Random fact: that’s Snaresbrook Station where Kenny boards the old 62 stock on the Central line...

OK, it's a bit difficult to recognise some of the musicians under all that '70s hair but here are some names: Kenny Wheeler - fluegelhorn Norma Winstone - voice Stan Sulzmann - baritone sax (he usually plays tenor and soprano) Probably Ray Warleigh - alto sax Dave Horler - valve trombone Chris Laurence - bass Almost certainly Henry Lowther (I think he's the in the blue leather jacket) and Derek Watkins on trumpets ( they all look like Dave Lee Travis to me) Ian Hamer - trumpet Alf Reece - tuba

It’s Ian Hamer rather than Derek Watkins, Henry Lowther and possibly Martin Drover and of course Alan Downey.

No, that is very definitely Heyoke (I found another recording on Spotify). I do wish the BBC would release Kenny's big band sessions.

A few I can add to the ones listed further down. Ray Warleigh, alto. Chris Pine, trombone. Alan Downey, trumpet.

70年代からこういう音だったんだ。素晴らしい。 His big band sound was established in mid 70s. Beautiful.

Believe it or not I remember watching this first time round. In 1977 he looked at first glance like Derek Watkins ... is that Peter Clayton"s voiceover?
@JulianDiaz-Tpt Жыл бұрын
Derek's not on this session. That's Ian Hamer you're probably looking at. Sat next to Alan Downey.

That's right, it's Heyoke from the same album, not Gnu Suite. Great footage, tnx for uploading.

Can Part 2 of this be uploaded again, as it's disappeared? What a fabulous document of the period.

Incredible! Quite funny to hear that the last tune they played is a version of the tune "Hotel Le Hot" from Wheeler's album "The Widow in The Window" which came out in 1990. Even jazz musicians "recycle" their own material...
@deanronson6331 Жыл бұрын
It was wrongly announced as "Heyoke", a first-rate number from the 1975 album Gnu High. This vid is from '77. I provided the link to that tune in another comment here. I just finished listening to everything by Kenny on Spotify and YT, and I don't see "Hotel le Hot" having been released on any other album besides "The Widow". As for recycling, I don't remember any indication of that in any known-author-based genre. It does exist in traditional, anonymous-author music, where a certain song will have a different set of lyrics attached to it at a latter date for various reasons.

Martin Drover (Tpt) on end nearest camera, next to Alan Downey. Derek Watkins doesn't seem to be there.

Martin Drover related to Adrian Drover?- latter would've been with the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra at the time of this recording.

Good band but the lead trumpet in black shirt is the late great Alan Downey, from Manchester, .He played first trumpet with Maynard when Maynard came to live in Stockport UK..Sorry to say Alan passed away a few yrs ago ,he was in great demand in the London studios both as first trumpet and arranger/composer.Derek Watkins isnt there.

@orangefunk Hi... Part 2 of this has disappeared. Could you upload it here or elsewhere?

And the second piece played is indeed Hotel le Hot
@neilloughran605911 жыл бұрын
Hmm... Interesting because Heyoke on Gnu High (ECM record from 1975) is a completely different tune... a waltz in fact.

The pieces are very complex with interrelated themes. The section here is the melody and chords heard about 12 mins 30 seconds into the track on Gnu High I think? kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZXLeYaKrN58mck

Thank you so much for posting this. Are any of the BBC Jazz Club Maida Vale sessions available on disc? And does anyone have the full musician credits for this session?

Where is the second part of the video?
@timpharoah64505 жыл бұрын
Definitely Stan Sulzman on baritone (nearest the camera) and he's thankfully still active. The late Chris Pyne is on trombone - pale blue shirt. Henry Lowther on trumpet furthest from the camera, and what a beautiful solo he plays here.
@orangefunk16 жыл бұрын
yep I think thats Chris Laurence on bass... not sure about Surman...

Hi OFunk, Didn't know you were here! Guess whom I got this vid from? ;-) Thanks for all the music likewise. So have settled in a new place and visited the Mecca or so called Rainbow Studio? ;-) And no, it isn't Heyoke. It is Gnu Suite. A lesson - don't believe the announcements! Do you recognize anyone other than the announced? Is that John Surman? And Chris Lawrence??

How can I get the whole recording of this 'Heyoke', I wonder. It's fascinating.

Yep ! That's bearded "Cockney" Stan Sulzman on sax alright. Wonderful composition, arrangement and horn playing from The Master, Kenny Wheeler - none finer. Great big band - leaves Duke and Count back in the dark ages.
@woodygould4 жыл бұрын
"leaves Duke and Count back in the dark ages" a. Don't think Wheeler would have agreed; he knew who the masters of the form were and (b) did you simply stumble into this extraordinarily racist phrasing, or was it deliberate?
