South Africa had laws that put black people (the majority) in poverty. They weren't really allowed to go to university. It was illegal for them to start businesses. Many areas had no schools in an effort to keep the majority in poverty. If so many comments are opposed to equity laws then how to they imagine the majority gets out of poverty or would they want the status quo to remain? The majority is starting from scratch. Those that go to university largely go through the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) & they become the first from their families to do so and the burden is on them to take care of the rest of the family and even build the first brick home for the family. I'm fascinated to see so many comments from people whose families had hundreds of years of a head start complaining about equity laws that aim to get people whose poverty was designed by unjust laws into a place where they can at least have some crumbs.

Your statement is correct that under an evil white supremacist government and scoiety, people of colour were systemattically treated horribly in general and deprived of many opportunities. As a Christian and White south african, I completely denounce that thinking and history. However, with that said, South Africa has been rapidly dying economically due to consistant pilaging and corruption from the ever ruling black ANC since Mandela. The ANC is known for its extereme incompetence and corruption, as well as marxism that is strangling the economy and will kill it like every other marxist country in the world. BEEE is NOT the answer, by forcing into work, university, media, sport and all aspects of life, this sterile quota that dismisses skill, merit, experience and talent. You can force black people into evey position but when the companies collapse or are less competitive, those black people end up poor anyway. The answer is for the government to provide free/subsidised training at college/university level for more students as well as government backed work opportunities for the poor, regardless of skin colour and family background. Additionally crime must be severly punished and brought under control to incentivise international investment. South Africa is has lost Billions of rands in lost tax revenue, due to educated and wealthy families of all colours leaving because of crime, lack of oppoprtunities and failing economy including myself and my family. Any sensible perosn can see South Africa is on the wronf track through the ANC and its failing policies. South Africa will collapse under the ANC or even worse the EFF. Change to better government, treat everyone equal, incentivise small businesses and back those that work hard. That is the way forward.

There are many successful white-owned businesses in South Africa despite BEE. I find it puzzling that he points to this as the main reason for his struggles. If that's the case, his business may not have been sustainable enough to withstand the pressures of BEE. Another possible reason for his departure is that many of his family members lived outside of South Africa, so he was always considering his options elsewhere instead of focusing on making his business thrive. BEE hasn't significantly benefited black-owned businesses either, so not much has changed. It's even harder for a South African, whether white or black, to start a business and succeed in Europe. South African expats often compare the country's problems to East and West Africa. However, they should try living there to truly understand the differences. I believe that only a small percentage of those who moved from South Africa to Europe are doing exceptionally well; life is tough out there. South Africa has many challenges, but I don't have the option to start anew in another country. Compared to other countries on the continent, we're still doing relatively well.

The cost of living has skyrocketed disproportionately in Cape Town compared to Gauteng. Property prices are now literally double that of property prices in Pretoria (where I live). Gauteng offers more in terms of work opportunities and cost of living.

Unfortunately BEE is a real problem in SA, its backward, ineffective, discriminatory, counterproductive. We live in CT, our sons have EU passports, they left to study in Netherlands with the plan to stay in EU and work/live, but they didn't like it and came back home, now they work in our family business which is thriving and they are super happy. Home is always home, and I can see why you returned to the UK.

I'm a South African from the Xhosa tribe(black) and I completely agree with you on BEE, it has been the single most destructive thing to our economy since it became law more than a decade ago. Our currency fell significantly since BEE(hasn't recovered) and our economic growth fell completely since BEE(hasn't recovered either.) We have an evil leftist government that's our problem in the Republic of South Africa, but we'll fix it and we will get that ANC party out of our government completely.

@@xpressivemusic4578 As a white South African, who grew up after Apartheid. My career choices were always under the lens of BEE, not wanting to choose a path where I would be discriminated against. I therefore chose to work for myself, as it appears have many other white South Africans. This in turn has resulted in the mean income among white males increasing over all demographics. As a result of pressure. I would argue that BEE has been counter productive, only really helping those black people who already came from stable homes, and those who were politically connected. And that grants discourage people from working, and are designed to keep people in poverty. Like the bread in the circus’ of Roman times.

@xpressivemusic4578 it has already been done. The problem is the increase of population from 10mil to 40mil and increasing. How in the world do you want to justify limiting the 2mil working band creating their own business while more than 10mil majority has most of the work in SA. You still blaming apartheid after 30 years and most retail, government, manufacturing, service jobs have already been transferred is laughable. Take responsibility for the population increase without job creation and stop your racism.

Basically you are saying there is less opportunity for anyone who is not Black African because of BEE. It seems Cape Town that is DA goverend has balance as opposed to the other areas, majority ANC, that have faiIed miserably in governance and providing service. The problem in SA that chases people away is that the majority of the people are still fighting for liberation which they were given 30 + years ago. The sad reality is that liberation does not equate to service delivery and equality it just creates a change of leadership more likely incompetent to govern because it does not represent all cultures. The people still need to mature and realise the fight is over, power has little value and what is important is change of policies that promote economic development, job creation etc with equity for all and not some and until we have a government that is not corrupt and cadre driven that appoints competent people to lead SA will loose the very people who will grow the economy and provide in moreways than one for others and especially the poor.
