I spent hours listening to both before I decided on the HD 800S and for most reasons provided here. I think this review is valid and honest.

Cool review! It is not easy to compare headphones and describe it in words - well done! I owned the HD800S and sold them. I missed the rumble of bass too much. And then i got the Sony Z1R, headphones most people passionately hate. I’d not trade them for the hd820, although the latter are for sure more refined. But the z1r has a huge bass coming out of huge drivers. Also great for gaming, Bass impact and a decent soundstage.

Having tried almost every high-end headphone on the market, I must say the HD 820s are really good, but they must be paired with a good amp and they have a very long burn-in time. They sound pretty dull right out of the box, but after 150 hours, they really open up IMO. I use them with a Violectric. Great match.

I’ve always found the Sennheiser over ear headphones with open back to have a more open & natural sound with much better sound staging & detail. Personally I always found closed back headphones to be a tad bass heavy. Though I’ve only auditioned closed back headphones up to the £300-£400 & that was 20 years ago lol. Whereas I had a pair of open back Sennheiser HD600 which finally but sadly died a few years ago 😥

Kudos for referencing TH900. And there's only one difference between balanced and single ended outs on certain amps balanced yields higher voltage thus volume levels which may be important to 600ohm phones or create placebo effect due to different volume levels at same knob volume knob position. Balanced is basically all about noise on long distances and unless you live close to military base with brutal radars and other radio systems that can cause interference, single ended is gtg and inaudible by trained ears let alone standard grade audiophile. HD820 doesn't isolate good enough for airplane usage, so HD800S was obvious winner for me. Time goes and I surprisingly find them having more ear time than my No1 for many years - TH900. Tho they need little low end push from EQ.

I am trying to decide which ones to buy 800s or 820 for electronic music production....can you tell me a little bit more regarding my need that might help me with the decision? Mind that I do need isolation, it is crucial to me, and that I need precision in sound and space for all envelope adjustments, panning etc.

I'm not a gamer so I got curious--is there any way to EQ-in some bass to a typical gaming setup? The HD 800S, even better the original HD800, plays really well with EQ and so it may be one route to consider, if EQ'ing is even possible in gaming rig.
@TotallydubbedHD5 жыл бұрын
@@robovirtuoso1354 of course you could, but EQs can be a little faffy with games
@JSym925 жыл бұрын
Download EqualizerAPO and configure the Harman AE/OE target EQ's which you can find here: www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index No reason to pay $800 more for something with a more pleasant out-of-the-box frequency response, when you can just EQ the to fix that. The lacking soundstage and imaging capabilities of the 820 can't be fixed with EQ'ing, but the missing bass on the 800 S can..

@@TotallydubbedHD Say, hypothetically if i want to have a portable studio, and mix and master complete in the box (via plug ins) which of these would be better, the opened back 800s or the closed back 820? I know that we can not mix solely on headphones due to crosstalk, and that both speakers and headphones are required, in addition to referencing on multiple devices, and locations, BUT say i want to do the most accurate mix at home, where i dont want to treat my room etc, which would be better, im guessing the HD 800S since they're open back.
