two things one of them is something that I say with and about every episode. First and foremost this series is a master class in making a person reconsider everything they thought they knew. And I love it so much! Secondly: Here is a truth about the shadow clan: it is stated earlier in the series that they are at their strongest in darkness and seeing as we have that beautiful storm cloud providing plenty of obscuring darkness.

If you guys got emotional now you should prepare for the next episode. The story of young Miranjo from this point onwards gets truly horrifying

So, the Gyakuza Kingdom... plenty of ink has been spilled on Japan's unfortunate history of casting certain cultures as inferior/untrustworthy/requiring rule by more enlightened peoples (ex. the basis of blood type personality thing and apologetics of the colonial period of Japan's history.) There are people who look at Gyakuza and are like "this is clearly a caricature of real world groups and is backwards" and people who say "it's not that deep bro, you're seeing something that isn't there or was completely unintentional." Wherever you land on it, it is disappointing that a show that has taken so much time to make all the character's come off as protagonists of their own stories with conflicting desires and ideals just throws up their hands and says "here is the kingdom of assholes, they are jerks because that is who they are."

I think the biased storytelling is intentional, it shows that Bosse is unreliable as a narrator. It could also give insight into how he views the people who murdered Miranjo's mom and disfigured Miranjo herself so severely.

@@peggedyourdad9560 So show them from someone else's perspective or something. They've managed to do the 'not as evil' for every other thing by showing an alternative perspective. But we see no attempt here, just kingdom of assholes.

I actually stopped reading the manga at this point. For a work that spends so much time giving villains sympathetic backstories and hands out redemptions like free candy to even the worst people, the fact that an entire nation, an entire culture of people, is written off as just evil people that deserved to be genocided, leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Because it comes off as one of two possibilities: Either Bosse is lying and he genocided an entire nation for entirely personal grudges, meaning, together with his other actions, he is irredeemably evil, or the Gyakuza are actually completely evil, meaning the author is a lazy hack, or worse, an Imperialist sympathizer. Even a fair portion of the Japanese audience picked up on the Korean colonization dogwhistles when the manga got to that point, which is pretty telling. For those familiar with Japanese nationalism/history of colonization, Ranking of Kings uses a lot of the same talking points trying to justify/revise their colonization of Korea, enough that it can definitely be considered intentional. I suppose since the manga isn't done yet it remains to be seen whether the author is trying to criticize the colonization or is actually wholly for it, but until that's made clear I'm steering clear of it for now.

Yeah, this is like the one part of the series I don't like. Even ignoring how iffy the story of "There was a country full of bad people and when we helped them they took advantage of us because they're all inherently bad", it's just bad writing imo. One of the things I liked the most about this show was how human everyone felt, even the people who did bad things weren't necessarily bad people. So that whole part of Miranjos backstory I don't really like.
