As a wayward pediatrician, I'll accept the blame for what we were recommending while I was in medical school. Then, as adults for some reason they sought out all the foods they'd become addicted to. And yes, literally addicted. Because for decades these food-like product manufacturers built processing and production lines to create "food" more addictive than cocaine, nicotine or alcohol.

Clearly these “immediate” changes will need time to dig into the current practices but are the start and the bare minimum.

I’m a dietitian and treat many children with overweight, obesity, prediabetes, T2DM, fatty liver and dyslipedimia. 98% of these children have at least one of the 4 things in common: don’t eat more than 1-2 vegetables or fruits per day, drink sugary drinks including fruit juice, soda, sport drinks and flavored milk, spend more than 2 hours in screen time (the new baby sitter) and they are not active at all. There are many studies that show the importance of a registered dietitian to treat all of these diseases. However, no all insurance including Medicare and Medicaid cover all of them. Parents and children need nutrition education. Fighting against food industry is part of the solution for treating and prevention. The food industry is not congruent with the dietary guidelines. Dietitians should be there in the first line for prevention and treating those conditions. Food industry should be liable for part of the health cost of those.

The difference in packaged food here and in Europe is tremendous. I lose weight there eating rich flavorful food for less. Farmers markets everywhere!! To come home and gain weight immediately!! And I eat healthy!! Sugar salt and chemicals are added to the simplest of things unnecessarily!!!❤❤

I remember when I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960s there were ads for frozen plain vegetables like peas and green beans, there were no junkfood ads and 90% of Americans were slim. Now we have nothing but junkfood ads and 90% of Americans are overweight or frankly obese. Most people know these foods are not healthy but it is what they can afford that is available on supermarket shelves, and they have no idea how those foods are directly going to destroy their health and thus their happiness in life and a happy & healthy retirement. The FDA representative saying enforcing rules will harm the American farmer is bull, those farm products do not need to be turned into ultra-processed foods but can be made into less processed or unprocessed foods people can buy. The FDA is not here to protect the food manufacturers but to protect the American public from the food companies abuse and manipulation of foods contents to make it more addictive and hence more profitable.

Since our traditional, by now, processed foods diet has eroded our cooking knowledge base and skills!
