That’s the way I have always gone up and downstairs. My father visited my house (he was 90 then) and he said I should have a second handrail on the other side so he sent me and my mum to buy some wood and he put the handrail up himself! I am so grateful for his thought.

In case anyone wants to know, he sent us to buy a length of 2 inch wide wood and a length of 3 inch wide. He screwed the 2 inch wood to the wall and then he screwed the 3 inch wood to it so that the bottom edge was the same level as the 2 inch and it stuck up 1 inch. I later bought some rounded moulding and glued it to the top of the 3 inch wood so I wouldn’t get splinters.

I have found myself being afraid of the down escalators lately. I always think I’m going to fall and end up taking the elevator. I never had this problem in the past. Is this common with seniors? Any advice to correct this? It’s pretty embarrassing.

Hello. This is a much more common problem than poeple are aware. Our limbic system, where fear comes from, is directly connected to our balance awareness node. So for us to feel "balanced" we can't have increased fear. When you have a fear it truly makes you experience dizziness, just as if your inner ear or vision can. I would highly reccomend you try to work on your balance with balance challenging exercises. You will find many on my channel and more on youtube. If you practice the types of activites that make you struggle to maintain your balance, your fear of falling will certainly decrease and your fear on escalators will also lessen.
