I have to disagree and although I do not condone politicians doing illegal acts 20 yrs without parole is basically a capital murder charge. The disgrace of it all is enough to put politicians in check and whether this is a 1st time offense should also come into play. At the end of the day this is a white collar crime and politicians dont want to go to jail and lose their "status". So giving them like a 5-10yr sentence along with hefty fines and of course firing them should be enough to discourage others from doing this type of criminal behavior.

James Madison even wrote about it in one of the Federalist papers. One of the points being that a more experienced, or longer serving member, will be of better service to the country. Another concern was that corruption could seep in. But that same argument is also used both for and against term limits today, just as it was back then. One other point to consider is that the Founding Fathers did not include term limits into the Constitution. Some wanted it included, others didn't, and in the end, it wasn't included. That indicates to me that that argument against them was of greater importance.
