Send APRS Messages Via SMS

APRS is probably my most favorite mode in amateur radio. It's so versatile in that you can connect all sort of devices and digital information along with the APRS message.

Here in my area of the USA. I use a old Android phone running the APRSdroid app. A Baofeng UV5R and a amazon APRS audio cable.

A problem I find sometimes is that many digipeaters are RX only. If that's the case where you are you'll never get a message back. I set my digipeater up to be bidirectional. Otherwise APRS just turns into a tracking system. That's not as much fun I think...

Hi Hayden, great video; it’s very cool we can use APRS here in VK land. I’ve just started looking for a good dual band radio I can take with me in the car as I travel most places with repeater coverage. This is very cool to know we use these tools as Sat Phone are proving to be unreliable. Be safe David

I had similar issue receiving SMS on my radio. I found that you need to send out a normal APRS beacon first so the network knows where to find you.

No, if a friend has a cell sign and sends you a APRS SMS to your cellphone, you CAN answer him/her, but it seems this service won't send from the cellphone back to the radio

So the only way to text other cell phones is for the other user to be opted in for the aprs sms service.

It sounds like you didn't watch the FULL video. As you can see, he can send it from his HT to the cellphone but not the cellphone to the HT.

@@lovedfriend2020 I did watch the whole video, I was confirming that the only way for the text to reach the cell phone is if the phone was opted in the system to receive aprs messages.

I've only noticed that you have to CAP the word SMS. It can't be lower case.

I did a test and subscribed my number in the Australian format and it said you are opted in... Then I tried to opt out with the same copied text format and it says invalid format... any idea why this would do that?
