This chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into semiconductors, insulators and conductors. It explains the difference between an N-type semiconductor a P-type semiconductor. Conductors are metals like copper and silver which conduct electricity very well. Insulators are nonmetals like rubber or glass do not conduct electricity. Semiconductors are metalloids such as silicon and germanium which can conductor a small amount of electricity. The conductivity increases with temperature for semiconductors. For metals, the conductivity decreases with increasing temperature. Metals conduct electricity due to free flowing electrons. In an N-type semiconductor, the charge carriers are electrons. In a P-type semiconductor, the charge carriers are holes which are electron vacancies. An N-type semiconductor can be made by doping silicon with phosphorus which is has one more valence electron than silicon. A P-type semiconductor can be made by doping silicon with Aluminum which has one less valence electron than silicon.

Omg what a life saver! My professor and textbook both just showed a bunch of holes and dots and I had no idea what they were talking about til now. You're the reason I passed chemistry with an A. Every time I need help, I look for your videos first and it's usually all I need.

I finally got it! The reason why voltage increases during winter and not during summer is because metals such as copper or alluminum, when used as conductors/cables in a photovoltaic system, have a higher conductivity at colder temperatures. That is the reason why in winter some pv systems, when having wires not properly designed with a suitable size, explode because of the low temperatures that make more voltage flow thorugh the copper conductors leading to a voltage overload in the inverters. Excelent video!

@@vintoncerf7562 lmfaooo I agree so damn hard on this one, it's the same in Med-school too. I love physics and I'm recently into semiconductors, so I'm trying to learn everything from the basics in my free time. But besides that, I still have to self-teach (via KZbin videos or online sources) though my med school is regarded as one of the best in the country. This trend would never end it seems

@@rutomeds I studied electrical engineering for 6 years Bachelors and then masters. I can firmly say to you that I did not learn a single piece of sh*t from professors. All I know right now comes from my own studies through youtube or internet, or through my practical projects that I built myself

The explanation about N-Type semiconductors is much clearer than my lecturer's. My lecturer tends to overcomplicate things and comes across as a bit pretentious. He seems to be from a privileged background where things were handed to him easily.
