Self study German to pass B2 exam for University: tips from B1 to B2, Deutschlernen journey

I needed to get to B2 in german to get accepted at my masters program in Germany (a lot of German Uni need this from international students). Here is how I self studied to go from B1 to B2 to pass the Goethe B2 exam on the first try, as well as some tips for each exam section for those of you who are planning on self studying for the exam. The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! I think this really depends on your mother tongue! It might be easier to start with French and then go to German since French has less gendered particles (le la les) vs German (der die das dem den etc). If you’re good at grammar rules tho, I think both will be the same so I would decide based on whichever has more interesting content you like to consume (Netflix or YT videos about topics you like) hope that helps 😄

Hi definitely immersion! If you’re a visual learner I would recommending reading and rewatching TV series in German that you already know. Otherwise I think working your way up with textbooks for the foundational grammar should also help if you’re starting from zero. Easy German KZbin channel helped me a lot when I was first starting as well, they have content segmented by level of German as well!

I think as a beginner, doing a course with a prof who only spoke German really helped as well as watching the easy German interviews (they have beginner playlists and German English subtitles for all vids)! I think most common 100 or so verbs and basic nouns is also helpful to quickly start understanding sentences. If anyone else has ideas please comment! 😄

I didn’t have to take that exam, but i would take a lot of practice exams (old ones from google/Reddit) to make sure you can answer all Qs in time! And focus on whichever section you scored the lowest on in practice for the remaining time before the exam (also maybe do 10m of B2/B1/C1 level vocab every day at least) Viel Glück 🍀

Thank you so much for your video, I'm preparing for the B2 exam and your video, and resources are a big help for me! I worry mostly about the Schreiben part, I'd say i have lots of good vocabulary but my grammar is sometimes not perfekt, i know the adjective endings well but i still confuse sometimes... Is it really important to use lots of complicated words and sentence structures? I just don't know what the examiners expect from someone who has B2 level :/

I think you need to use some vocab (transitions they taught etc) as long as your text is understandable it should be ok in my experience! I also have the same problem with adj lol

Hey, do you mean like normal reading books or just like grammar books? I don't read many books in german (not super into reading novels lol) but if you have a favourite book you know word by word, I would suggest finding a german translation of it and reading that as a starting point. In my experience (I like reading webtoons/manga) since I am reading a translation of a series I already know word for word, my brain automatically associates the new german words with the english ones, helping me learn more vocab in context (and it doesn't feel like "work"). If you mean grammar books, I really liked using Grammatik Aktiv B2-C1 by Cornelsen since it was well organized with lots of illustrations (I'm a visual learner lol). Each lesson was nicely separated into respective B2 or C1 levels too which was helpful.

Hi! You can find the model exams on the Goethe website (just google Goethe b2 model exam)! I use Spotify for German podcasts but I think most stream on all platforms (apple music pandora etc)

Was once there so totally understand, starting with words that have both languages is def better if you’re not comfortable. Again this was what my learning journey looked like, yours might be diff so do what works for you!! 😄

It depends on where your current level is at and how long you’re studying for everyday. For me I started self studying from B1.2/B2.1 level and it took me a month to finish learning grammar from scratch, and another 3 weeks to really drill vocab/read/review for the exam (~4-6h every day). What level are you starting at?
