I have family in the Bronx, and whenever I visit I always make a point to try and catch some action there. So many Trash cars come in and out of this yard.

While most other roads have retired their Dash-8 fleet, CSX is still using them and keeping them running quite well. Well done CSX!!!!

Remotes, such as the 2445, can be run by the engineer in the unit coupled to the remote; but can't be run by an engineer in a different unit, not connected to 2445. Also please note, units such as the 2455, are often called "Slugs", mainly as the only power they get for their traction motors, comes from the power unit they are attached to. They have no generators. Most commonly, they are a simple box, filled with lots of weight.

+James Finborg To answer your question, CSX was formed when the Chessie System and the Seaboard System Railroad merged together. So the C can stand for "Chessie" and the S can stand for "Seaboard". The X really has no meaning. But the X could be used as a short term for the word "Express" taking off the "E" giving out "Xpress", putting the X in use.

Yeah, they used to call these "Calf" units back in the day... 3:30 I guess they call them "Yard Slugs" now?

A bit late but in case anyone else is wondering: FNGFASHA Productions 1 year ago asked: What was the cargo on the flatcars at 5:00 minute mark? I think they're Nacelles, for wind generators. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nacelle_%28wind_turbine%29

Freight Trains going to Long Island get picked up from Selkirk, and they take as long to go from Selkirk, which is just south of Albany, NY, to Long Island as a train does to go to Chicago from here, such is the bumbling and pathetic state of rail freight along the East Coast and especially around New York city. Trains from the west cost or Midwest must ship through Selkirk to and from Long Island and New York City. This constipation is why semi-trucks haul everything into the City and Long Island and very very little rail freight.

+samedeepwater3 - It used to be a major maintenance facility for the New York Central on it's NYC-Albany-Buffalo-Cleveland-Chicago mainline. The 20th Century Limited ran that route and Selkirk was where they maintained the J4 Hudsons that averaged 60 mph for the 16-hour runs.

Not really. Selkirk Yard opened in 1924 for business with the Castleton Cutoff, with FREIGHTS routed through it from/to B&A & NYC and western connections via West Shore Line, avoiding Albany & West Albany hill. Nothing to do with passenger locos, which were serviced at Croton-Harmon or points west. Twentieth Century Limited took passenger route through Albany. BTDT.

During the merger between Chessie System and Seaboard System back in the 1980s, lawyers for both companies got sick of writing "Chessie System/Seaboard System Merger," so they just started writing "CSX." The name stuck.
