@@Ryuu44 Hi, OP here. I did mean the heliocentric struggle elements of the history of astronomy. I know that the show isn't likely going to have specific real people or exact events drawn directly from history verbatim, just like nearly all other fictional shows about periods of history. I apologize for not being precise in my initial comment and causing unanticipated confusion.🙂

In Japanese, the word for "heliocentrism" literally means "earth move explanation", which makes Hubert's monologue more impactful when he basically goes, "The Earth moves. Therefore, I will call it the earth-move-explanation."

1:55 Following the line "What must one offer up" is the main title "チ" (chi). The チ here can be 血 (chi/blood), 知 (chi/knowledge), or 地 (chi/the earth), but with the English title "The Orb" you wouldn't be able to see what this sequence implies. This lost-in-translation problem becomes more evident after episode 10-11 -- the original Japanese titles of which are "知" (chi/knowledge) and "血" (chi/blood), respectively. The final episode will most likely be titled "地" (chi/earth).

Orb is such a fantastic work of fiction. We often take for granted all the fundamental knowledge we aquired through centuries of scientific research like "Well, of course Earth is spherical, DUH." without consediration what it took to get here. But proving hailocentrism without ability to physically go there and see it, is infinitely more challenging that studying curvature of the Earth.

I watched this anime blind after seeing some buzz around it and found it very impressive. It is a theme certainly for the more mature audience I don't know much about the historical accounts but knowing how religion is with its own history, it is, to put it bluntly, nice to see this interpretation. Scientists are still searching for a "beautiful" explanation for the universe, a "theory of everything". From wikipedia: "At present, there is no candidate theory of everything that includes the standard model of particle physics and general relativity and that, at the same time, is able to calculate the fine-structure constant or the mass of the electron."

Side note: I was sure I heard Ayumu Murase's voice, but no. The VA for Rafal is Sakamoto Maaya, who also voiced Akito in Fruits Basket and Francois in Dr Stone, among many others. And of course Kenjiro Tsuda is voicing the Church's torturer/interrogator.

原作者、魚豊先生のインタビューでの発言「地動説」は「現実と虚構の狭間」「地動説」は、一般的に語られるようなガリレオ裁判的迫害はなくて。それ自体がウソで、世界を勘違いしている実例です。「天動説」も世界の勘違いの一種ですが、そこには人文科学と自然科学との"勘違い"の差が現れてます。その差とは、“物語があるかどうか”というものです。では何故、自然科学である筈の地動説には単に数学的記述の差異だけでなく、あらゆる種類の物語が後世に付随したのか？起こった事と、起こらなかった事、そのギャップを架橋する所に物語が立ち現れます。裏を返せば、語り直されることによって、印象が更新される。この観点は陰謀論にもつながりますが、創作や漫画を描く人間として、その作用にとても興味がありました。

In the Ptolemaic theological explanation it was that sins are common on earth because it was the lowest of God's creation, as far away as possible from the heavens. Cosmology was used to give rationality to faith, or rather, scientific research passed through a religious filter to be declared legitimate, otherwise they would be heresies.
