Sen. Paul Thurmond Discusses Racial Justice

Paul Thurmond, Republican state senator from South Carolina, spoke during worship service at Charity Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston on 7/12/15. He was the guest of the church's pastor, Rev. Nelson Rivers, who was inspired to invite him to service after seeing Thurmond's speech from the Senate floor in favor of removing the Confederate flag from the SC Capitol building.
This was my first time visiting the church. I only found out that the senator would be there when, just before the service began, one of the church ushers asked me if I was Strom Thurmond's son. That made me chuckle. Apparently Thurmond was running a little late, and they were searching for him.
Paul is the son of the late Strom Thurmond, who served 48 years in the U.S. Senate and was a leading segregationist. Like his father, Paul is a Republican.
The local ABC News station was there to cover Thurmond's visit. They shared his comment that, "And as time has gone by, it becomes apparent that there are symbols like ths [Confederate flag] that are hurtful and that need to be taken down."
