I'm 65. Became a Christian at age 15, just about this time of year 50 years ago, out of nowhere. A girl shared the Gospel, and the Holy Spirit revealed Christ to me, and it completely changed my life, thank goodness, because as difficult as life has been with Christ, I can't imagine what my life would have been otherwise. This was one of my favorite hymns, and I still love it.

His name is Jesus.’ I do not know if those she spoke to were listening. But I made Jesus my friend there and then - by the action of the Holy Spirit - and He is my Lord and Saviour since then, fifty years ago. Praise God from whom all good things come.

I wonder whether you may have had the misfortune of meeting professed Christians who say (or imply) that if you don't subscribe to their particular creed, you are not a Christian. Many Christians suggest that you read the Bible, starting with the Gospel of John. This may seem strange but I suggest that you read the Bible, starting with the first twenty chapters of Exodus. That way, you will be acquainted with Moses, the man who wrote the book of Genesis. After you read Genesis, if you have any questions, I'll be glad to explain how I understand things but I admit there is more than one way to understand them.

I am 63. I haven’t heard this song since I was a teenager. As soon as I heard it I automatically remembered our secondary choir director who was also my Sunday School teacher, Mrs Opal Lambert. She loved it and we would sing it whenever she was directing the music. Beautiful.❤

In my opinion: I’m in my sixties, and there are a lot of people, my age, who don’t listen to this kind of music. But the modern, mood, music, doesn’t make the Lord, Jesus Christ, feel welcome in my life. And I won’t feel any strength from it, though it affects the emotions. Just as the rock ‘n roll beat, that slithers it’s way into a song, usually on the second verse of some singers singing,that won’t make the Lord feel welcome, or strengthen me spiritually; no matter how spiritual the words in that song may be. It reminds me of all the added versions of the Bible, that just won’t do for me, when I have a need, and see my prayers answered. They sound so eloquent, and superb, and a cut above the rest. But they don’t bring about the results, that the good old ‘unrevised’ King James Version Bible, does for my soul.

In addition to the beautiful harmony, I thank you for displaying the words of the hymn as you sing. It's when our minds dwell on the meaning of the words of any given hymn as we sing that we can truly "make melody" in our hearts to the Lord (Eph 5:19) and sing "with grace" in our hearts to the end of letting the word of Christ dwell in us richly (cf. Col 3:16). Also, being slightly hard of hearing, I often fail to distinguish the words of others as I listen to them sing, so in the absence of a hymnal in my hands, I get so much more out of a hymn as the words are displayed on the screen. Charles Gabriel, originally publishing this song in 1890, included an eight measure bass solo at the start of the Refrain. Most modern hymnals have removed this optional passage. We believe it makes the song that much better! It is printed in Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs hymnal as Gabriel originally composed it. We love how Acapeldridge brought this sound to life!

As I'm continually trying to expand my hymnological horizons, I'm curious where you came across this. The most I can find online, other than this, is a blog post from 2008 referencing the 8 bass led measures being omitted. I'm trying to track down when the change happened. It must have happened a long time ago. Contrasted with "Jesus Is Coming Soon" where most hymnals do have the original music, while most congregations sing the 60s "CCM" version. Kinda makes me wonder if maybe Gabriel himself published a version of the song without the bass lead? Anyway... I ordered a copy of your hymnal. I'm sure there will be other interesting songs in there :) Thanks!

it’s amazing how the Lord will put a song in our hearts, at times out of nowhere a song that I haven’t even thought of in a long time will pop into my mind and immediately the Lord gives clarity of mind to sing the entire song or even a scripture the same way. The Holy Spirit is so generous to help and comfort and encourage us in such ways, to God be all glory and honor, it’s amazing. There is a reason that these great hymn writers composed the way they did. Some might feel that there are "too many verses." I do not feel that way. They wrote what needed to be conveyed to and through the worshippers. In the back of my mind, while listening to this hymn I asked myself, "Why would most modern hymnals drop that middle part?" Save space in a hymn book? I don't know. What I do know is that this missing/yet found piece speaks to me directly; it's not about sending someone else, it's about me going; I am sent to the harvest field. Wow, what a wonderful treatment of this powerful hymn. Thank you for sharing your glorious talents and abilities my singing friend. To God be the glory!
