointed out, situational awareness is your greatest weapon.

thequietone Most of the time, shanks are made from things like mop bucket handles and look like ice picks. Once in a while, they will get their hands on a piece of plexi glass and shape it like a knife. They scrape or grind them on concrete until sharp. You can also melt a razor, removed from a shaving razor, and melt it into a toothbrush to use as a slashing weapon, but these are far less effective. No, he didn't die. They never die, it seems like. They are like fucking cock roaches. Tax dollar draining cock roaches. But, most of these guys are in top physical shape, which greatly increases their chances of surviving such attacks. Even guys on segregation workout vigorously in their cells. It seems though, that their chances of dying from an overdose than an attack, is much higher. I worked in a crazy ass max, between Baltimore and DC though, so I'm sure other prisons around the country are run a little better and have less incidents.

Jugular cut or femoral cut, then be prepared for a 2-3 minute fight. Adrenalin + endorphins produced during a fight will keep your opponent going unless he is bleeding out. Cut, then submissive hold until quiet. Not finding an opening for these two options requires another defense strategy.

(I really really wish Ka-Bar still sold their tdi class Hinderer with a wharncliffe design opposed to the abomination currently going round) I've fallen down this rabbit hole of particular blades (2 main reasons, 1 being I fenced and really acclimated 2 pistol grips... which look absolutely different than what you'd imagine but same fundamental idea,) and other contenders seem to be: A. Esee's izula tertiary push dagger. B. Benchmade's SOCP dagger (cheapest you can buy from BM) but can get a clone for 10 bucks 2 see if you like the concept C. Cold Steel's push daggers which go from XXL-XXL, smallest being Mini Pal. Super cheap. Barely visible. D. Crkts Minimalist Katana (if you have smaller hands). (And larger ones which are black sheep/off topic, larger/require training/pricey: Spyderco Civilian/Matriarch + Yojimbo. A mere hobbyist opinion. Haven’t ever been in a knife fight, only once was close to despite a blade loving bipolar friend holding me at knife point 3 different times. Least he didn’t make me bleed like another. I usually have a fox 511 kerambit in left pocket, with that wave feature its probably one of the fastest "get off me" knives there is, (besides a fixed blade of course) the nice thing about the kerambit style whether folding or fixed blade is they are fast to deploy even when wearing gloves or heavy winter clothing, no fumbling at thumbholes or thumb studs, just grab the ring and pull.

As an LEO I carry a knife on my weak side so that I have access to it with my left hand in the event I have to use my right hand for gun retention in the situation that I'm fighting a suspect and they are trying to disarm me. That way I can use my knife to slash and stab the suspect until they stop fighting me for my gun at which time I can take further action. Same applies when I'm off duty. I would never get into a back alley knife fight with someone. If a person pulls a knife on me...I pull a gun on them. The knife is there for times when/if I ever have to get someone off me that is trying to take my gun from me or for some reason I can't get to my gun but I'm in a physical altercation that I cannot immediately escape from.

Rippers pokers and little stabbers are no good unless it's tendon, artery and deep organ...eyes too. @@ZSmith-yy4lv I completely agree, unfortunately there hasn't been a CC permit issued in 10 years or so. Karambit is probably my best legal option for now.

j c while karambits can be lethal, they are most effective in the hands of someone with formal training. If you have that, then great. If you don’t, then Personally, I would recommend the clinch pick by shiv works. It’s designed by a formal combat instructor that focuses on encounters less than 5 feet away. It is most likely legal for you, and every aspect of it is designed for combat. I personally believe stabbing is an important thing to be able to do, and a curved blade limits your ability to do so. It is also designed so that even if someone grabs your hand, you can still cut them. I don’t know your physical state, but the clinch pick is very effective even if you are weaker than your opponent.

Just unscrew the clip and the TDI can work on either side and fit the same way on either side.

Once been stapped with Victorinox.whatever... It is sharp! I have had about three years Kbar tdi - the ergo i is great! IF I carry it I place it in back of my belt. Ambidexrtous reach and whichever way the blade comes out - it is SD ready.

I'm no authority on knife fighting, but someone I know who is says, if you get in a knife fight, you will get cut. So, I guess don't get into a knife fight unless you're very very close to an emergency room.

I'm in a little bit of a different situation, I honestly carry the schrade 10.3 inch Leroy bowie knife, but not for defense against people but against feral dogs, my sister has been attacked twice on her way to the bus stop, so I carry the Leroy when I walk my 8 year-old daughter there, figure this knife has enough length and mass to stop a dog but I don't know for sure. I am open to suggestions as to a better tool against a dog that's not a firearm, I can't own them due to a family members legal troubles who is living with me and tight gun laws ( but no knife restrictions) where I live.

In my Humble opinion there is no Good or bad knife in a situation where one is needed HOWEVER THERE IS NO SUCH THING as a "KNIFE FIGHT" Miguel Zubiri taught me who ever get there's out first wins. Period Esp if they have even have a minute or the Smallest bit of skill. Either Real training or some people even worse are those KZbin Edge Weapon Experts. You know them... SEE ONE ... DO ONE ... TEACH ONE.. lol... In truth It is very simple... "In close-quarters fighting there is no more deadly weapon than the knife. In choosing a knife there are two important factors to bear in mind: balance and keenness. The hilt should fit easily in your hand, and the blade should not be so heavy that it tends to drag the hilt from your fingers in a loose grip. It is essential that the blade have a sharp stabbing point and good cutting edges, because an artery torn through (as against a clean cut) tends to contract and stop the bleeding. If a main artery is cleanly severed, the wounded man will quickly lose consciousness and die"....

I teach fire arms, open hand edge weapons and weapons of opportunity. Based on bio-mechanics,and probability. One thing I make my students do is go home the first night and write a letter to loved ones on why they failed to protect them via tools they bought and where not ready to use. It forces them to think things the whole way through. you can usually tell who is full of shit at that time. vs those that did the exercise.

If you are carry a gun on strong side why would you crossdraw a knife in an effort to defend your pistol? Cross drawing would open you up to getting your gun or your knife taken imo. The whole idea of a defensive knife I thought from what I have seen is to protect your strong side, so you can gain an opportunity to unholster the pistol once you have deployed a knife with your weak side to fight off an attacker. So retention with strong side and defend the pistol with the knife on the weak side. Cross draw opens up too much room for an attacker to jam that arm that is reaching across your body for a knife. It's not like he won't notice that you are going after something, and decide now is the time to punch you into next week, and beat the brakes off you.

That variant of the bear claw is dope. I know you dont really need edge retention with a defense blade, especially if its serrated, but it still pisses me off the CRKT cut such a huge corner with the steel choice. Aus4 is absolute trash. There are gas station knives with better steel. That's not an acceptable steel for a major brand to sell, and 40 bucks? No good. Shame.

Would you you guys recommend getting the TDI with a serrated edge or the flat edge? I suppose the serrated would be more useful in self defence and the flat edge could be sharpened so you could use it for anything you want.
@ZSmith-yy4lv
@ZSmith-yy4lv 4 жыл бұрын
I would personally say flat. It would cut better and not snag on clothes. The last thing you want is to slash an attacker and have the knife get caught up on a shirt.
