A look at another great clock I've never seen before, thanks for the upload 😊

Thanks, These were used in many public buildings, cases were slightly over 12 inches square, quite large clocks.

Fascinating! Last Christmas I cleaned up a self-winding Sunbeam wall clock for my mom. Very interesting little gadget, it looks like a big quartz movement outside except it takes a D battery. Even the NAWCC forum guys were mystified. Luckily it just needed cleaning and oiling. It doesn't use coils like this here, it has a wee motor with a worm turning the mainspring arbor. Re-winds every 8 minutes or so. Thanks for sharing this most interesting movement!

Yea, I know those types, has a brass worm drive motor, newer ones used plastic worm drives. this clock rewinds every hour, uses 3 volts, powered by two 1 1/2 volt batteries the following link shows the back of one: www.prc68.com/I/Images/SWCC_Bat_Adj.jpg

Neat mechanism! Reminds me of a telegraph sounder/relay!

Thanks, Patent date of 1898 is in the telegraph era so same electrical time period. This is a Master Clock that has two added synchronization coils that energize once a day to keep other slave clocks connected to it automatically set to correct time, the Master clock was set to the Navel Observatory Time known by using a Telegraphic Signal.

Just found your channel while off for vacation. Wonderful content. I'm not a hobbyist but would like to be in the future. Lifelong fascination with clocks started with my Grandfather's Ansonia Artic, which he specifically left to me. The ticking of that clock is probably one of the first sounds I ever heard. I'm listening to it now - 62 years later. Doesn't keep time very well anymore, but it runs. I synchronize it every Sunday morning when I wind it. If the house caught fire, after everybody was accounted for, I would grab that clock for sure. Thanks for doing these.

They are very reliable, I don't see to many of them. They used the Navel Observatory Time as their standard, very accurate time piece.

Jim this is Bernie Poole. Hope all is well I’ve been working on a grand father clock it needs. Bushing size is 3.5 mm on od i thought you might know what size to ream the plate. My clock book doesn’t tell me. Any information would be much appreciated happy new year Bernie Poole
@jamesmartin53702 сағат бұрын
A bushing OD of 3.5mm should have a ID hole size of 3.47mm. in the plate. If you are using a standard Bergeon bushing then a Bergon # TR-18B reamer. I fabricate all my own bushings and have found a press fit tolerance of 0.03mm. works well. Breaking the sharp edge of either the hole or bushing helps them get started square. Hope this helps.......

James, that movement looks very dirty, is it in for cleaning and any other service or just inspection.

Clock was operating satisfactory until it stopped winding due to electrical issues. Owner sent it in to troubleshoot and fix electrical issues only, they felt they could deal with the mechanicals.

This one seems very complicated to me. Never seen one like this self winder.
@jamesmartin537021 сағат бұрын
Once you get familiar with them, they are quite basic and trouble free. They were used in a lot of public places, bus and train stations etc...

We're can I get a bushing for a grandfather clock
@jamesmartin537021 сағат бұрын
I fabricate all my own, most any distributor of clock parts and repair material will have pre made bushings, one popular one is TimeSavers

🙋Wow, what voltage does this mechanism operate at?
@jamesmartin537021 сағат бұрын
3 volts DC, clock cases were about 13" wide, very large.
@max.m.887321 сағат бұрын
The coils look so big that it looks like they need at least 110 volts to operate.😊
@jamesmartin537020 сағат бұрын
Originals were large, following link is an image of the setup, they lasted about a year: www.prc68.com/I/Images/SWCC_Bat_Adj.jpg
