A Subscriber called Fred asked if I would be able to take a look at a Sena SP46 Motorcycle, which wouldn't turn on after a battery replacement. There was quite a significant amount of damage, so let's see if it's even possible to repair it....
I'm not an expert, but I do enjoy trying to fix things.

Thanks mate 👍Yes it was. Partly why I've had this for such a long time. First was getting the courage to tackle it, then after doing the removal of the socket, ordering the strips, doing the first row, then having break for a couple of weeks, going back to it, doing the 2nd row, having another break etc. I couldn't have done it all in one sitting.

Holy cow! You should get some sort of award for that microscopic track repair! Bad product design that needs the 2 boards separating to get at the battery connector... unless they were designing it to get easily broken to sell more. A good eye and steady hands you've got there bro. Even under a microscope that was some fidgety work. Your patience is becoming legendary, sometimes I lose it just watching😉 Those PCB replacement traces are thinner than a hair and weigh nothing, surprised you could get them to work, well done. Working on someone else's bodged attempt is the worst, the damage is usually doubled or worse. Great video and job on the repair, this time it was all mechanical but highly entertaining. Thanks. See ya soon.

Cheers Brian 👍I've only sent it back today, and finished the repair a couple of days ago. I would imagine it will be fine, as the original fault was it not switching on after a battery replacement. The connector goes to the power button and the controls so perhaps it got damaged slightly when the unit was first disassembled.

When confronted by an board interconnect issue like this, I often use transformer wire (hair fine) and hard wire the interconnect after mapping out the trace locations. I then bundle and tie together as a tiny multi core cable. Good fix as I thought you might struggle with connections separating when mating the boards back together. 👍

Great job with that micro connector. One of my own bike intercoms is always shedding it's micro usb connector because they're so delicate. On the subject of testing, I've got a pair of Sena intercoms and if your viewers unit has a universal intercom pairing function, it should pair with anything that uses the universal intercom protocol, even a pair of bluetooth ear buds. Mine seems eager to pair with pretty much anything with a bluetooth audio connection. Bluetooth speaker, any intercom it can find. Even on one hilarious occasion I came home and as I was pulling into the back yard it connected to my son's stereo while he was 'entertaining' his girlfriend in his room. THANK GOD it was a one way connection and he could hear me singing but I couldn't hear him. 😮

I've done that before, replacing pads, barrels and traces. Not anything this numerous! It is NOT for the feint of heart. It is very "fiddly", to say the least. So satisfying when you can get one in place, nice and straight and have a complete, unimpeded path reconstructed! Aaah.. My fixes were "simple" (one trace and a pad) compared to what you have to fix. I did not know about the mask liquid. That make sense. Nice to know that can also be replaced.

Thanks, yes that's pretty much what the original guy did. I thought I'd have a go with these strips and it did seem to be a lot neater when finished although it was very time consuming. Yes the traces went to test points, the connector goes to the power switch and user controls which probably explains why it wasn't switching on.

Thanks 👍I'd assume the rest of it was working, as the original problem was just the battery, and then it wouldn't turn on. That connector goes to the power switch and the press button / wheel control, so I guess that was the cause of the problem.

Aw you would love my new test meter, a NOS 1970's Soviet u4341 AVO meter with all its leads and prongs in sealed wax bags and even its testing components to calibrate never used, got it for a tenner off of ebay and its working like brand new, only nause was the orange protective foam cushions inside had reacted with the paint on the front panel and lifted some of the printing off. Very accurate as its a military spec meter, OK it doesn't have a beeper on it but can do milliamps, volts AC and DC, ohms singular, kilo and mega and capable of testing 3 phase mains... Def recommend picking one of these up, abs gawjus Soviet technology still working nigh on 50 years later :)

14:44 - I think, it would help if you put some soldering paste there ("cinol" is what I use), then you put trace pad, just so it stick to it so it doesnt move or flip, then you put drop of solder mask and cure it. If you do it dry, nothing is there to prevent it from moving. Just like solder balls, its easier when you put paste, remove it, then balls stick to the place because of small amount of paste remained there.
@BuyitFixit

I did have a search for cinol but some weird drug came up instead 😂😂😂

@@BuyitFixit I searched for ingredients, cinol or tinol paste, is vaseline paste that contains Zinc chloride. Try searching Zinc chloride, it should display this: Zinc chloride is used as a soldering flux, battery electrolyte, and crowd control agent. The point is, its viscosity is not liquid and not hard like rosin, its like gel, so it can hold traces while they are soldered or cured with UV lamp. Something like AMtech paste in syringes.

Thanks, yes good call. Sometimes it's hard to keep going as there's a bit pressure now to keep my followers happy with a new video 🙂I'll probably have to take a break at some point but I'm trying to get a few easy repairs so I can have a few videos in "backup" for when I haven't got time. This one would have taken a full week up pretty much time I spent on it, and editing etc so I had to do it in between other repairs and the other things I have to do.

I did think of that, but the "fault" was no power after the battery was changed. The connector that was damaged goes to the power buttons / volume controls, so the rest should be OK as that wasn't the fault.

@@BuyitFixit Dumont are possibly the best however they would be much better for the copper tracks they don't open wide enough for smd work. I use both types myself and there are so many types but the main difference is they are so much stronger.

Great repair as usual. I have wondered if it would be possible to glue lifted/replacement tracks down using high temperature paint, the kind that's used on fires/exhausts etc. Apparently it works up to 600c, and sticks to metal so it might work. I just haven't had any repairs recently to try it out.
@BuyitFixit

Possibly, It would be better if they were slightly self adhesive, then you could use the PCB mask on them at each end to secure them. The problem I was having was they getting them into position and getting them to lay flat on the board properly.
