@machinephile5 жыл бұрын
well, that's kinda inaccurate. Most audio hardware the studios use for commercial production are not that high-end as you would think they are. Since their product is for general consumer's listening, it's unnecessary to use super high-end headphones to edit and tune specific frequencies since consumer market won't use those audio setups anyway and on top of that, they also have to keep their cost in mind. They are essentially business who will have to make as much profit as possible so using high-end audio gear is not a good option.

BTW: I'm an audio developer, working on perceptual coding atm.. I'm pretty sure most modern codecs can sound transparent at high enough bitrates on any sound reproduction system. They've been makin' high-end audio equipment for audio professionals for 75 years now, and at least a few of their products are priced lower than the current Airpods Max. It's hard to describe the way that high-res audio played over high-end equipment sounds to non-audiophiles, but it is definitely more of an experience than you would expect. So much more detail - it's like finding little treasures in songs that you've heard hundreds of times. Most people don't take the time to enjoy quality audio in the same way that they would watch high-res video on a $2-3,000 TV, and it is hard for many people to consider spending the same amount for an amazing pair of headphones (and an appropriate DAC/amp for them). nah, it's just different master produce different quality. it's no use getting over 44.1/16, all you get is supersonic sound you can't hear (according to nyquist theorem). The dynamic range in mastering plays more important role (as in studio master these days compressed the dynamic range to make their music loud) not bit depth because to achieve the full dynamic range of 16 bit, you would have to crank up the volume till you become uncomfortable. However I won't deny that Hi-res in recording and mastering is completely relevant but as a delivery format? not so relevant. Think of it like watching a 4K HDR TV, Which is more noticeable? 1440p vs 2160p or HDR vs Non-HDR? It seems like streaming service like tidal uses different master for their track when you choose master quality as opposed to Hi-Fi and they credit the improved sound quality to hi-res.
@bighands695 жыл бұрын
High Res audio is nonsense. Even CD is more than what 99.99% of the population need in terms of quality. Maybe some super human genetic freak with an IQ of 150 plus, hearing range of a bat and has trained as a musician and sound engineer would actually hear to the fullest extent CD's.
@Speed_75455 жыл бұрын
@@bighands69 quite alot of audiophiles can tell the difference in blind-testing different files.. 24bit/196khz sounds better than 16bit/96khz. The former one simply has more resolution, so more detail/better controlled sound/soundstage etc. BUT you can only hear these differences using proper headphones which have good detail retrieval with a quality dac/amp-or-IEM's with a solid dap or amp/dac. Then there is also 32bit/384khz which has an even higher resolution than FLAC, now this requires even better headphones to notice the differences in quality. Most audiophiles are happy with FLAC's since they don't take up much space and the difference they notice compared to DSD isn't worth the extra space an DSD-file requires.

Btw, if you've not listened to Purple Rain (in particular, When Doves Cry) on a nice set of headphones, you should. That dude was a ridiculous perfectionist in his mastering and the soundstage on that album is nuts, especially considering it was all done on an analog console.
@bpelectric5 жыл бұрын
Also, 'Kiss' is a completely different song from what you're used to hearing on the radio when you get it from a clean source on nice headphones. I can barely think of another song that is mastered across the range from silence to dance-floor banger. There's actually a couple of instruments in that I didn't even know were in that song until the first time I heard it on some nice, balanced, recording-monitor level headphones.

Worth giving anything on the Earth Wind & Fire greatest hits album a listen as well. All their classics have production through the roof. Tons of sound stage and instruments you won't pick up without a decent headphone, and they just sound better the fancier the rig.

I own the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Edition, you can get them for half the original price already. The reason being the "Pro" lineup of the 880's, those were originally 130€ cheaper(170 vs ~300) BUT had nearly the same sound quality. The same goes for the 770 and 990, which all have the same drivers i belive, but are differently constucted(770/880/990/ closed/semi-open/open). Pound for pound, those have been one of the best you could get, especially with the "Pro's". I have a friend that spents a lot of money for audio, he got himself the Beyers T1 two years ago. If my budget would allow it, I would definitely buy these. However, you can't simply just buy these headphones and plug them into your phone. It requires a good headphone amp as well. Also, it always fascinates me when people can't believe that others are willing to spend this amount on a great pair of headphones, but a good OLED TV for that price is perceived to be a legitimate expense. As a producer, I mix with Yammie NS-10M's and then check headphones (and I often mixed first with headphones), I use the HD820's and Grado RS2E's. 90% of listening is now done with headphones, so mixing must be directed that way. The 820's do not artificially produce a soundstage, they let the real soundstage come through . SO if it sounds good on the 820's and RS2E's, it will never sound bad in less phase-coherent , cheap heaphones. Great review BTW!

This is true for anything audiophile. Getting good equipment WILL change your taste in music. You will stop listening to music you like and will search for well mastered songs. It's a crying shame that a vast majority of labels don't put the proper time into really mastering their music. Most of the most emotional songs I know aren't recorded properly and it hurts to know that it'll only be getting worse.

Sound engineers normally mix music to sound good across all systems. Often engineers will play music through car speakers and other mid devices since most people will use that and they tune music to reflect that. Sucks for audiophiles but that typically is the best for most people which is why it happens.

I got my HD800 in the first batch that came out in May 2009 (SN00660) and love them, although they are quite picky about what amp you drive them with. And aftermarket cables really take the sound to the next level, after you settle on the best DAC and amp 1st. Last September I upgraded to the HD800s and my son bought my original pair for $595, with new earpads that cost me about $80 shipped - some people spend less on their entire headphone!

Audiophiles in the community describe the experience of listening to these headphones comparable to listening to music in a bathroom. After spending countless months researching amps, dacs, headphones and all the lovely in between. Here is what I understand about this high fidelity audio game. There is an endless array of DAC's and Amps and DAC/AMP combo's, headphones/speakers and of course high end audio cables. Let's not forget aftermarket ear pads for those headphones if they are on ear or over ears. Oh yeah, ears, we all have different ears, which hear different things, cause of course we are all unique individuals, with individual cochleas. Add to that the genre of music you listen to, and what is the recording quality of the music and source as well. Sprinkled with a little placebo effect and industry marketing gimmicks. I'll take some DSD with a side of LSD please. When I think about all this, I have to take a deep breath and collect myself because you can start to get a little crazy with all of this. Little crazy?! No full on head spinning exorcist crazy. You do realize, this is an exorbitant amount of possibilities and to be able to find the perfect setup is like finding..well I think you get the point I am trying to make. It's an endless game for the "end game" and worse of all, a giant money/time pit, sinking thousands upon thousands of dollars and research hours trying to find what they call the "end game" setup, except for there really is no "end game". It just keeps going on and on in perpetuity as audio technology advances every year. Let's also not forget that most of the time you will be watching videos or reading forums about this stuff, you can't actually listen to it and try it on before you buy it like you do with other really expensive things. So either be very rich and have the ability to spend $50,000-$100,000++ to have multiple variations of all these audio components so you can mix and match and try them all out or be an audio reviewer where gear is lent to listen and test until you find the perfect setup or multiple setups because it's like wine, you don't just drink one kind, you should have a wine cellar for all those bottles. Well then, I guess that sums it up for me, anyone else want to chime in please do. I am not an audiophile, just a guy that likes better audio quality than average. So I would say I fit somewhere in the middle? My current listening pleasure for the past 3 years or so is a pair of Sennheiser HD600's, bone stock with no customizations, with a Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100, and a DarkVoice 336SE tube amp, using my Mac Pro and listening to mp3's ranging from 192 kbs to 320 kbs on iTunes, sometimes FLAC audio files through VOX, some Tidal/Spotify. The entire audio part of the setup cost me around $700 and believe me when I say that I am SO very satisfied with the sound quality, that I can't imagine spending hundreds or thousands more to get something else, but like I said, we are all different. This setup might be a joke for another audiophile. I see it as a tunnel without an ending. There is always something better, so if you seek it, it will find you..and your wallet. (Sorry for my long rant, but I had a lot to say!) Edit: I just realized I really AM an audiophile, I just don't want to spend the kind of money to BE an audiophile. I achieved a level of happiness with my current setup and I put a stop right there. Because I very quickly found myself looking up more headphones, and more amps/dacs. Becoming addicted to this is extraordinarily easy. You forget the whole reason you started was to just listen to your music in higher quality, but then it quickly becomes something else.

There's a ton of placebo and superstition in the audiophile community for sure. I've personally found the the difference between amps to be neglegible, different cables make no difference whatsoever in sound, lossless feels like a gimmick no matter what I'm using to listen to it, and the main deciding factor with sound comes from using different headphones.

As far as I know, the concave glass not only reflects the sound but also spreads it evenly to prevent the echoing problem of closed back headphones.

I once bought a headphone worth around 4500 rupees ($64) and to this day I regret it, because I thought I shouldn't have spent that much money on a headphone 😂.

I've had these for about 6 months and it's kinda crazy how well they're made. I hope they never break (because a cheapo replacement cable is 140€) and the sound just becomes your normal. It's wild.
