The Sena Cavalry Helmet is US DOT approved, is of great build quality, and fairly light weight. It has a Sena 10R headset Bluetooth system built right in and integrated nicely. The speakers are built right into the helmet and sound great for a helmet style headset. There are ear flaps that help direct the speaker sound into your ears.
This helmet allows you to pair your smartphone directly to your Cavalry helmet. Built into the upper front portion of the helmet is a noise canceling microphone. You can listen to your music wirelessly and make phone calls going down the freeway at 70+ mph. Yah-really, in a half helmet! You can also pair your Cavalry helmet with up to three other riders for group or single communications at a max distance of 1/2 mile was our findings.
Note: I was actually very impressed at how well the Sena Cavalry Half Helmet microphone and speakers performed at freeway speeds on a fairing motorcycle! I didn't even have to turn the volume all the way up at 70 mph. The technology is amazing and Sena did it right.
The Cavalry helmet does pair with the Sena Freewire Bluetooth transmitter/receiver. When the two are paired, this allows you to have wireless integration with your Harley-Davidson Boom!™ Box Infotainment System. You can give voice commands directly to the Boom Box system and hear anything coming out of the Boom Box such as music and GPS voice directions wirelessly inside your Cavalry helmet.
Note: My findings are that up to about 40 mph on a fairing bike, you can give voice commands via the Cavalry Helmet if paired directly with your smartphone or via the Freewire to the Boom Box fairly consistently. At above 40 mph, the software in the smartphones and Boom Box just simply can't understand or recognize what you are saying. That's due to the extra wind noise over your voice through the helmet's microphone.
This is only for voice commands (40 mph). Having actual phone conversation, communicating to another rider with a Cavalry Helmet, or listening to music is just fine at 70+ mph. Instead of telling your phone to "dial" a particular name/number in your contact list via voice command, you could simply just reach up and hit the contact on your smartphone to dial. That is if your smartphone is sitting securely in your Biker Gripper Cell Phone Motorcycle Mount!

The Calvary helmet is definitely geared more towards a touring rider with a fairing or windshield, which helps cut down wind noise, so you can hear the music, make phone calls, use rider-to-rider communications, and give voice commands. The capabilities of the Sena Cavalry helmet are greatly reduced if riding a motorcycle without a fairing due to the added wind noise. If just riding around town or slow country roads, you may be able to use the Cavalry helmet on a motorcycle without wind protection.
The Sena 10R headset that is built into the Cavalry charges fully in about three hours and has about 10 hours talk time. There is also an FM radio built in with station presets. Of course, you can pair your Cavalry with Sena's beautiful smartphone app to easily manage settings. Using Sena's desktop app for MAC or Windows, you can plug your helmet in and update the software, which should be done immediately.

Absolutely love the visor on the helmet wish it was a bit larger so that with a little tilt of your head would block the the sun when riding West in the evening. Good review but sena is so over priced. The Fodsport m1 plus on a Bit Boss is a much better choice and fit imo. The sena has a awkward fit compared to other helmets.

Thanks for the review. I'm a longtime time Sena owner (pre SMH10 with USB connection). I purchased these for my wife and I, and they do indeed function very well (well above my expectations). I ride a St Glide with a 8 inch shorty windscreen, and the wife rides a Road King Classic with the full windscreen. We can intercom communicate at speeds of 70 MPH without any issue. Sound quality (iPhone stream or internal FM receiver) is very acceptable even at that speed. Much much better than the bike mounted stereo system at the same speeds. The only time I ever turn the bike stereo on is when the bikes are being washed.

Good video. Mama had been using an Arai that over the years wore out. Since then she replaced it with a Bell Pit Boss (how anyone goes from wearing a premium full face to a shorty is an altogether different subject) ...but her Sena 20s can't be mounted. The Sena Calvary looks like it will do the trick!

Works excellent when paired with one other person, they said the don’t hear any wind or anything, but when paired with 3 people it sounds over modulated, and not being understand what someone is saying and having to constantly turn it off and back on for 5 minutes later for the same thing and after getting tired of that eventually turning it off all together!!

This is probably the only review I sat through until the very end. Great review, perfectly done and hit all the points needed. I've used Sena products for years now and was excited to see this helmet. Would love to ride without a boom stuck in your face. I would like to know where you were riding. Looks like somewhere I would like to ride.

I like the fact that you give honest feedback about the use and usage of the helmet and about its limitations. I ride a 2017 Victory with no fairing, but I mostly ride alone so I think this will be great for me. In your honest opinion, would you recommend external speakers or the blue tooth headset?

This is a good video. I have run into one problem with the Sena Freewire HD and Cavalry Helmet. This problem is I am getting echo when making phone calls. I hear everything I say in the helmet. I have updated the firmware on all three, that being the Freewire, Cavalry and the HD Boombox. Is there anyone else who has this same issue.

I realize the video is 4 years old but I'm searching out all the info on this helmet since I'm considering buying one. I'd like to say that even though it's a good comm review I think you missed the fact that it is a helmet with a comm system, not a comm system that's sold with a helmet. How did the helmet fit? How's the build quality? Hot spots? Wind noise? (yes, some half helmets are noisier than others) I can tell you're an oval or semi-oval. Did you wear it for several hours? You sold me on the comm system though, great video on that.

I wish they had this helmet for sale in my size on Revzilla, I’ve been wanting to try one but they don’t have my size available and I have a bunch of “free bucks” on that site to get the price down a bit more. I’m looking for a good summer half helmet that I can put a device like that SENA on it without it looking goofy. I usually wear a full face helmet but the summers here in Arizona get WAY too hot for a full face and that helmet doesn’t look too goofy, who knows what it’d look like a how it’d fit my head.

Hi Ryan. I realize this video is over 3 years old, but I am interested in purchasing this and using it with my 2014 SGS. My question is, will my phone bluetooth both to it and my HD Boombox system? Would I have the choice of where to hear my music from, whether through the Boombox and bike speakers or the helmet speakers? And if that is the case and I'm using my bike speakers, can I still take calls with the helmet? Just wondering if there is an integrated functionality for all that? Or would I need the freewire kit? I noticed you mentioned the fact that you were able to connect to 4 riders with this device, I have had a few Senas now, is there a good technique to connect multiple people to the Senas, on a ride two years back, we had 8 riders, with all different models of Senas. However, we were never able to connect all of us together, even with 4 Sena 20s in the group. Not sure if it was a firmware problem from one Sena, or if we are just completely doing something wrong, we figured we could use one of the 20s as a hub, but were never able to accomplish compete hook up, except for one time, by some kind of miracle. Just curious if there is a set of steps that you may have come across for hooking up large groups of riders together, it would be most helpful, I have been able to connect 4 at once, but that was the best I could do, on a consistent basis. I would love to get this helmet but the only reason i am not is i am hoping that down the road SENA will have listen to everyone and incorporate a drop down sunshade. hopefully one that can be detached and replace with either sun shade or clear. what 1/2 buetooth helmet do you recommend for 1200c sportser with out a windsheild. the man application will be just to hear a radio. not concerned really with communtication with phone or or other riders. really just want to ride around 70 miles an hour a hear the music. thank you

No, a GoPro will not pair with a headset. You'd have to buy some aftermarket product to get the GoPro to pair with a headset. I don't know of any off hand.

My bike is so loud "Bassani" True Dual Pipes. I have to wear ear plugs or go deaf...THis interferes with any listening to music or cell phones, etc. I am looking at getting some hearing aids that will take care of both problems...like the Musicians do these days with their ear bud sound systems

With all due respect, DOT is the lowest possible safety rating of all. No one should be riding Motorcycle with that Helmet. Chin and forehead are the first to hit in case of an accident. Easily done. When the call comes in you'll have an option on your phone on which Bluetooth device you want to sent to. Just pic the Boom Box or the Sena Cavalry. Bingo.
