Surviving domestic abuse and talking to the police really shifted my perspective on law enforcement. My (now) ex had woken me up with a knife against my eyeball, babbling incoherently about some plot to kill him. When I managed to get him off me and grab a phone he slapped it out of my hands. I started screaming at that point and my next door neighbour, bless her, called the police. When the cops did show up they saw my hysterical ass, his calm demeanour, and believed his story that I had 'freaked out on him due to hormones'. I was given a warning not to call police for no reason again (reminder here that my NEIGHBOUR called) and made to go back inside while the boys had a chat about how 'crazy' I was. When people say "oh my brother/uncle/canary is a cop and he's a good guy" I think back to stories people in my family told about cops having to deal with 'crazy' women and how my story probably is among those.

I was in an abusive situation once where I was able to get away and I was so scared I threw my phone in the middle of the street bc I didn’t want him to find a way to track me and come after me…I was so scared. He called the police and said I was suicidal and they drove around looking for me. I was walking to my moms when they put their lights on and found me. They asked what was going on and as soon as I said “boyfriend” I was cut off and the cops laughed and said “oh okay it all makes sense now” and then went on to talk about how “crazy their wives are.” It was shocking to say the least.

I am a survivor of domestic abuse in a homosexual relationship and I understand that fear, truly. What truly got me all the way fucked up was the cops. They completely talked down to her like she was just a crazy woman and didn't take that disturbance situation seriously at all and it was just another case of cops downplaying a situation that truly needed to be taken seriously. With the amount of times I've heard in true crime stories of the cops not taking issues seriously and ending up like this or much, much worse is absolutely astronomical to me. Then a harsh crime occurs from their neglect and they get no repercussions whatsoever and it actually infuriates me.

I had a similar encounter with cops after being assaulted. I guess I wasn't assaulted enough for them to really care. They were not at all compassionate and really poor about explaining what filing a report meant or not, etc. One was genuinely trying not to laugh. They did all they could to talk me out of pursuing action. It took a lot to want to call them in the first place because ACAB and all that and they certainly didn't change my mind on that front. (Not looking for advice here-we later filed a report after another woman in our neighborhood was a victim of attempted assault by the same guy.)

Can the police be investigated for any failure of duty on the night the employee calls them? Absolutely shocking that an uninvolved civilian reported a threat of danger, and the policeman later asks her, "what makes you think you were in danger?", and refuses to signpost her to even the most basic resources in place for that situation. That policeman could have saved Christians life 🤷

Police do not have a duty to protect any individual against harm was the ruling from Warren vs District of Columbia. So, nope! "Protect and serve" is the "Live, Laugh, Love" of police. What are police for you ask? With a few notable exceptions, most police forces in the US were formed to round up escaped slaves. Their overall purpose has not changed, to protect the interests of the wealthy elite.

@@greywolf7577Do you know why people don't? Because often times it's the man who is the aggressor. Don't forget that not that long ago in human history, women weren't even allowed to leave abusive men and it was seen as okay to hit your wife. My Grandma, who is in her 80s, has lift through both school segregation and women not being allowed to have their own bank account. The united states did not mandate the bank's had to offer their services to women until the 1960's! There are a lot of abusive men that have had their lives ended by the women they abused for far too long. That doesn't make them a victim. It means they were served justice. You don't have the right to abuse someone. And if you keep doing it, you invite this possibility of being murdered in self defense.

I’m so thankful you approached this from a perspective of nuance and understanding that DA/DV cases are not always cut and dry. It’s not always one person who is solely the aggressor and abuser etc. things can get very very messy very quickly. In toxic relationships that include physical violence things can go from screaming to death very quickly in the right circumstances when it’s least expected and it’s truly horrific and sad. It seems like there are several layers to this relationship and things were sadly very complicated and messy. Only the two of them will ever truly know what happened through their relationship and the night of the death. Please, if anyone out there is struggling with an abusive or otherwise toxic relationship please reach out for help. People and resources exist for you. I know it’s not easy, I know it can be painful, scary, sad, heartbreaking, and so much more. But no relationship is worth your life or your sanity and no one wants to see you in a situation like this no matter what end of the knife you’re on. You deserve happiness and SAFETY. Edit: I like when you cover these types of cases that most people shy away from in the legal world due to the nature of the charges. I think it’s important these are spoken about from a legal perspective that carries enough empathy to understand whilst not being overly bias or calling out your personal biases where they come into affect. Much love ❤

@@zeynepgulsu1899 I think you’re oversimplifying by insisting that any interpersonal dynamic is “always” anything. However, I will say that in domestic violence, mutual violence is often mistaken for mutual abuse. Domestic violence has been studied for many years in many countries. And, overwhelmingly, the studies have examined domestic violence in cishet romantic relationships. As a result of these studies, we know that violence by women is almost always done in self defense-even in a particular interaction when the woman may (technically) initiate the violence, it’s usually done to defend or ward off previous or ongoing abuse/violence from their partner. The elevator video could be a good example of this. The woman was fleeing from him, he pursues her, and he successfully manages to force her into an enclosed space with him. Without context, one could view this video and believe she was the aggressor or abuser in the relationship because she appeared to initiate the violence. However, she most likely was reacting to the ongoing attack that she was likely fleeing. He was exerting control over her and she was fighting back. I’m not condoning, defending, or praising any action. I’m merely examining the larger picture. One of the simplest points that speaks to the truth behind the complexity of domestic violence is what happens when the couple is separated. When a heterosexual couple experiencing domestic violence is separated-relationship is ending and they’re living apart-it is rare for men to experience any further violence. In direct contrast, this time period is traditionally the most dangerous for women. The abuser is being deprived of their victim and they seek to regain control and/or punish their victim (too often, the punishment proves lethal for women). In this reality alone, we can see that (almost always) the violence has distinctly different motivations for women and men. One is defensive and reactive while the other is calculated and abusive.

@@zeynepgulsu1899 I totally disagree. I was a victim of very one sided (& horrific) abuse for a decade of my life. But I still recognize that it's not always as clear as a good guy & a bad guy. I saw an in-depth video from Stephanie Harlowe about this one and MAN is it messy. I would love to hear more about it as things are uncovered and explored. The serious problem here that really gets me (and I know I'm not alone here) is the cops. Whether she abused him or he abused her or they took turns abusing one another, it doesn't change the fact she stood there and asked for help. The response she got only reinforces the way most people feel about reporting SA/DV. Why should any of us seek help from authorities if they are just going to tell you to go away essentially. It's such a sad system and it fails people constantly. I was once in an abusive relationship and never even seriously thought about asking for help from anyone specifically because of instances like this.

She has a 3rd party account - the lobby manager - that she was attempting to get away and separate herself and he still made efforts to come after her in a physical manner in which others felt they needed to step in. She then was immediately recorded by police as saying she feared for her safety and wanted to know how to obtain a restraining order. I have no idea how someone would be able to make a 100% judgement that she is the primary abuser after that. Even with the elevator video, she is clearly trying to escape from him like he's a predator. The person doing the running away is almost never the abuser.

Agree. There was a lot of “I’m not going to get into that” when it came to a lot of things highlighting the victim as…well, a victim, but a LOT of time dedicated to aspects that made the woman who stabbed a knife 3 inches into the victim’s chest, through his sternum, look like a victim. Ultimately though, I do lean on the side of cutting her a break for her take here, because what she was saying about victims in domestic violence and abusive relationships IS true. I imagine that as a woman and a lawyer, these topics are something that she can speak on more than most and share the nuance and complexities in a light that aren’t widely known or talked about. So I did appreciate that aspect; however, juxtaposing all of the “woman who are being abused” when talking about the woman versus talking about all of the abuser behavior talking about the man who was killed definitely was a little…pointed? As if she was implying those things applied in this case (even if she said ‘I’m not saying that’s the case here, but…’ afterward). Maybe it was just the structure and flow chosen that made me feel soke type of way, but I didn’t feel nearly as much impartiality or “unsuredness” that she said she had in the beginning. Idk, just missed the mark on this one for me, but I’m sure others would say the exact opposite for a version of this video that I would feel like would be more “balanced.” Still a great creator with good content either way! Can’t win em all! 😂🤷🏽‍♂️

He charged at her in an apartment lobby in front of witnesses. That right there makes it seem he was very comfortable with this kind of behavior. I honestly can't make heads or tails of this with the little facts out there, but the few facts I do know, I have to wonder how much of her behavior is really a symptom of "reactive abuse ". Also, I wish more of the world understood things like reactive abuse and power and control within DV. Ever since the Depp V. Heard case its quite apparent we need more DV education in this world. Thanks for taking time to include educational info about power and control. More people need to understand how power and control play out in DV. Great content. I love your channel.

The problem is that people only care about reactive abuse when it is a woman reacting to a man's abuse. If a man was reacting to a woman's abuse, he'd still be blamed. If the boyfriend had killed the girlfriend in this case, then people would not be giving him the benefit of the doubt that they give the girlfriend here.

My wife and I used to live near some bars and restaurants in the Los Feliz/Silverlake area of Los Angeles. One Summer’s night, we were woken up around 1:30AM, by a couple arguing loudly on the street below our home. At first we were more annoyed than anything else, because they were loud. A few minutes later, the woman started yelling rape, and I immediately jumped up, called 911 and got dressed to go outside. My wife stayed at home with our baby and our dog. The couple seemed to be moving around our block, so when 911 asked the location, I told them the street names, but they insisted on an address, so I told them our address, but adamantly told them that the couple was not at this address, but somewhere around it and that they were on the move. As I left the house to attempt to get a better location, of the incident, I started to realize that the male was in a car, driving around the block, and the female was on foot, more or less following the car and periodically yelling rape. So, definitely not a rape. She was angry at the guy and was hurling the most damning thing she could think of, at him. She also threw some of our neighbor’s potted plants into the street. As the police car finally arrived, around 6-7 minutes later, the couple had rejoined another couple, near the bars, where I suspect the argument started, and the police drove right past them and headed straight to our address. At this point, the female got into the passenger side of the car and they drove away, with the other couple in their own separate vehicle. I made my way back to our house, as quickly as I could, to discover, to my horror, that the police had entered our house, with weapons drawn and found their way to the entrance of our bedroom! Luckily, our elderly dog, that was deaf, slept through the intruders, because she could have easily attacked them, which I’m sure would have provoked the cops into shooting. I see a lot of comments, here and on other similar posts, from women, talking about how people treated them as if they were lying or that they were, “crazy”. I get the frustration. I also have to say that couples in the throws of an argument do crazy things. women do sometimes behave irrationally and scream rape, when that’s not what was happening, as in this case. This was toxicity in a relationship where it looked like both of them were dishing out ugliness. Her decision to start screaming, “rape”, lead to a very dangerous situation that could have been a disaster, for us, just because we tried to come to the aid of a woman we thought was in danger. Leeja, you do a great job of illustrating how domestic violence is a very difficult thing to figure out who is the victim and who is the perpetrator. As you said, it definitely isn’t black and white, in the majority of instances. As my experience, shows, the dynamics of toxic relationships is inherently irrational and volatile. Because so much of what plays out happens when there are no other witnesses, a lot has to be inferred from bits of cryptic evidence, here and there. Clearly, women are killed, in abusive relationships, more often than men. That doesn’t mean men are never victims of abuse and even murder. Sometimes a woman claiming rape, is not rape, at all, as my experience, in this case, shows. The potential for really bad things to happen, is pretty clear. This situation is very sad and I don’t have much faith that the justice system will get to the truth.

The previous multiple, extreme DUIs point to her problems with alcohol and other substances. She also had zero defensive wounds in those pictures right after "threatened for her life" to use lethal force. He deserves justice in this case.

This seems to be going to trial really quickly. There's a murder trial from my home town scheduled to start in January. The accused was arrested in December of 2019. While I understand that a pandemic happened in the interim and that a capital case is going to take longer to get to trial than a case for second degree murder, 4 months between arrest and trial seems super short for her attorney to prepare a defense. Even if she retained counsel in April, 8 months doesn't sound like all that long for either side to prep.

I stopped the video at this point to recognize my triggers. I don’t know if you will be fairer in your account of the story. I may just be bearing down hard on my perspective. I will start the video and see where it and you go, however, I wanted to acknowledge my feelings because sometimes in this country those feelings are ignored. He was trying to protect himself without injuring Courtney - he certainly didn't use any more force than he needed to in order to keep her from pummeling him. Second, Courtney was 'fighting back' in the elevator? Huh? Uh, in order to 'fight back,' doesn't another party have to initiating the fighting? As far as the video demonstrated, there was no 'fighting back.' There was, however, a grown woman failing to regulate her behavior and assaulting her boyfriend.

The first time I heard about it was cuz we were stuck in traffic on the way to school, and on the radio they said it was caused by a fire that broke out in the early morning. And that early reports said it was possibly arson by neighbours who didn't want this "Homolka" person moving into their neighborhood. Whether this turned out to be true or not I don't know, but it was reported she didn't move there, so 🤷

Thank you for this video, as a survivor of an extremely violent and controlling relationship I can say that I fought back and sometimes it would have looked like I was the aggressor. I am just thankful that I had the support of womans aid and police Scotland’s DAU when things came to a crash and he tried to come back and make me look like the violent one which was scary especially when you have untrained police taking the side of someone who you are in fear of. I was grateful to work with police who were trained and that gave me the strength to carry on. I see so many cases in the USA that make my blood boil, I’m not saying the system in the UK is flawless but I think it definitely supports victims more that in the USA. There’s so many women (and men) locked up because the defended themselves and god forbid they had a drug or alcohol issue !! Seems like instead of wanting to help the system over there just likes to lock ppl up. I had to also go through civil court to help protect my daughter which again I had the support from WA and my police liaison from the DAU even the civil court in the USA is a mess if you don’t have money and you are a woman or of a minority then you have no chance, which saddens me. Thankfully I do see that there’s a lot of organisations fighting to hide woman who are fleeing a DV situation and aren’t receiving help from the courts and police. As survivors we have a duty to speck up and help change the system within our own and within other countries, because it can be a cultural issues as well the number of minority women fleeing Dv relationships is through the roof and when the leave they have even less support because it can be seen as shameful to walk away from a marriage especially with children, it’s terrible the number of minority ppl that end up dead at the hand of their family and not the abuser because of the shame they have brought on their family which is absolutely absurd and now being in the position where I get to work with these women and help them find their inner strength to re gain their lives truly fills my life with a purpose I never thought all those years ago that I would have. Please if you are reading this and you need help to leave and be safe, do not wait, take the first safe opportunity to leave and go to your nearest refuge as they will support you when and if you chose to go to the police. Do not wait until you are in the position where defending yourself may lead to you losing your freedom because the judiciary system sucks !! Be safe and know you are not alone, it will get better and you can have the life you deserve 🤗 Love ya Leeja, keep going queen you are a light in a murky pool and you 100% help more than you will ever know.
