Bad habit of gassing it as kick
@samlwackson8696
@samlwackson8696 Жыл бұрын
Had a bad habit of kicking things 97 times before realizing something’s not right, if it doesn’t fire up in 5-10 kicks, something’s not right. I recently bought a 87 LT 230S, it hadn’t ran in over 15 years, after going through it (carb clean, oil change, valve check) it started on the 2nd kick.

No oil, but gas in the oil tank. And ran it that way! I thought the crank bearings sounded pretty bad when you were kicking it. One thing I know, is that if it’s worth fixing, you’re the guy that can make it happen! Good luck Joe!

The clear ring around the top of the piston is from a coolant leak. Don't sink money into just a new piston and rings. It needs a complete rebuild, especially with metal shavings.
@waffalobill
@waffalobill Жыл бұрын
And that oil ring didn't just vanish. It was taken out or its in the bottom end. And what broke the chain guide/tensioner? Lots of mysteries in this bike. Think the guy he got it off is lying his ass off. He knew how bad it is. He knocked $800 off it without much pressure. Never did find out why a bike with stuck/missing rings, sloppy piston was so hard to kick over. Even if he was weak he was standing on the kick starter. My best estimate he weighs say 140 - 160ish? 😊

Any shavings would have me freaking out. The source must be found. I didn't really see anything looked ground up. I guess it could be rings but first I think he should have checked material. Aluminum or steel. Run a magnet in it. See if it sticks. That's a lot of metal to have pumping around the oil system. The filter only grabs so much . Does it have a bypass? I know a car filter does but I have no clue if bikes and quads do. It's been a long time since I owned one and don't remember. There's a chance whoever rebuilt it last time left all that shit in it I guess. Replaced the cams because they got chewed up. I bet the oil they drained out had a handful of glitter in it.

That clean area around the perimeter of the piston could also from the piston coming in contact with the head. Could be wrong thickness head gasket.

When I was in my late teens, I had a 200x 3 wheeler and 2 of my buddies had the same bikes. One morning we were riding a trail up to four peaks, and my buddy's bike stopped running about a mile from the trucks. When we checked the bike out there was no/very little oil in the motor. We went back to the truck and got a quart to see if we could limp it back to the trucks. Put it in the motor and she fired right up without issue. My buddy never had any issues with that motor and he still has it. Those Japanese bike motors are pretty tough machines. Thanks for the video. Congrats on you and your channel's success.

Love your content man, that bike has had some work done for sure. I have a 2001 yz250f I rebuilt the top end, all new valves cause the center intake valve was so worn it was sharp as a razor blade. 01 don't come stock with hot start lever on the bars it's on the carb as well. The lever is supposed to be compression release. They don't have a decompression exhaust cam. That hole in the cylinder is spark plug hole drain so it doesn't set in water. If you get the bike at compression stroke when kick starting then push down the kick starter one notch and let it come back up, then give it a good kick it should start, that is about the only way to get these bikes fired up lol they are a booger. I do believe that it has a big bore kit cause stock bore is like 78 or 79 mm. You're my hero, though, you do awesome work.

I was thinking.... did you ask the owner if he attempted to "Trade it in??" Fill it with oil and take it to a dealer as a trade in. Initially a $500 trade value, with NO oil, a $300 trade in to $0.... a $300 bike. You've taken a lot of chances in the past. Win some lose some. Let's see what you find! Always great entertainment. Thanks for posting.

Mate of mine bought a bike a while ago and told him everything was completely done professionally. Looked clean. Bike blew up 2 days later pulled the engine completely apart and the inside looked like it was beaten with a hammer and vice marks all over it. Took the parts to the guy and he said he did the rebuild and he’s sorry. But he was being a fuck wit too him. Grabbed the seller by the collar and asked why he shouldn’t beat his head in with the cylinder for lying and being an asshole. Seller apologised and gave him a rebuild kit he had there for his other bike for lying

Definitely lucked out on that one Joe atleast the cylinder is okay & the rod bearing a bike completely dry with no oil is insane but a new piston rings gasket kit & new tentionar guide & possible a stock carburettor unless your happy that the one with it will do the job & Definitely check out the valves & seals make sure there good with a good clean & touch up with paint you'll still end up with a decent bike for the price good to see top mechanic vinny looking over it have a smashing Weekend mate take care bud #2Vintage 👊 💨

I think the piston is touching the head at tdc. The lack of carbon on the edge of the piston crown, the same on the underside of the head, and the difficulty kicking it over all adds up.
@theflyingclutchco.5918
@theflyingclutchco.5918 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking this also, mainly because of how hard it was to kick over. The reason I stopped thinking that was because if it had interference, the valves would’ve been bent, as he kicked it over about 800 times and the previous owner allegedly bump started it (itself, a doubtful proposition.) Didn’t sound like it was leaking through the valves during the leakdown test, the TDC mark appeared to actually close both sets of valves (so it’s not off-time), and the valve clearance was set. It’s possible still, but I’m not sure it’s likely.

Your dog is beautiful, I'm also a doggie fan,I have two Lhasa apso's, very cute and hairy. I noticed your little man rubbing his head on the floor,it's usually because of uncomfortable/itchy ears. Hairy dogs suffer with getting dirty inner ears, usually just a waxy build up often smelly, you usually see if you have a good look and check it's definitely worth it,as it can turn into nasty painful infected ears, they're very delicate dogs ears, worth looking at just incase. Keep up the great content. 🐕👍

Be careful I had an 02 yz250f that would get stuck when kicking it just like that, and the crank ended up being bad, had no up and down play but when rotating it would get stuck randomly. So make sure to check that👍🏼

Why is the compression test still so high with a decompression mechanism? Compression on my 08 crf250r with the decompression mechanism says it should be only 57psi.

Id pull motor and start from there, probably split cases etc Make sure gears are not toast. Valves and all. Been run without oil, may be some damaged gears etc. Great job saving that poor busted beast!

Update on my warrior. Has a top end tick. I adjusted the valves but didn't change anything. Thinking it's the timing chain. But I just replaced the clutch and she rips now!

Awesome! Yeah most likely timing chain if it still has a tick.

Yea, when I adjusted the valves, they were all extremely tight. Like I couldn't fit a .03 gauge in the intake valves. They were tight lol but it picked up power after the adjustment! Also rebuilt the carb. There wasn't any accelerator pump return springs

After watching this video,I'm pretty sure this bike is not a 2001, due to the placement of the frame dipstick, the auto decompression device on the exhaust cam, the oil filler hole on the case itself, and the coil on plug system, did you check the vin to make sure it's actually a 2001? Cuz all of these things are different on my 2001 yz250f

What's the oil in the frame for? I've never seen that. Does it go to the crank case? Or are those 2 separate things?

It's a wet sump system, I own an 03 yz450f and it's the same. You only get a reading on the frame after the bikes been running for likr 2 minutes so it can pump the oil up there. They only take 1.2 quarts w/filter change also

Also you added too much oil now without draining the old out of the bottom of the case. Oil isn't stored in the frame until running, and only when running

46:29 if that engine's been rebuilt I wonder if somebody took the oil ring and split it apart so they can get it in a piston. But I ain't never seen no effed up like this. The second it was extremely hard to kick over I would have walked away

On the 2001 and 2002 yz250fs that lever on the bars isn’t the hot start it’s the decompression lever in 03 the went to an auto decomp cam but on the 01 and 02’s if you don’t bump it past top dead center with that decomp lever it’s about impossible to kick it over
