Also, made a mistake on one part of the video. The word "dunouement" is actually spelled "denouement". The fixed version of this video is provided below. It's an HD-ready file. ouo)v
This is me singing with a sore throat, so please excuse some of the off-notes. 8DD;;

Decided to do this song because we're currently learning about the Meiji Restoration in History class. Senbon Zakura is about the Westernization of Japan, so the song made so much sense to me after learning so much about that period. I went "WHAT THE HECK, I'LL WRITE LYRICS TO IT 8DDDD"
I tried to keep the Japanese feel to it but I did stray off the translation a bit in some parts just because I thought they'd sound strange. I decided to put some allusions to them instead (eg. previous life = Edo period, flag of our sun rising = Japanese flag). So this is kind of half adaptation and half translyrics.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this!
Have a pleasant day~

It actually sounds good. Not being mean but when a song is usually translated and sung it sounds so awkward and just doesn't fit as well. I like how the voice is actually in a harmony with the tune of the song. The first I've heard that sounds so well.

So as a professional Japanese translator and someone who's worked in localization for just under a decade, I just wanted to say that I really love what you did with the lyrics here. It's not easy task to translate songs, and especially not into lyrics that a) scan with the tune, b) rhyme, and c) keep the intent of the original. Your version manages all that. Well done! (I'm especially fond of the "penny farthing/our sun rising" couplet.) Also, you've got a great voice! I love how this sounds!

So two amazing English covers were released, both with the same lyrics but different styles. However, there's one question that's been looming around for awhile now. Which one is better, Lizz or Kran? The truth is, it depends on what you’re looking for. I have no preference between the two, they’re both great, but I would love to hear your thoughts in replies! Kran’s version has a tendency to really make you feel like she’s a general and she’s singing to you about the war. She really… Takes you there, if you know what I mean. When listening to it, I feel like I'm actually there, it's upbeat and energetic and will get you on your feet. It would be pretty encouraging to play during the actual war. Meanwhile, Lizz’s version also takes you there, but in a different way. Her way of beautiful piano and soft voice can make your veins rushing with empathy. The way she sounds inspiring and her slow “ooh”s, it really sounds like she’s pouring her heart and soul into every note. (Don't get me wrong, it's not like Kran doesn't do that, heh.) Her sadder, more beautiful yet less energetic version can give you a feel of the tragedy they felt during the war. Empathy, so much empathy. Like I said, I wasn't trying to really say any of them is better, I think they’re both great and I give them an equal amount of love, but I would love to hear what you think in your replies!

Just wanted to thank you for posting such a thoughtful comment. :) I am very much in love with Lizz's take on the lyrics I wrote, and it personally saddens me a little when I see people trying to pit the two of us against each other. It's definitely chill to prefer one version over the other but the whole "who's better than who?" question is unfair to the both of us who have different strengths. Thank you again for making my day!

+DeadPistolsBrainGerms Its about the Boshin War. The civil war between the Imperialists and the Shogunate that ended in the overthrow of the Bakufu government, the destruction of the samurai class and restored the Emperor as the legitimate head of state as opposed to just a quasi religious figure head. Its largely romanticised as a war between traditionalist samurai and modernist Imperials but in truth both sides used both traditional and modern methods of warfare. The Satsuma clan, one of the major factions involved in overthrowing the Shogunate actually rebelled against the new regime when they abolished the right for samurai to carry swords.

We covered some of Taisho era for my Japanese history class back when I wrote this, so I had a bit of a Meiji-Taisho kind of mindset while I was writing the lyrics for this. Glad you pointed out this was more of a Taisho thing though. I'll definitely look more into that. :)

It's the Meiji Restoration. Happened before world war one. (I think. I'm not entirely sure I'd suggest looking it up. But I'm fairly sure it's the Meiji Restoration. ) Edit: okay yeah so coming back after having to do extensive research on Japan during World War II, this song is most definitely about Japan during World War II. I also found out that the pilots of planes would spray themselves with cherry blossom scented perfume, so if they died, it would smell like cherry blossoms falling from the sky. Hmm.... After putting it that way, "thousands of cherry blossoms dwindling in the light" seems a bit more sinister.

I changed some of the words a little bit so it's easier to sing in English. Prison has harder consonant sounds and it's hard to make it flow while singing. I apologize for changing it but I did try to keep the overall meaning of the song intact! m(_ _)m

I am aware of that but I chose to sing it as it is in this dub because it flowed better. The pronunciation I used is acceptable and common in the English language. I checked various online dictionaries. Thanks for commenting!

I love this cover, it is by far my favorite. The one mistake I'd like to point out is a simple mispronunciation: 'guillotine' is pronounced 'gee-yuh-teen', not 'gill-uh-teen'. It's weird, I know, and I know how easy to get that one wrong; I did it for years. I still love teh cover! It is amazing! You have a beautiful voice.

In fact, she already knew it. ;) And we, French people don't care that much about pronunciation ! French is quite a painful language to learn....

From what I've learned from my classes (which I know is nowhere near the actual learning process), I can agree that it's hard. And I'm a bit of a Nazi about things like spelling, pronunciation, grammar, and punctuation, being the child of an English teacher.
@fxsynth

+Rose Lalonde Demoiselle La Vanille is correct. I actually took French lessons for about 3 years and I did research quite extensively while making lyrics to this song. The pronunciation was intended to be the way it is for lyrical flow. English has plenty of words that we use on a daily basis that were taken from other languages and changed almost completely. I believe there's no harm in the change of pronunciation as long as the French still know how to say it properly and continue to maintain that in their own language (which they do a fantastic job at considering the various organizations that promote French language and culture). :)

Great dub! Number one you are a pretty good singer (especially if that was you with a sore throat), enjoyed your singing, Great JOB! Number two, I also learned about the Meiji period in my history class, good job, I actually felt that your lyrics are amazing. Not only do they keep relatively close to the Japanese, but they fit with the purpose and meaning behind the song. I think this is one of the best dubs I've heard of a vocaloid song yet! GREAT JOB!

I really like this cover but just a small point of clarification. I was under the impression that 此処は宴 鋼の檻 means "this banquet (as in dinner feast) here is an iron cage (or This banquet that surrounds is an iron cage, going by how you translated it)" rather than this "bouquet (as in flower)". Just a small point that bothered me a little bit. But overall, I really really enjoyed this.
@fxsynth
@fxsynth 11 жыл бұрын
As I've mentioned in earlier comments -- probably might've not seen it since it was a long time ago -- I changed some of the words so that it's easier to sing but did try to keep the original overall meaning intact. I chose to use "bouquet" for creative purposes. You can try singing it with "banquet" instead to see what I mean.

+Chin Yi Chow Essentially, the "feast" is the advantages of Western Civilization while in the "steel cage" or prison of losing the freedom of being true Japanese. When the borders were forced open, quite a few Japanese traditions went to the wayside. Even today, there is a threat of losing some critical elements and there aren't that many living national treasures left. It was better to lose some of their identity through acceptance rather than lose it all through conquest. After all, the West were the ones shooting the Samurai which is why Japan had no choice. They needed to embrace these new technologies and couldn't do it isolated. If they had ignored the new inventions, Japan would have left itself completely vulnerable to whomever wanted to physically take it over.
