Please turn off "Stable Volume" in the video playback setting (the first menu item after clicking the gear icon) as for some reason, this new KZbin playback feature made the video much noisier than usual.

Question? This is reference to your Not another Curve Tracer. I found that you can use a cd4060be ic chip and a CD4024be and the R2R resistor ladder to build a Stair Step Generator circuit. Thanks for your input.

With the "flipped" configuration, could you not use a reverse saw-tooth wave form to flip the image back?

IV just started learning electronics. And I often wonder what "old-timers" (I'd be an old-timer myself, but you know what I mean) must think about how good (and cheap plus easy excess able) that goods has become these days. And speaking from experience now is a great time to get into electronics because of the amount of videos to learn from.. been absolutely terrible at math held me back from even trying as a kid, but once I started 5/6 years back maths started making perfect sense to me.. so I feel I missed out and am making up for it now.. I bet you have seen some changes over the years 👍😊🇮🇪

Kerry quick question? With the Curve Tracer you built. What was the total output of the Triangle Generator circuit? And how much current could the circuit deliver?

Man, I've made myself a simple curve tracer circuit using a 555 timer, a dual op amp LM358, a single op amp UA741 and a couple PNP and NPN transistors, I have a current mirror using two PNP transistors so I can use the mirrored signal to connect the second scope probe to for measuring the current through the DUT. So, I have a fast square wave coming out the 555 timer and a slower square wave that I get from one side of the dual op amp which I'm using to reset the 555 timer via a NPN transistor and at the same time I have another NPN transistor that I use together with a capacitor and the second op amp to create a stairstep wave that I use to drive the base of the DUT, the collector from the DUT goes to probe one of the scope [Y] and through the current mirror to scope probe two [X]. The circuit works and I see the scope doing its best to show me something that looks a bit like a curve tracer, but something is off and I don't know what exactly and now that I watched this video hearing you talk about the problem we can have that we can't flip the wave or something like that, I'll have to watch it again because I don't understand that particular part, I can't visualize it in my brain before me as I have to be able to do for me to understand what's happening. It's the way I learn and remember it for the rest of my life. I'm making a video about it and I'll upload it here to KZbin as soon as I can, maybe when you see the curve tracer signal on my scope you can tell me what's going wrong, at least that's what I hope.

I built a V/I curve tracer a while back (www.kerrywong.com/2013/09/02/yet-another-semiconductor-vi-curve-tracer/) and the results were pretty decent (www.kerrywong.com/2013/09/09/yet-another-semiconductor-vi-curve-tracer-ii/).

@@KerryWongBlog I watched the video about it which is this video here. The thing is that I'm learning to do it all analog and I have it working, kind of working I think. It's just that I never made anything like this and I don't have a lot of experience with my oscilloscope that's also new for me so I'm not sure that the curve tracer is showing what it supposed to show or not. And I have a digital scope which makes the X/Y trace behave different when compared to an analog scope, especially with this particular mode. All that is complicating things for me figuring this out but I have to work with what I got and I believe when I have it working great and made it completely analog that I have a better understanding how it all works. Which makes it easier for me in the future when I start another project.

Not sure if I understood the question. But I had built a curve tracer long time ago: www.kerrywong.com/2013/09/02/yet-another-semiconductor-vi-curve-tracer/ www.kerrywong.com/2013/09/09/yet-another-semiconductor-vi-curve-tracer-ii/ you can hook it up to an oscilloscope.

On your article Yet Another Curve Tracer article. What frequency did you run the Triangle Generator Circuit at? I calculated it out to be about 288 hertz. One over time.
@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's about a couple hundred Hertz. The actual frequency doesn't matter that much. Because the triangular waveform and the staircase signal are essentially free running and not synchronized, I chose a frequency so that the traced curve can be refreshed at a reasonable rate on the scope.

It's 2V peak-to-peak and it's bi-polar. so if you are measuring against ground then yes 1V is what you should be expecting.

Nice video. Whether The Staircase wave form for base current and SAWTOOTH wave should be independent or synchronized? Another point is whether I can use Digital Storage Oscilloscope for this experiment to get the curves? Please. Thanks and Regards
@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog Жыл бұрын
These are two independent signal sources so they are not synchronized. In theory DSOs can plot in XY mode as well but a lot of the cheap ones have very limited refresh rates in XY mode so it may not work well. You will have to try it with your scope.

Hi Kerry, new subscriber here. I very much enjoyed this video and look forward to watching more. I’ve been very interested in semiconductor characteristic curves for as long as I can remember. I find transistors (and other amplification mechanisms) fascinating. With all this talk about the characteristic curves of BJT however, the one important question that i haven’t seen addressed is: now that you have your curves, HOW DO YOU USE THEM? Would it be possible for you to do a follow-up video where you set up various scenarios (problems) and a box of different transistors and explain how the IV (and other) curves can be used in a real-world scenario?
@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog 3 жыл бұрын
Much appreciated! Curve tracing is mainly used for analog transistor circuit designs (e.g. for setting the biasing point or Q point, figuring out the dynamic ranges etc). If there is enough interests in this topic I will do a video on it.

@@KerryWongBlog sounds good. I’m just trying to find an easy(ier) way to get a transistor to do what I want without having to do all the tedious calculations. And also trying to understand when exactly transistors with differing characteristics are used and for what applications. I can think of three (switching, audio, and RF) specialization, but even within those specializations there seem to be many transistors to choose from.
@aerofart
@aerofart 2 жыл бұрын
@Ralph Reilly not trolling, just very eccentric. I have always marveled at electronics, not simply for what they do, but for the underlying science behind it all - it's fascinating to know how things of this world behave, even moreso knowing why!
