Tried the tubs, for the first time this year. I used Bumble Bee Junction's soil mix receipt.... So far... WOW! My neighbor,who is a good gardener,is impressed. My tub garden is ahead of his and more veggies too!!! I don't have to weed,and I water once a week ( I goofed on the heights of holes). Would I suggest other people to try it? YES!!! I'm 69 years old getting around on bad knees is hard for me. I decided to use the veggies as decorations. Right out on my front porch! And they look nice!!! Thank you Daniel and Leon.

Make sure you have ample air flow under the canopy. Trim all leaves that touch the soil and try to lift it up farther off the ground. This should help powdery mildew

Thanks for the update Daniel. I have tried my hand at self wicking tubs this year after watching a couple of your videos on the subject. I live in Ontario, Canada so our grossing season has only just started a couple of weeks ago. Already I have noticed how well my new plants are doing only after a couple of weeks. I don't have to do as much watering and the plants really seem to like their environment. My tubs aren't as big as yours, and I just have a small yard to grow in, but so far I am really pleased. Thanks for the great advice, I love to watch your videos and learn new techniques.

Hi Daniel, I really appreciate your information you've shared . The self waking tabs have given me hope that I may still be able to garden. I'm disabled right now and difficult to get clear down to the ground and also difficult to get around. I haven't set any app yet but I'm trying to get the material together and perhaps I can put a few things in this fall. Thanks for sharing this and Leon's videos with us I've learned a lot and have high hopes for the future of me gardening.

This is the same concept I use for growing African violets with the exception of the pot is wicked by nylons from the bottom to the water dish. I can't grow them any other way. I think this is a great concept for folks who struggle and with back issues for the pots could be high enough for no of bending. I am a master gardener and I can see huge promise in this growing method. I think I will try this next year with my gardening because I am a 3 time back surgery recipient that really struggles with gardening now. Thanks for sharing Leon's idea with us.

Great "tub" success so far Daniel....looking good. It's all an effort to see what works best for each grower, depending upon the conditions surrounding, the elements too. May work for many and not so well for others. I personally had huge success from tub growing 20-30 yrs ago here in Central Florida. You are right.....Tubs are just another way to help folks decide what is the best way for them. Also, notice that there are very FEW gardens that are ONLY TUBS which shows that not everything is guaranteed to grow well in a tub..... Doing what works for our own satisfaction is the key. Great vid Daniel, thanks for the share. Ken Orlando, Fl

Half inch pvc pipe fits tight inside the plastic soda bottle, you can fill the bottle with water and stick the pipe in the ground as deep as you want, let the bottles stick in the air, as the dirt gets dry air will go up the pipe in to the bottle and some water will come out, its self watering.

Daniel, my opinion, might not be one that is sought after, but it is free and honest! You grow some of the best looking veggies I've had the honor of seeing. But I believe, your "passion or nitch" can greatly be noticed in your "multitude of greens", and I'm going to go out on a limb here (first one up from ground, lol) and say, you favor growing "greens/juiceables" more than other veggies!? If I'm wrong,..... theennn......., I guess your just a GIFTED GREEN GROWER!! That counts even more so after their GATHERED! Hope you have a great weekend. Tyfs and God bless.

Can you give us an idea of the approximate cost of materials to build one, as well as the 'approximate cost' per container for potting mix and the small amount of fertilizer you put in each for a growing period?? I ask because you can pick up a GardenBox for about $29.95 which includes the wicking container as well as the burlap that covers the top for moister controll and weeds, as well as the fertilizer needed for one season. Thanks for helping us understand the costs so we can compare solutions. ONE THING FOR SURE, no doubt these systems are fantastic for home gardeners. My Garden grow boxes this year grew amazing vegetables. My interest is to see if the method you show is less costly. Thanks. Appreciate your video..

I did three tubs and they have worked really well. Putting them right next to each other was way too close so I’ve had to move them apart. I did two tubs of tomatoes and one with bell peppers. The peppers are doing okay but the tomatoes really took off I had to cage them and they both are now more than 5 feet tall. One plant is yellow cherry tomatoes and I’ve picked and picked tomatoes and it’s still loaded. The other is a beefsteak and I have picked 6 good sized tomatoes and there is still 12 or so on the plant. I plan to add more tubs next year and try more variety of plants. No powdery mildew here. I live in northern Arkansas.

Hey Daniel, I've had problems with that stem rot it comes from the soil and will travel through the air and may have it in the soil in the ground that the high tunnel was set up on. If it was me I would use a copper sulfate mixed in water and drench the soil in the containers. This is considered an organic method. I've had that problem when I had greenhouses. It is very common in the green house. Often on the pots and inserts that we reuse. If you reuse anything in your high tunnels wash those items in hot water and bleach to kill any fungal spores that are present. Well I better get going. Wishing you and yours a healthy happy and prosperous life. Larry

Trim your lower leaves on the squash. Put hay mulch under your plants. It's coming from your soil. It's a big problem in the deep South where we get rain seemingly daily. It won't stop it but it's a good start. That and remove some of the leaves for better air circulation

Per my hubby, an arborist for over 40 years, who also treats shrubs and plants, you don't have enough drainage so you have too much humidity. This may be from your added compost that holds too much moisture. Either move them to a less humid area or reduce the compost in the squash tubs. Maybe you could add the compost deep and top it off with Leon's lighter mix on top.

Very good Vlog. I just wonder how onions would do in those tubs? That Swiss Chard is amazing. It’s. Healthy and you can stir fry it , eat it in salads, or juice it. Daniel I’m impressed with your beets as they are well rooted and want to push themselves out of the soil. I don’t see kale this year and your squash seems to be taking a beating. I love summer squash. Have a blessed day. Dutch’s garden would do better if it was well weeded and he’s been away lately.

The problem with your squash stem is called Oomycete. Its caused by saturation of the soil and/or poor drainage, and it can spread through the air. It's a fungus! Powdery mildew is found mostly on the leaves and the squash itself. It resembles a white powdery substance.
@olegig51665 жыл бұрын
United we Stand is there a solution or treatment for the problem? I have some tubs started but not as far along due to difference in climate. (Growing outside and later freeze date)
@unitedwestand51005 жыл бұрын
@@olegig5166 ,. None that I know of. Here it usually happens at the end of the season so I've never tried to treat it. We usually call it blight, but Oomycete is its scientific name. Sorry. Good soil drainage is the best thing to keep it from occurring. It will affect other plants as well. Like cucumbers and tomatoes.
