Selmer Super Session H vs Selmer S80 F | Soprano Mouthpiece Comparison

Here is a little comparison between the Selmer Super Session H and a Selmer S80 F. Let me know in the comments which is your favourite and why.

Super session sounds more open to me, i prefer that

The first one definitely has a more round and full sound. Second sounds more bright and even nasal. Both are great.

I'm still using the S80 F. I like the way it sounds and the intonation is good.

It seems to me you have better control and more stable sound with the Super Session.

I felt the exact opposite when I tried them. The S80 was more even across the range and I was more confident while playing it. That proves it's always best to try a mouthpiece before you buy it because it might sound good but feel wrong at the same time if that make sense.

Both sound good. They sound So close I wonder if your concept of your sound is being projected through both mouthpieces. I always wonder, how can a mouthpiece help me make the sound I want to create, so I wonder the differences you notice when you play them, How do they project into the room, which is influenced by the angle of the baffle, (but using a mic kinda negates this). How stable are they in the high range and low range, is there resistance or they free blowing. Does the mouthpiece make it easy to create dark or bright tones? What is the tip opening, and what reed and strength worked for you.

I prefered the S80. It was easier to play and had a better response. More even across the whole range as well. Clear winner for me.

If it does not destroy your embouchure, The Super Session H. I have one but it is too hard for me to control. I have a custom made mouthpiece from SYOS that is perfect for me because it fits my physiognomy and therefore makes it easy to achieve same big sound as on the Selmer Super Session.

Super Session was a bit too much work for me so I decided to keep things simple with S80.

S80F, super session maybe if a person was fusion all day etc. But S80 is better balanced.

I'm wondering about the Légère reeds on SelmerSopranosax. I have that standard Selmer mouthpiece S80 F, and have 2,5 Légère reed, which seems to light…I don't know…(VanDoren 3,5 seems better…)..? Does it make sense to buy a more heavy Légère…? Or may be a another (some wider) mouthpiece?

I have an older S80 F and use a D'addario Jazz Select 3 Soft Unfiled reeds with it. Recent models have smaller tip openings so it might be a good idea to try some harder reeds. Not a big fan of synthetics though.

I am a beginner but I like the SPSS because it opens up a hard to play instrument. I agree the S80 sounds more even here, but the SPSS plays the upper register better. The S80 is much more affordable.

Super Session was harder to control and not as even so I kept the S80 and still using it.

The best option is to try all sizes and pick the one that you like the most. If you are new to soprano I would start with 4c or 5c and a hard reed. It should be easier to keep your soprano more in tune with one of these.

S80 or S90? Have you ever compared them?

Didn't had a chance to try S90. My current favourite is a stock Yanagisawa 5 as it makes the soprano intonation much more stable.

You can try even harder reeds or go with a bigger tip opening. Pretty obvious advise but it's hard to tell anything else without knowing your playing.
