In order to grow the cities you need to meet the demands of the cities such as meat, grain, wood ect, then the city grows faster and it shows on how fast it grows. As the city grows the demands grow making you more money

Since you ask... i tend to extend a bit my railways straight from the stations both sides so i can place a tower supply that can serve all the lines at once, one for each side and done. And i think you should click on the stars, you need to start some reasearch :)

TIPS!!! Like transport fever, at the stations, especially in the cities you can build out the track a little bit and then put a "criss cross/combiner" for the tracks and the train will figure out what line is free to use. Also make sure to build the tracks side by side when you get closer to the "criss cross/combiner" because you can put a supply tower that connects all of the tracks and by doing that you won't loose any speed in the middle of the journey!!!

Separated trains.. start by connecting max cities and city to city trains.. pax lines will give cash flow..
