I just want to thank you for all your videos and your a very interesting man and operation. I raised bees 35 years ago and got away from it when I started my own business and I had to work 6 and 7 days a week to keep up with the work. A year ago I got injured at work from a company that was lifting a large part off the machine they were working on and something went bad and I got crushed so I’ve had all year to watch bee videos and I have gotten some Bees this year that I was able to trap so I’m back in the bees and enjoying every minute Thanks again and keep up the great work.

Back when i roughnecked on land drilling rigs, contract companies put down boards on the locations where holes were drilled. That enabled heavy equipment to roll in & out w\o bogging down. I think they put down maybe gravel then plastic sheets or polymer then layered oak boards so as to create a pad. They nailed them together w long 60 penny nails.

That 'brood smell' phenomenon applies to everything. Smell an apartment block of humans in different countries, every people of different regions smell utterly different when they hit critical stank, same with animals, a few cats, mice, dogs, or birds have a certain odour, but pack a bunch more in and the smell changes entirely. I've never thought anyone else specifically noted that brood smell before, I'm glad I'm not mad.

My name is Randy Thompson I’m from central California and I run approximately 500 colonies and I’m trying to expand a bit larger and over more country and begin to run bees outside the state. I’ve been beekeeping on my own for about ten years now but actually working and helping other beekeepers for about 30 years and I’ve never lost interest in bees from day one they are amazing and the business itself is challenging most the time when you think you have it all figured out is when something else or another insect or pest we have to deal with I’ve wanted to give up several times but figured anybody can quit and that’s the easy but I keep my head up and fight through it and I still wake up and try my best to be positive and put in the hard work and I will succeed in his business thanks again I am very great full to have came across your channel I learn every time I watch a new vid .

Do bees from the south east over winter well in places like Oregon, even though the climate is so different?
@bobbinnie98724 жыл бұрын
It depends on the genetics. The golden Italian bee that is so prevalent in south Georgia does best in the south. Those that bring in genetics from outside the area, and there are many, do better in locations like yours and mine. Where we're at in the southern Appalachians the temperatures are not that much different than parts of Oregon and the Carniolans we use do well.

Hi Bob, next year I will be a 3rd year beekeeper. I expanded from three hives to twenty this year. I want to focus on honey production and maybe selling fall nucs. Would I be better off to split mid March and raise extra colonies for honey production or use a double screen board to split and then remove it after the flow starts? Also, I’m located in Clarkesville. Do you know on average how much honey each colony produces (any kind of range would be great). I’m trying to get a gauge for what kind extractor I will need. My three frame isn’t going to cut it! Since I’ve written so much anyways, I’ll go ahead and ask about how much sourwood would be average per colony in the Otto/franklin area? My uncle lives there and I have the opportunity to chase it next year. Thanks so much!
@bobbinnie98724 жыл бұрын
For starters, if you are splitting in mid March and raising your own queens in Clarkesville, GA that's too early for good mating in many years. I have had a number of yards just north of you in the Hollywood and Turnerville area for 25 years and that has been my experience. It would be best to wait for at least two more weeks, three would be better for the very best results. That's what the bees do. If you're using mated queens from south Georgia that is still to early for quality queens (my opinion). Florida queens will be properly mated by that time and would be a better choice for that time frame. Queens pushed to early experience high failure and supersedure rates. When we make splits in mid March (with Florida queens) we like to use double screen divider boards over a good colony so the nuc can benefit from the additional warmth and progress easier and quicker. After the first of April we begin using nuc boxes or single deeps for splitting into. We have many yards around Otto, NC and some years they do very well on sourwood and some years not. The potential is greater there than in Habersham County but the weather doesn't always cooperate. There's generally more rain near Otto. This year we did well in both areas, probably averaging 80 pounds each with some colonies making over 100.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I’ve watched all of your videos multiple times and really enjoy the content. Thank you for bestowing your knowledge-you’re a wonderful educator. I am assembling a list of concise questions for you in the event that I catch you at your store! My intent was to raise some of my own queens and purchase about 5-10 from you to increase genetic diversity. I will be happy to wait until later to split, I just don’t want a repeat of what happened to me this year, which is all of my hives continuously tried to swarm and that’s why I ended up with twenty. It was through your content that I learned about reaching peak population after the nectar flow, though I learned too late :P. My goal is to operate about 50 hives for a couple of years, (perhaps 25 honey producers and 25 singles to continuously split for nuc sales), and then judge as to whether I’d be able to go full time with it or not. It seems as though next year will be a leap of faith and investment for me in extracting equipment and honey supers. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a return on investment. I’ll be looking forward to more content and seeing you at the store! Thanks again Bob. Best wishes!

Ha Bob I gust love your videos u share your heart and it is great. I do not think I will ever make money off my bees. I have 27 hives I had 30 but the queens failed and I combined the hives I just sell the honey right now. I had a couple of people wanted to buy bees from me, but I did not want to sell them any they buy bees every year, they dont treat and they had bees and they all die because they do not take care of them they do not feed they do nothing for them, and they die. One man started bee keeping the same time I did in 2014 every year he gets bees and every year they die. i know this sounds crazy but I love my bees and I dont want to sell them to some one that wont take care of them I dont want them to die. I really care about them and I want to do what ever it takes to be a good beekeeper. I enjoy it they are great. I work a full time job and cut grass in the evening and bee keep on the weekends and inbetween the yards, so I stay busy. and it is just me and I am 62 so this old woman needs to get it in her head that I do not need to encrease the apairy I was spending a lot of money on queens every year to encrease the apairy I also have 11 different places I have my bees in this city, to spread them out, but maybe because u have tought me about the divider board maybe I will be able to make my own queens I am going to try next year and keep that money in my pocket. U are right some times u get queens and they are no good. I just got some from CA 2 months old and they failed so I combined them. Lots of rain has made the bee yard muddy and hard to navigate. He's had a big rig stuck in the mud before and that is no fun. He's got 450 hives or so going to a buyer in Colorado. The buyer will overwinter down in Arizona in preparation for the almond harvest come Spring. Bob thinks it is a good strategy. He used to do it, but simply desires to raise bees now. It allows him to travel less. He likes honey, too, but not as much as raising bees and selling nucs/packages, etc. He's able to keep his full time employees by having them prepare new equipment over winter. They used to go down south and work a bee yard there but he doesn't want to mess with that anymore. He is also able to cycle out his equipment this way. He tries to diversify income, building things. When he looks as some of these boxes, it brings back memories. Some of them remind him of his teenage sons helping him put them together 20 years ago. And there is the gist of the audio.

I found that out my first year and never looked back. Now I sell locally raised queens, overwintered nucs and spring splits on a small scale and the honey is sold out the front door or I make it into a fermented beverage with green tea, a scoby and honey - called Jun. It is so satisfying to raise more bees - biggest problem is parting with them. Feels like I'm selling off my children! My second bee passion is educating the new beekeeper.

I've sold bees to people in many states but they have to pick up here. I don't think beekeepers from Kentucky would have a problem but that is a question for your state bee inspector.

I'd rather NOT have to send bees to the Orchards but Honey prices are BS when it comes to barreling and selling the stuff. The pricks at Sioux and barkman is a joke on prices. A guy can barely make a living on this profession anymore.
