In 2020, we converted a retired ambulance into a tiny home on wheels. Since then, we've done full time van life for nearly 3 years, and in this week's video, we're selling our van.
And that was harder than expected.

The reason you didn't pass the safety inspection is because with that misfire, you are not passing emissions and polluting the atmosphere and causing smog in the big cities. In the U.S.A., many of our states with the big cities, you have to pass a yearly emissions test at the mechanic in order to get it licensed. If it is too expensive to get it licensed, many times the owners will sell it to someone in one of the states that does not have emissions testing requirements. Hope this helps in the future.

We ended up getting safetied no problem as soon as we got a mechanic who had time to work on it. It’s not that we’re not passing emissions, it’s that the check engine light is on and they can’t safety a vehicle with the check engine light on. But you’ll see that they did repairs and managed to get it off :) we just passed two safety exams in 9 months! One in Ontario and one in BC ☺️

I bought a decommissioned ambulance and it was hell getting somebody to inspect it. Same thing they kept telling me weigh. It took a while and I found a shop who told me I was just getting a run around that as long as it is under 18,000 lbs it’s a normal inspection. This was NY.

I know that dealership, I was walking by and I saw all the ambo's and thought yeah! I'll take mine here for any repairs it might need. After going in and checking that they would work on a conversion I ended up calling them a few weeks later for an appointment to fix something... I can't remember what it was...it's had a FEW issues!! The guy on the phone said there was a wait as they had to work on 3 or 4 ambulances first and to call back in a few days. I did and he said the same thing. I tried one more time and he was really rude and just blew me off saying something like " we're just too busy to help you" WTF!! It had already been over a week I was pissed and said if they never intended to work on it in the first place why the hell waste my time and make me drive a vehicle that needed a repair. He was really rude and I just hung up. Now I need to finish watching your vid to see how it ended up!!!

I bet it was the same guy you were working with because everyone else was super nice and he just seemed to have no interest in helping us. The guys at Whites were super nice and we ended up getting it repaired at Hastings Auto and Truck where they actually seemed like they knew what they were doing (even though we had a high bill)

Is the engine a Duramax diesel? I had a Mack semi truck engine rebuilt labor and parts was less than 13 grand. That was the going rate 15 years ago. Happy you got your problems resolved.

This is why I despise dealerships, they’ll charge you way more than what the work is worth. Most of “mechanics” are also clueless, I’d much rather take my car to a local mechanic

I couldnt quite make out what you had said at about 9:39. Something about a valve burn? Curious what issue it might have had?

Yes we had a valve burn in the fourth cylinder for the last year! Every mechanic we had ever gone to (4 mechanics now) all told us they COULD fix it, but that it would cost us around 3k-5k to fix and that it was basically a non-issue. Every mechanic we had been to advised us that it wasn’t really a necessary fix until the problem gets worse because then it would probably be time for a rebuild. But that probably won’t be for a few years.
