Sena ups the ante with the 30K Bluetooth Communicator. The big deal? Mesh network connectivity for coming in and out of network without having to reconnect every time a rider strays out of range. Sena accomplishes this using a second processor to maintain the mesh, making this their most powerful and flexible unit to date. All the specs are on our site, but here are some key numbers. The 30K will run for 8 hours in mesh mode or 13 in Bluetooth mode (Bluetooth 4.1). Range is 1 mile, or 1.2 on a mesh network.
It charges in 1.5 hours, or quick charges to a little under half power in 20 minutes. The Sena 30K is water-resistant.

Still using the old SMH10. Ran it through the washer and dryer in a buttoned shirt pocket and it still works perfectly. I'm pretty sure that would be considered waterproof.

I have purchased a pair of Sena 30K. The wind noise cancelling works well. I am using the ‘button’ mic on my open face helmet (not the boom mic) mounted on the forehead area of my helmet (on the flat section facing down). Others can hear and understand me without being drowned out with the wind noise. The most disappointing aspect of Sena 30K is the ear piece volume level. At the max level, it is only about half the max volume of Sena 20S!! I have tested with bluetooth music, 30K-to-30K and with 20S and in every case, I had my audio volume on 100% and I can’t make out the words in half of the conversations at highway speed. For that reason, I cannot recommend this unit.

Both of you keep telling us how great the Sena's are, What neither of you hasn't done is connect the 30K with 2 or 3 Sena 20s's, or SMH 10's, maybe good with 2 people, but when you add a group you get "crackling" and popcorn sounds, it's nearly impossible to use the Sena 20's with three other people. Mesh might be great if everyone you know upgrades but EVERYONE I know no longer trusts Sena because they couldn't (wouldn't) fix the 20s and I've yet to see any reviewer take 4 Sena's and run around a city, do a distance check, you know actually test the claimed specification. Maybe you should get 4 friends and test out the 20's with the 30K, a vioce like yours might actually get Sena to fix the 20s!

tacjam1 I have done this I had the 30k and I was paired with 2 Sena 20s's. The only thing I would say is the volume was low. Also though the device is not waterproof i listened to the radio for about 80 miles in the rain and had no issues. Also part of that ride was sitting in the rain stuck in bumper to bumper traffic.

I spent 14,000 miles and two months straight last year using a Sena 20S. When a rider would get out of range and come back in, that rider automatically was reconnected. It required no input from the riders to do so.

4yr old comment but still gives more clarity than online Reviews, they emphasize the word self healing a lot, but even on my smh5, when my solo partner goes out of range and comes back, all it takes is a tap on the jog dial to connect back to him. And now I've gotten a pair of 20S evo and was wondering if it would disconnect if it goes out of range, thanks for reassuring me. So I guess the distinctive advantage of mesh is the extended range.

I purchased the Sena HD branded 30k to be compatible with the HD Boom Box and WHIM. IT all pairs right up and makes Bluetooth connection for Music intercom phone and nav. works flawlessly if you never move. the moment you move any wind causes the mike to go into vox mode and shut off all music nav phone making those functions useless at anything over 5MPH even with the VOX sensitivity set low. Eventually you lose the intercom with your passenger also. Nothing you can do but wait for it to come back on for a couple of minutes or shut it off and back on. On a two-hour ride you can get 15 minutes of use at best. the cost for a pair of these and a WHIM for use on Harleys will be about 1000 bucks, don't waste your money, you would be better off with two cans and a string. I'm seriously considering unpairing them from the boom box and using it strictly for intercom a task my old SMH10 handled just fine. Money would be better spent on an aftermarket amp and upgraded speakers

Corrections. No the base is not the same. It’s a new button, slightly different interface. 30k does not clip on to older 20s bases. The speakers are slightly louder even using a 20s on the new base. The boom mic is slightly upgraded over 20s. SENA has said for a month now they are working on fixing it but so far no firmware updates.

Sena made a rolling update to the 20S base awhile ago, so the current 20S base is the same as the current 30K base. You are correct that it's different than the older 20S base though. We should have been clearer. -DrewZilla

Got the new 30K did the firmware update. It works great. Mesh tech is the nuts. Push 1 button and everyone in the group connects. Many additional options too. Save money and buy the dual kit with a buddy. Shop around and get a good price.

The firmware updates are more like fixes than feature additions. It's been six months and we're returning ours. Very disappointing. Battery performance is very low and they still don't have the ability to play music with Mesh and it has been removed for Bluetooth intercom, too.

Mesh technology on the 30K is useless. Tested it over 2000km (between two 30K users) and have reverted back to Bluetooth intercom (which is clear). Mesh only works clearly when you are riding under 30km/hour, and no more than 50m apart. Have tried everything that Sena support have suggested with hard resets and firmware restores and updates. It constantly breaks up you can only hear every fourth word spoken. Upgraded to this for the mesh technology - don’t waste your money.

20S supports up to 8 20S riders, 30K supports connection only with 3 other riders using old (20S) network. Due the fact that all my friends have 20S, I didn't like to be limited and also ordered 20S

You're not really limited if they all connect as a daisy-chain instead of everyone to your Sena.

20s supports up to 8 riders IN THEORY. Our group has ridden with 20s units for 3 seasons. Got them to work with 6 riders briefly once. Our experience- 2 riders excellent, 3 good and easy to connect, 4 fair with lots of disconnects. Popcorn noise starts with 3 riders, gets worse the more there are. When the chain gets broken there are ear-splitting beeps- better to end intercom and reconnect manually when back in range. Group Intercom feature is a joke- rarely works, and if someone gets out of range and breaks the chain there is hell to pay getting it to work again.

I rode a couple hundred miles in to the face of Tropical Storm Cindy last summer on a ride. The 20S never had an issue and I can tell you straight, it was wet as hell, and it was hard driven rain going north up Florida from the keys, then turning west toward New Orleans, Louisiana. We never lost comm, and it never stopped working.

I'm SOL at the moment too 75% I take it off my helmet when I walk in to a place. One of the 25% I didn't, some asshole individual took my 20S off my helmet. I'm still pretty salty over that since money is so tight for me leading up to a ride to Laconia this summer, and I can't now replace it in time for the ride. What an asshole move. I'm expanding my Bluetooth solutions now, but it will be a long time before I can pick one up again.

V Star 1300 Adventures my 20s had problems with rain. It'd stop in a downpour, but let it dry and it worked again. I ran a bead of silicone sealant around the gap, aw and it's been ok since.

Just an FYI, if you connect to an older Sena 20 or 10, you can not listen to music or gps if you are in regular intercom mode (not GPS)

Reviews on YT are a dime a dozen.. I'd rather see ACTUAL TESTS of the mic sensitivity, noise/wind reduction, loudness of speakers (dB), connectivity with other devices using Bluetooth or mesh, sound quality, small or large groups and not to forget, range in urban or highway etc. Waterproof? Then throw it into a bucket of water and actually prove that it delivers what these feature reviews promise... I'd suggest doing this test at the end.

Just to point out that Cardo units are rated at IP67 and are relatively waterproof (backed by the manufacturer) whereas Sena units are NOT waterproof or water resistant in any way. Sena units come with 'dust covers' for open ports and button gaiters etc but are not suitable for rain! Sena make no mention of 'weatherproofing of any of its product documentation. I live in Northern England and found out the hard way. Wet weather riders be warned!

Are you saying you went to the _Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity_ setting in the Sena Device Manager or Sena Smartphone App as detailed in section 7.8 of the manual, tried changing the settings, and nothing happened? If so, I recommend seeing if you are running the latest version of the firmware. If that doesn't help, then I would try to troubleshoot with Sena. -DrewZilla

Have 20S and love it! Got 30K Harley-Davidson unit to use with Boom! GTS. Junk. First, I could use much better speakers on 20S. It has 3.5mm connection. 30K - no aftermarket speaker option. Proprietary connection and awful speakers. Phone connection with headset not working. Yes it is paired with phone. Pressing phone button not working. Saying hello not working. Ugh. Buy before you try. What is the sound quality on these things? From my experience, the sound is really tinny with almost no dynamic range and impossible to hear clearly at speed, especially when playing music. Best to just get a nice BT in-ear headset. They block out 80% or so of the outside noise, work with half-helmets, the sound quality is great, and calls are clear. OK, you cannot walkie talkie with anyone else, but to me that is a sacrifice worth making.

Sana 30 K is junk pathetic intercom above 30 mph. Customer service is non existent. After 20 days they finally responded and after38 days I finally received a return authorization The said it could be a month after they receive my head set before a replacement is sent out because the demand for replacement is so high! If me and my buddy are talking over both 20S's, the range is simply awful. It'll drop after only 300 meters, when the advertised range is up to 2 kilometers. Flat ground and no obstacles. Will the 30K perform better?

Why bluetooth? Most conversations between rider n passenger are private. So it must be a closed comunication. And it will be enough by using cheap cabled intercom. For talk with another, use a simple 150Mhz FM radio which is legal. Range miles away. Dont get it.

You can charge the device via microUSB attached to an auxiliary USB battery in a jacket pocket. Unfortunately, we don't have any experience with any sprays. As for motovlogging, yes, some people do use these for motorcycle videos, though most people just attach an external microphone to a GoPro. -DrewZilla

CURIOUS Music sound quality. I just received my AGV Carbon fiber sport modular and can not hear my music through my Streetglide speakers. I do however hear the GPS quite well at 75MPH.. so how will the sound be??

The app sucks. Unit battery level is not available anywhere. Not in the app, not in notification, nowhere. It can tell you what firmware you are in and suggest you update firmware but you have to find a computer and load their software on there for that. Who uses a headset with a pc? All of my Bluetooth headset have been able to update former from the app from other makers. Sena advertised the ability to charge while using but their technician said specifically "it can, but i don't recommend. It may damage battery."

Sena have FM radio functionality, but when will Digital Radio become standard?Also the button pressing sequences for Sena are not as good a Cardo. For example you cannot initiate a phone call while listening to the radio without multiple button presses (including one which is press and hold). Any progress here?

Thanks Drew but I think the phone button doubles as the radio button. To make a phone call you have to press and hold the phone button (2 seconds) to turn the radio off then press the button again to initiate the call. Also, do you have any info on a digital radio inclusion? Justin

Ah, forgive me, I was focused on answering a call with the FM radio on. You're right, though. As for digital radio, Sena has said nothing about including it, and my gut says not to expect it anytime soon. -DrewZilla

Thanks Drew. I own both a Scala Rider G9 and Sena 20K. The Scala Rider is far easier to use however as your review says quite correctly the Sena has some other benefits. I keep waiting for Sena to deliver a better user interface via software update but it's not happening.

What if you use the bluetooth and mesh function at the same time, so using both processors. What will the battery life be then?

Because if the battery life with only bluetooth is 13 hours and only mesh is 8 hours, then together it could be less then 5 hours.

The 13 hour talk time refers to Bluetooth intercom (not Bluetooth music streaming), and you cannot use Bluetooth intercom at the same time as mesh intercom. The mesh intercom battery life takes into account streaming Bluetooth music, so the 8 hour estimate would still apply. -DrewZilla

Currently have a Freewire paired with my 20S and bluetooth phone. I can send/receive calls on my phone but I can't stream music from my phone via bluetooth to my 20S without disconnecting the Freewire. Its an either/or proposition and this seems by design a limitation of the 20S. Is the 30k different in that it CAN stream bluetooth music from my phone and stay connected to my Freewire? Would definitely buy a 30k if I knew for sure it would work that way.

The 30K has the same limitation in that you can only listen to one stereo audio source at a time. The Freewire is optimized for newer Gold Wings and Harley Touring bikes that have infotainment systems. In those cases, music from your phone is streamed through the bike's infotainment system, ported to the the Freewire, and then on to the headset. On older Gold Wings, that option doesn't exist. -DrewZilla

I have rode 3 hours in a extreme rainstorm, i was completely soaked while using the 30k the whole time. Think about it guys... while moving, water never sits on the unit, so water never gets inside. Therefore.. its waterproof to me.

I bought a helmet that is communicator ready, with small rectangular opening in the right side, but only accept Chatter Box brand, which is horrible, the sound is very bad, reason why I looking for other brand. I noticed that Sena equipment in order to be installed needed a clip mechanism an I need to know if it can be installed in a helmet like my. If someone when through the same process please let me know.

Still disappointing Anthony if you ask me. I mean, I've been on the 20S for the last year + but it really lacks distance for connectivity. The old school chatterbox Bluetooth i was using back in the day had at least 5-6 times the range if not more. Sena, as soon as you get two quick turns ahead of others in the canyons you lose them they lose contact with you. It's a shame and a major disappointment overall!

Neither Sena nor BMW confirm functionality, but based on forum chatter, the 30K is about 90% compatible. You just cannot control volume from the handlebar wheel. You must control volume via the 30K's jog dial. -DrewZilla

Already ordered my new Goldwing tour with DCT would like to get away from the CB as long as I can communicate with all my buds while riding. Just so we all understand, if you are attempting to connect with other riders using DMC mode and you are trying to link via Bluetooth, if the link is lost in Bluetooth mode it will not reconnect rider automatically. Now DMC technology does not mesh with other brands of headsets, this like saying iPhone users can only talk to other iPhone users. Because DMC technology is considered a closed loop communication system, the FCC does not come into play here. So these companies are going to fight for supremacy by brand loyalty only. Oh and one last thing, why are you selling the headset and also selling upgraded better quality ear pieces, shouldn’t that just be what comes with the unit. The whole thing sounds like your company is just gouging its customers. Look at it this way, I don’t go to purchase a car tire and they tell me the tire comes with half the tread depth but if you want the full depth it’s extra, they just sell me the best tire they can manufacture. It’s just plain ridiculous.
