Now try the same flight but launch at sunset, and keep the rocket pointing directly away from the planet and the sun perpendicular to the side of the rocket. Don't worry about pointing at the sun. You are trying to fall into the sun, not fly to it. Even when the rocket is sitting on the launch pad it is still orbiting the sun. Your entire energy should be directed as a de-orbital burn. Think about it. Consider this: If you are on the ISS orbiting in a 90 minute orbit, and you go EVA and throw a baseball directly towards the center of the Earth, the baseball will appear to go towards the Earth but 90 minutes later it will return to hit you in the head. You didn't change it's orbital period, you simply changed it's orbital symmetry. The highest point of it's new orbit is the exact spot where you threw it.

it's probably more efficient to fly *away* from the sun and then at the edge of the solar system you turn around, letting the sun's gravity pull you in. Using planets to gravity slingshot yourself along the way will leave you with a lot of fuel to correct your trajectory towards the sun.

So... this video has lived in my head rent-free for the last few weeks. As a big fan of KSP, and orbital mechanics in general, I know that this mission was doomed from the start. Flying straight towards the sun is NOT the most efficient way to get to the sun, by far. HOWEVER, if you take a circular orbit around the sun, aim towards the sun and just keep flying towards it, eventually (with enough delta-v) you should be able to make an extremely elliptical orbit with a periapsis low enough that it hit the sun's surface. So I spent a few hours debating with ChatGPT about how to do the math on this and eventually decided to just go ahead and simulate it KSP2 with infinite fuel. Long story short, you would require over 600k m/s of delta-v (starting just outside the sphere of influence of kerbin but still orbiting the sun in a roughly circular orbit) fired directly towards the center of the sun to manage to clip the "surface" of the sun as you pass by it. Of note, assuming you could fly through the sun, you would never manage to fly through the exact center of the sun using this technique of flying towards it because of your non-zero angular velocity.
@tarrantwolf Жыл бұрын
Ok, first thing we're going to do is try to get to the place that requires the most delta V in the entire system. It'll be easy. And Interns avatar wears a space suit. Shame. lol
@oasntet Жыл бұрын
"And then we end up... back here?" Dude learning that orbits are round. But yeah, if you wanna hit the sun, don't burn towards the sun. Burn in the opposite direction that you are going in, relative to the sun. From the launchpad, that means waiting until sunset and then burning straight up. You'll be reducing your speed relative to the sun (because you have all of that velocity from starting on Kerbin), and if you get that low enough, you'll swoop in and hit it at tremendous velocity. Orbits are weird.

It is important to remember that because kerbin is orbiting around the sun at high speeds if you point towards the sun you will never hit it because of how the vectors average out. What you actually want to do is aim in the opposite direction that kerbin is orbiting, i.e. if kerbin is moving clockwise you want to aim counter-clockwise. This will slow you down relative to the speed of kerbin and ideally, if you have enough delta-V, send you towards the sun. Also the nuclear engines kind of suck in this game so try to avoid using them unless they are essential.
