What do you if you busy drawing commissions? I am also shy and will try my best to chat with people on my first Comic Con Africa as an exhibitor. Scary but exciting.
@walterostlie5 жыл бұрын
When you are doing commissions, just keep an eye on open towards the front of your table, when you see people walking by, just look up and say hello. You can also take breaks while drawing to talk to people for a little bit, then go back to drawing. Depending on how quickly you have to finish. I like to just take my commissions back to the hotel and draw them at night and the morning and tell people to pick them up the next or last day.

It helps to bring a fatigue matt for standing on. Makes it easier for the feet. Eventually, though, i myself need to sit and rest my legs, but I still keep my head up and make eye contact. If someone approaches my table, I make sure to engage. Mostly keeping the conversation about them. "Hi, how are you? Enjoying the con? Love your cosplay! What do you look for while here? What are you into?" Then I slowly lead them into the stuff that they're looking at on in my table.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the informative videos :) even though I probably won't sell anything on cons in the near future, it is really interesting to get a look behind the curtains, so to say. I'm working on my own webtoon right now, so your comic videos are really helpful to me. Even though as of yet I don't plan to pursue this as a career but more as a way to explore different ways and possibilities to express my art and get stories out of my head :)

That is exactly how I started. I just wanted to tell stories with the characters in my head. I don't know how all this other crap happened ;-)

thank you for all your work!! i only found your artist alley series now for some reason, although i follow your channel for quite some time now. as a fellow introvert i know the struggle, conventions really drain me T-T so thanks for the tips for conversation starters! also idk if this is still helpful after two years at this point but i could imagine that putting only the pitch text of your comic on a slightly smaller sign with an arrow pointing down at the copy might work a bit better, after all you already have the cover art of the copy that is speaking for your art, the only needed info is the story pitch. plus that way you and your banner are also more visible & it feels less stuffed, right now it looks a lot like part of the cover than like a description meant to be read

I've always wanted to set up at a artist alley one day but have been waaaaaaaay to nervous to do it. Thanks for the video dude, I actually feel a bit better about getting out of my comfort zone a bit.

It's fun meeting other creators. It is tough, but does get easier and easier. Maybe we'll get some conventions back at the end of next year.

hey man, thanks for making these types of videos. theyre really helpful for someone trying to start getting into self promotion. Was wondering if you could share where you go for pins and prints for your kick starter perks.
@walterostlie5 жыл бұрын
I used made by cooper for my pins. For prints I just print at home using an Epson r1800 and photo paper. But I don't point very much. Check out Vista print, over night prints, or RA direct. Or even find a local printer in your area using google, you can get good deals locally.

I am really enjoying these videos. Pitching I think is always one of the hardest things to do. I at the ever least my eye contact and say hello. Not everyone i say hello to will even come over but I like to be at least friendly to anyone walking by.. I also been to tables asking d about the books/art and they barely acknowledge that i am there. At that point I say thank you and leave. Are you going to make a video on what you use email lists for? Because i never though of using one because I don't think I have enough to put out into email. Do you do them frequently? when do you know to put one out? Are they very helpful?
@walterostlie5 жыл бұрын
I don't use them very often and I don't have much luck with them. However I do ignore my email list and should really send more often. Some schools of thought say weekly emails. I also don't know what I would say on a weekly basis....but here I am making weekly videos, so guess you don't know till you try.
@Backofthecomicshop5 жыл бұрын
@@walterostlie well I guess for you since you are doing weekly videos maybe emails about that? Or maybe at the very least one to let people Lol how you are doing them.

I don't have any that I go to all the time, usually just what pops up and makes sense. But I do take any chance I can to go to MegaCon Orlando, Heroes Con Charlotte, NYCC, ECCC. I will be at Dragon Con for the first time in August. Most of the other ones I do tend to be in Florida where I live. Getting out of Florida takes a long time.
