Her album is a masterpiece. It tells an entire morbid and twisted story and it's breathtaking. Album of the year for me.

Highly recommend also listening to the studio versions. She's amazing live, but some of her production is just masterful and massive - A House in Nebraska, Thoroughfare, and Sun Bleached Flies especially.

Listening now. The reverb/delay on the piano and drums, the harmony vocal. Different feel for sure. Thanks Adam.

Her live stuff is good. But...her recordings are GODLY. Ethel(Hayden) is a songwriting and recording introvert genius. I highly suggest checking out her studio recordings. And....the music videos, which she directs herself. They're very DIY southern gothic. God's Country and Crush and American Teenager are all gorgeous videos. When she says her favorite movie of all time is Thelma & Louis, that makes a lot of sense after you've seen her videos. She captures Southern life on the margins....better than anyone. I live in NE Tennessee....and have never felt truly at home here. But, Ethel's music and entire aesthetic and ethos has really helped me to recontextualize my relationship with the South. I feel way more....at home now.

Great comment avedic. Love the personal touch. If and when I hit up Ethel again, I'll check out one of her videos. Thanks so much.

I agree so much the amount of shock I felt when I found out it's all written and produced by her, under her own label!!

Absolutely love her music. Her lyrics and melodies get stuck in my head for weeks. Some other stand out songs of hers are American Teenager, Crush, and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Thanks for checking out ethel! She’s an incredible live singer… sounds just like the studio version. Glad you deep dived a bit into her lyrics as both of these songs are on her album ‘preachers daughter’ and tell a linear story.

Like yourself I am an old geezer, I believe that they don't write songs like they use to do.....Ethel Chain proves it they write better songs.

Well, proof is a strong word for a subjective medium.

@@wallbangerreactions Proof? Yes , no yes , no, yes, no.....Hayden , demonstrates that are still some very talented song writers who might be more creative than many whose songs I heard when I was young 🙂

Yeah, the piano on the first song sounded like After the Goldrush. She sings a bit like Margo Timmons of the Cowboy Junkies. I like her and will have to check out more of her stuff. Thanks.
@wallbangerreactions2 жыл бұрын
Ethel has more dynamic range than Margo, but, yes, the comparison makes sense. After the Goldrush is exactly the song she evoked with those couple chords. Good to hear from you.

Wow, so grateful to have found your channel just now! I’m 24 and I was raised by my grandparents, so I grew up on the classics, but I have an affinity for modern music, as well. But I know many older folks who reject modern music for simply being modern, so it’s refreshing to see someone so open to discovering new music! Ethel is phenomenal, she’s one of my absolute favorite artists today. I plan on exploring the rest of your videos, so forgive me if you’ve already reacted to them, but I highly recommend Lana Del Rey, Lorde and Greta Van Fleet! They’re each incredible artists with very classic sounds, I think you’d dig them :)
@wallbangerreactions Жыл бұрын
Fairly familiar with all three. GVF I did a reaction. LDR I tried to do a reaction, but hated the video so aborted the project. Lorde I've seen perform on TV and awards ceremonies. I know Bowie liked them. Welcome to the channel BTW>

I'll have to dig through your channel's content.... But I'm curious......have you listened to any Aurora yet? If not....boy are you in for a treat. There's SO MUCH I could and want to recommend. But I'll stick with these.... "It Happened Quiet" live @ The Current...and..."Lucky" live @ Nidarosdomen. Aurora is a musical genius....and hands down my favorite human being currently alive on this planet who isn't a member of my own family.

Put her up on a community poll several months back and, unfortunately, she did not win. But I went back and looked and she tied for second. I might very well do a reaction. Thanks for the recommendation. Standby.

@@wallbangerreactions awesome! 👍 You'll find the Aurora fan community is very kind and cool and loyal. From what I've seen of your channel, having binged a bunch of ur videos tonight, I'm certain you will love her stuff. But def start with those two live songs. Every Aurora fan would agree, those are the two to start with. Thx!!!
