The purpose of the senior commodities box is not to be the only source of food but to stretch the existing food. The idea is you will have food stamps (our paltry $23) or another regular food bank haul. It is all explained on the USDA website including why everything has to be shelf stable.

Thanks , I use it to supplement what I have or purchase from the grocery . No Food stamps here I wish I could receive them

Make a pot of those pinto beans and add some of the canned beef. Season with onions and hot sauce. Really hits the spot!

Man that's a hard one could it last a month! Maybe 2 weeks if that. Its a nice little haul to supplement but it would be do hard to live on that alone w/o fresh stuff. You should do a "what if" with some of those items and see if we can get some ideas flowing.
@Sheribail38 ай бұрын
I dont think it last either , Hey thats a great Idea , Ill be gone the weekend but once Im back home Ill do a what if video . Hope you have a great weekend

No, it's not enough for one month, but it helps the budget. Anything helps a food budget these days! It's hard to believe that food prices are STILL increasing...at least here in the north. I feel sorry for the average parent trying to feed their family.

For a while we were housing our grown kids in our house, two of the three families bunked with us. We hit the food banks cos feeding 13 people on food stamps wasn't easy. Those corn flakes you were showing? We seemed to collect a lot of those and not enough milk for eating them. SO. I started crushing them and seasoning them, sometimes with plenty of salt and pepper, but when we had it, I'd also add seasoned salt. If you like the shake and bake stuff to use on meat, this is a good substitute for it, the meat and it can be any kind you prefer, will come out tender and crunchy (kids love that). And since you're doing your own seasoning, you can do it any way your family likes it best. I have seen people use the cheerios cereal seasoned up and used that way, I just always prefered the corn flakes, and we seemed to get more corn flakes than any other cereal. You learn to be creative when you have to take what's on offer, and every week/month what we got would be different. Kicks the creative gene into high gear

what a great idea , I think ill do that and put the ground up flakes in a baggie or mason jar , Thanks for the tips

That's great to strech your food supply. Anything to supplement the pantry. Powered milk is great for baking and making cream soups. It's commodies they know fresh fruit / veggies spoil to fast. This is a great program. With lots of staple foods.

It would never last a month for anybody. I would make what you already have go for a month. The chicken if used for a soup could last for many meals when adding noodles. Add the green beans and carrots to it. 1 pound of pinto beans would easily make 8 meals for me. Or chicken noodle casserole with the veggies and ceese plus the milk. But still no way for a full month
@Sheribail38 ай бұрын
@@NuffinEdited I dont think so either not even for the little frail nibblers lol . ya the beans would make several meals ,that sounds good a chicken noodle casserole

The same place where i get my senior commodity box. Also ANYONE pick up fresh produce on Tuesdays. You just never know what will be avail😂 Yesterday they even had fresh blackberries! I got cucumbers, 5# russet potatoes & a bag of Halos/Cuties tangerines. I didnt need the carrots. You just never know what they'll have❤

I make tacos with it, beef and noodles, beef vegetable soup, just make sure when you open it to drain and rinse it . ITS really good and if nothing else stick it in your pantry for emergency. Have a great weekend
