First Impressions of SENNELIER WATERCOLOURS with the 5 tube set from Billy Showell and Hydrangea botanical painting demo in my watercolour sketchbook.
Hi Guys!
I've always been intrigued to try out Sennelier's Honey based watercolours so join me in today's video where I test them out for the first time! I bought this botanical set from Jackson's a while back and in today's video, I swatch them out, talk a bit about their properties and do a demonstration painting in my watercolour sketchbook! I really enjoyed this one and hope you find it useful if you've ever thought about trying these beautifully vibrant French watercolours for yourself.
Please check out some of my other videos and consider subscribing to my channel for more art videos like this one.
Take care,
Sarah

This is Billy’s extra set meant to be extras to her 12 tube Sennelier Metal set. She also has another small set with split primary in a similar packaging which I think are in the 12 set.

Thank you Ines, I did buy a 12 tube set in a metal tin at the same time I bought these as there was a promotion on at the time, so I will look forward to using them together in future paintings. Take care 😊

According to her comparison to Winsor and Newton pdf color chart she uses 19 colors, the 12 set, the 5 set discussed here, and two other colors Opera Rose from WN and Shin Han Bright Violet from Sennelier incase that is of interest.

Sennelier paints never completely dry in humid climates. Here in Portugal the summers are dry so the paints are normally just tacky to the touch, but the winters are humid and this year especially I had a few paints spread to other pans in my palette or just get the whole thing dirty. So just be careful to not have the palette at an angle and this mostly prevents them from spilling. Also yes that binder separation is normal with a few pigments. I filled a half-pan with Yellow Sophie (gorgeous neutral mid tone yellow that is an exclusive pigment to Sennelier) and it sometimes separates from the binder and so does the Quin Gold but mixing them with a toothpick solves the problem. Even though they can be a bit finicky with how much honey they have there just so smooth to paint with and don't dry as lumps like W&N.

Sketch-a-doodle an option maybe to place them near a dehumidifier after use I live in LEIRIA and it really has been unusually humid

Billy never uses the white in any of her color mixes. It's used only for highlighting and seldom. She uses her Blue Violet only for soft shadowing. PV15 "Ultramarine Violet" in almost any brand can be a bit gummy out of the tube because it's the nature of the single pigment used. She has some free video tutorials on her personal website.

The Blue Violet had quite a bit of binder separation. It happens sometimes and I've heard more with some pigments than others. Usually it should be enough to stir the paint and binder back together really well before commencing paint. It looks lovely! The few Sennelier pro paints I have, I really enjoy.

Really gorgeous. I live in Queenland Australia ( air conditioners on 6 months of the year) and have the primary set of 6 and a few other colours. Most watercolours don't dry completely in my palette and that is for most brand's( I have Sennelier, Schminke W&N professional , W&N Cotman MaimeriBlu, DS, Art Spectrum.) I only use tubes and I don't put out a full section in my palette, I just put out a squeeze or two. I then leave them to dry, they stick to plastic fine and do have a slight tack to them, rewetting tacky paints is not an issue. My paints are in 2 cheap plastic palette from AliExpress no issues there, I also occasionally use a ceramic plate too. If you were talking about really cheap watercolours they are very different and dry rock hard and then fall out, it's like there is no real stick to them. So for me I don't mind the tacky surface at all. Happy painting!

Thank you! I have experienced the same thing with cheap watercolours too so a bit of tackiness isn't a problem! Take care 😊

Lovely painting! Sennelier watercolors are so clean and beautiful for botanicals. Sennelier lightfastness (ASTM standards) I = Very good lightfastness II = Good lightfastness III = Average lightfastness n.r. = not listed All artist grade watercolor brands have occasional binder separation, especially for mineral pigments like cobalts, ultramarines, viridians, etc. You can choose to just pour it off, or mix it back into the tube as other commenters have suggested.

I love sennelier I have the tin of 12 +6 and has my favorite of the burnt sienna's being more orange. the same as schmincke's. it is like painting with butter, i prefer using the pans as my home is quite moist i do not have to worry about running paints like sennelier and m graham. i think your binder on the blue violet has seperated wich i found happens a bit with turquoise and blue green colors using daniel smith though when mixed with a toothpick it was problem solved. You might want to make sure to use a tubewringer on that tube so leftover paint wont stick in the bottom.

@@SarahNewburyArt Really Funny, Lindsay is now teasing me that basicly nothing can hold a candle against my beloved sennelier. She may have a point there hahahahaha,though for botanicals I like both schmincke and sennelier,painting tiny details is kindof a pain for me as a botanical addict with heavy granulating paints. The latter is why a lot of botanical artist mostly pic non granulating paints and both schmincke and sennelier have a huge range of options in that regard. I can tell you that I have one of my white night tins filled only half way with botanical colors I use from schmincke. No one in their right mind should have that many browns and greens. Its hilarious. And that is only like 26 half pans. One full pan I own by schmincke is the May Green. I love that soft green for foliage. My husband was like,"how come that damn thing isn't full yet"... uhh BC I use them... LOL

I think Blue Violet has binder issues. It tend to separate like the Cobalt Blue by Sennelier. But its a nice color over all. Personally, if I get this set I will replace this color with a pigment from another brand.

@@SarahNewburyArt You're welcome! Just make sure you mix the paint with a tooth pick in the tube or in a pan. That could help with the binder that has split.

Thank you so much for this video Sarah! One question: I saw that you used the white paint neat on your test sheet, but at the end of the video when you used the titanium white, did you use it neat on the painting also? It looked like it but I wanted to be sure. I just bought my first Sennelier paints and decided to try the aqua-mini pans to be sure I’d like them. As it turns out, I LOVE THEM! I recently discovered Billy Showell too, and she’s an amazing botanical artist. Thanks also for deciding to paint precise since it reinforced what I’ve already learned. I’m so glad I found your channel. I’ve learned so much from you. You and Billy both use that precise way of painting that I’m striving to learn. Blessings to you!

One of senneliers purks is the layering, they somehow tend to sit a bit more on top of the page making it almost impossible to overwork the page. I found the same quality,though a bit less with white nights, wich reminds me,personally of sennelier.

Thank you for this lovely review and demonstration. Sennelier watercolor really are special. I'm looking forward to your review of the larger Billy Showell set you mention in a comment. Do you plan to create a palette by pouring the tubes into half pans or will you use them directly from the tube?
@SarahNewburyArt
@SarahNewburyArt 4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you! I haven't decided yet if I will continue to use them fresh out of the tubes or whether to create a palette. I did buy a palette with the idea of putting together all my new colours but it's so hard to choose which brands and colours to include so I guess I'll have to spend a bit more time figuring it out! 😊

The Art Hive Thanks for responding. For myself, I tend to make palettes that focus on a single brand. They seem to work better for me that way. I do like using the paint fresh from the tubes when I'm working on something larger. I use the tube paint dried into half pans when I have small areas to work on or limited time. Billy Showell keeps a porcelain palette with all her colors on it; it's an interesting setup if one has the space on the art table.

As for staining, Billy Showell actually does a lot of lifting in her botanical art. I do think some of the colors in her paint set are staining or semi-staining, and some of them are not at all. I don't know that I've seen this information for Sennelier even in the big brochure they produce.
@SarahNewburyArt

I really need to look at her website- as someone else suggested in a previous comment- as I'm really interested to learn more about painting botanical art and see how other more experienced artists use their watercolours! There wasn't much info contained in the set I bought so a bit more investigation is needed I think! 😊

I have a 24 half-pan set but I rarely ever reach for them. I don’t know why because the colors are gorgeous. My go to is my M Graham/D.S./ Mijello paints which are in a palette with wells instead of half-pans. Maybe thats why? I really don’t know.

Well I like them both - Sennelier colours are so bright -and beautiful to paint with but because they are formulated with honey, they aren't as practical as Winsor and Newton for taking out and about. Winsor and Newton are also a lot easier to get hold of living in the UK, but both are lovely 😊

Apparently botanical watercolour painters use white all the time. I took a class with a woman who was a botanical painter and she used white all the time, often dropping it into wet areas. I have little experience with it myself.

This is my experience as well: white watercolor, both transparent and opaque, are used for botanical art. And, since this is the 'extra colors' set, it is not surprising there is a tube of white here.

That's too much binder ,I don't mix it in ,if possible put it back in the tube, than gently massage the tube,the binder does leave a high gloss, if one likes the high gloss just use more gum arabi with the pigments ,lovely painting.
