Hi! You needn't be shocked at the low number of reviews of this headphone. That's a consequence of an unbelievable number of 'reviewers' who endlessly recycle each other's comments and very rarely add a comment of value or relevance. It is simply hilarious how some of them even have the nerve to say something that costs a thousand dollars or euros is 'a good value'. The term 'diminishing returns' has been misused and abused a million times over but what most people don't realise is just how quickly that law 'kicks in'. That's why I congratulate you, Sir, for speaking your mind, without false pretence. I may not always agree with you but I appreciate your input. Cheers!

I saw a bunch of reviews and I appreciate your work. The only thing I cannot understand is how you talk about the hd 560s. The build quality is better than the HD 400s. Here in Germany we have different "plastics" but we call it Kunststoff and it is in no way cheap made. The hd 560s will hold many years and it's a serious competitor in that price range. Had many headphones and many high end headphones and the hd 560s doesn't have to shame. That's my opinion. But I enjoy your work and I will continue to look up to your channel 😉 Greetings from Germany 🍻👍

I know this is a fairly old video, but your review is by far the most compreheensive I could find. I loved how objective you were and how you provide tracks we can check ourselves to tell how they fare with headphones we might already use, like or dislike. If this isn't too much to ask, how do you think this headphone would work for people looking for an on-ear, at home, guitar recording monitor piece? For comparison, I have been using an AKG k92 for several years now, it has served me well, but its time has come. Thanks in advance!

I just brought my set and decided to look them up but honestly coming from a pair of wired beats that are atleast 8 years old, require charging without having Bluetooth, will randomly stop working and are straight up falling apart I was happy to have a full comfortable set of headphones that don’t feel cheap or worn that I barely notice and don’t threaten to hurt my ears, do they feel like ones I’ve tested no but they feel how I want them to comfortable, well made and good sound quality I’d also like to say that in comparison to not only my old beats but also a low tier rgb gaming headset I have for my pc the sound is so much better

Thank you for the review! I just bought this headphone for as cheap as US$ 58 here in Indonesia. A pretty good deal, I must say. A nice build quality, but I don't really like how it sounds. It's... kinda "wide" sound. I can't find the exact word to describe it, but turns out it's not my favorite. I had an old Sennheiser PX 100 collapsible headphone and I thought I would get the similar sound quality, but I was wrong. I prefer my old headphone to this one.

These were my first pair of "proper" high fidelity headphones 4 years ago, and they served me very well till I got the Hifiman HE400se. I'm glad they're given some love here, because honestly I believe these to be the only sub 100$ headphones that are worth getting, all the way up to the 120$ that the HE400se are priced at. They're just good all-around, though I have to disagree on the bass with these. It's very muddy and bloated IMO, and just over-all excessive. If they dialed it back just a bit, I think they would be over-all far more satisfying to listen to. At the same time though, for me it's the fact that they have such big stinky bass without sacrificing clarity too much makes them actually fun to listen to despite the fact that I've moved on to better headphones. They're not like Sony's wh1000 xm-4s, which just sound disgustingly muffled and ugly. I haven't listened to the 560s yet, and I've had my reservations about them, but if they really aren't that much better than these, for 200$, that would be really disappointing...

Many reviews I've seen agree with your summation of the HD 560s regarding build quality and barebones accessories, but they often differ regarding sound quality. Most reviews I've seen highly praise its sound quality, saying it has a flat frequency response for mixing and production, precise imaging and separation, good bass extension, and decent sound staging, keeping harmonic resonation intact. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am curious to know why you don't rate the sound quality of the 560s? I would really appreciate your input as you might save me some money.

I've owned the 400s for a year and I agree with everything regarding the bass, mids and treble, but I disagree with the rest of the review Comfort The average guy will find the headband padding to be hard but would not be uncomfortable , but if you know you are sensitive to pressure on your head please avoid these headphones at all costs. there is no padding, 2 millimeters of rubber isn't padding. Sennheiser advertise this headphone as over ear, but the pads are a little bit small for a normal ear, so for most people they would be on ear, but my ears are just the right shape so I could wear them as over ear, and they were ok, the had a snug fit. The clamping force on these are insane, even more than the other sennheiser , but in a couple of weeks it becomes more comfortable. I don't know about you but these headphones made me sweat, they get pretty hot. Detail Like you said, this headphone is not detail oriented, but I would take it further and say that its a little bit below average on detail and would definitely not say that they sit in good company with the 6xx. i don't have other 70 dollars headphones to compare them to, but I have 40 dollar earbuds from sennheiser, the cx 300 ii. I know its not right to compare headphones to earbuds, but the whole point of the review is value, so I would consider it as a somewhat fair comparison. Comparing them ONLY on detail, I would say that the 400s is just a tiny, tiny bit more detailed than the earbuds, but the earbuds have better instrument separation. THE 400S ISN'T MUFFLED, but don't buy these for detail retrieval/critical listening. soundstage these headphones have a narrow soundstage, this is expected because they are closed back, but they are definitely narrower than the 6xx. in conclusion buy these if you are tired of the 30 dollar super v shaped headphones. the 400s at this price range regarding detail and soundstage are better than those "commercial" headphones, and will give you a taste of that balanced sound that more expensive headphones have. but you would most likely be disappointed by the comfort. if you want even more value, you should look into earbuds or IEM's obviously this is my opinion, and I don't have a protocol for reviewing things like No Theme reviews , this is by feel and experience.

Hey man. Just discovered your channel and really enjoy it. Thinking of getting a high end closed back headphone. What’s your thoughts on the focal stellia and dan Clark ether closed?
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Those two are very different headphones. If you listen to both, I think you'd be surprised by how dissimilar they are in nearly every way. The Stellia has more bass, smoother and more full mids (particularly female vocals), and a well-extended but not fatiguing treble. The Ether Closed is more bass-neutral, though I think sub-bass is a bit rolled-off. The mids are close to neutral, but female sibilance might be harsh to some; the treble is a bit emphasized and sparkly. The build is different as well. The Stellia is sturdy and I think comfortable. The Ether is probably more comfortable because of the lighter weight, but the build is a bit shaky. The headband adjustment is two plastic parts screwed together, and that is supposed slide up and down. Mine has lost all tension and I have to keep the headband in place using Scotch tape. That's rather disappointing considering the cost--and DC's customer service wasn't any help. I think both headphones sound fine, if you know what you want. I personally don't use the Ether as often as the Stellia, merely because I think the Stellia is easier on my ears and warmer sounding. The Ether can be a bit cold and analytical, but of course your source and music is always a factor. The price difference is pretty stark. I will say one thing about customer service: DC is far better about returning messages and giving answers (although they wouldn't take my headphone back to fix the headband, but that's probably because I didn't push hard enough). But Focal's US customer service is atrocious. I've emailed them at least 6 times about an issue I have with my Utopia, and they've never responded. Hope this helps.

@@NoThemeReviews thanks for a detailed reply. Reading that I’m not sure if either would fit the Bill. I might get a hd800s for my open classical listening and then something cheaper for closed back portable listening. Is the Shure 1540 a good option in that regard or can you think of better?
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 3 жыл бұрын
@@garygriffiths7353 I think the 1540 is an excellent headphone, especially for classic and orchestral music. Depending on the sound signature you want, there are other options: Amiron Home (sparkly and trebly headphone, so be mindful); Ollo S4R (neutral, but may not be exciting to your ears); Denon D7200; and HD569. You may also want to research the Austrian Audio Hi-x55; it's bass light, but it has a lot of detail and resolution in exchange. Unfortunately, there are more options for open-back than closed-back.

@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Lol I have no idea what would blow you away! But you can find many headphones that fit that description for much less than $1k. Surprisingly, the VModa M100 Master does have thumpy bass without muddiness; it’s not aggressively v-shaped so it’s fairly easy to listen to IMO. The Meze 99 Classic is also pretty close to what you describe but details aren’t its strong point. The Audioquest Nighthawk is warm, bassy, but has a sibilance spike that might be an issue, but the treble is fairly neutral. The ATH WS1100is might be worth looking at. It’s got a fairly hard hitting mid-bass, clear mids, and slightly accentuated treble. The HD6xx might be worth considering; people say it’s neutral, but I disagree. It’s got a mids push that takes it easily out of neutral territory. But it is warm sounding and has a thick bass, though not boomy or elevated. I’m sure there are lots of other options but these jump out to me at the moment.

Am I getting this right it is better than hd560s? cause it sounds like it in the review cause I had bought the hd400s prior to knowing that hd560s I really wanted to know if I should stick to this one or upgrade again. Then again I don't have an amp to use the full capability of hd560s. Also what does the hd560s do better than the hd400s? also most detailed review ever this is how everyone should review cans thanks for the review like seriously you said it yourself not a ton out there. Also yes your review is pretty true and valid I'm hearing things I never heard before with this but also the bass is a bit quiet yes pretty much I agree with everything but one thing Sennheiser did market this as over-ear right I think they did.
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'd say one is better than the other, just different. There are a few key points. 1. Sennheiser makes some very specific claims about the 560s (as do some reviewers), and nearly nothing about the 400s. 2. The vast majority of the 560s' claims are false. Its bass response is no more robust than other open-back headphones at cheaper prices. Its sub-bass roll-off is an immediate giveaway that the headphone lacks the robust bass that it is promised to have. The female sibilance can become piercing, especially at high volumes. The vocal-forward presentation may be suitable for some genres, but probably not all. The soundstage is about average. Detail retrieval is average at best. 3. The 400s has a sub-bass roll-off and mid-bass bump, but I'd say that the 560s is MARGINALLY clearer in the bass. Vocals are forward, as with the 560s, but not as sibilant or piercing. Decay is more natural on the 400s. The 400s provides as much detail as the 560s, and a bit less soundstage than the 560s. 4. The build quality is far more appropriate for the 400s' price tag. The 560s has somewhat flimsy, light, hollow-feeling plastic. Its larger earpads allow for more comfortable fit than the 400s, but the 560s also has a very tight clamp. 5. The 400s comes with a bag and a reasonably long cable. The 560s comes with no protective bag and comes with one incredibly long, cheap-feeling cable. Sennheiser was so cheap in this regard that it didn't even include a simple 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter, but instead one of the older adapter cables--which is just another chunk of cable you have to attach to an already long cable. In short, the sound signatures are different enough to say they aren't copies. But there's a lot more involved in the calculus. IMO, the 560s is one of Sennheiser's worst cash-grab operations. It's a wonder that YT reviewers haven't actually compared it against the 6xx or any other Sennheiser headphone--and I suppose that's why they keep saying the 560s is such a good bargain. When you don't compare, everything seems great. Anyway, I sold my 560s this week, and I'm not the least bit sorry about getting rid of it.

@@NoThemeReviews thats so savage you had sell it😆😆 I get now but also i feel like you can adjust bass quality with the fit of your head its awfully weird the fit of 400s sometimes bass can be really good if you adjust it well sometimes its gone I think you right you just cured my FOMO right there maybe I should save up buy a 2nd hand 600s or 660s oh as you said in that second statement i hate ear piercing siblance its fine if its a little siblant but ear piercing Yeah i guess this why most people hate vocals or midrange thats why they Buy V shaped cans.I also am sorry I forgot to tell you I also saw your 560s review so i kinda got what your claims are in 3 and 4 still awesome that review by the way you gave sennheiser a proper lesson hope they watched it. Can you say you could consider this like a very budget audiophile like experience the 400s? Cause not everyone can afford expensive gear i mean mostly not right now. I’m also very curious about how you think of those 2 main consumer brands or oh wait no lets make it 3 like Sony,Bose,JBL?as I wanted to binge watch your content and mostly I didnt know the brand of this other cans. Or better yet can you confirm for me that the bose sounds too slow and sony also sound fast and energetic and sounds more natural than the bose but bose is better at detail but also a bit harsh which would you prefer out of these and why? I only saw that one sony headphone that you reviewed that got me excited like you had high praises for it having big soundstage than its other competitors at that price point also love how sony’s timbre is very very natural somehow than other headphone but isnt that detailed except for that studio monitor that engineers use i guess. Well thanks again I ain’t sure if your gonna reply again to this but really really good stuff in here maybe before i dive in to your videos and dont know the brand i should just reasearch a bit.

@@ignisulfr I think Sony and Bose try to provide a more fun-sounding bass. But they both accentuate sibilance and treble--at least in their Bluetooth headphones. I've only heard JBL headphones occasionally and am not a fan. Their bass is typically muddy, boomy, and mids are recessed. JBL is not much different from the Beats sound. I don't have a particular definition for the word "audiophile." IMO, "audiophile" is not a specific sound signature. So, I think you can enjoy music with any headphone, whether or not it has a hi-res sticker or the word "audiophile" attached to it. However, to answer your questions bout the 400s, I'd say that it is a good headphone which does capture the general Sennheiser sound signature. There are plenty of audiophiles who hate Sennheiser, and many who love it. So, it'll be up to you to decide if the 400s sounds good to you. I don't really know how much you want to spend, but there are several options. Take a look at the AKG K361 and K371; OneOdio Studio Headphones; Monoprice HR5; Philips L2 and M1 Mk2; Koss Porta Pro and KPH30i; JVC HA-RX700 and RX900; and MDR-MA100. These are all good options for $150 and less. I don't really have a top brand. I judge gear one at a time, and I don't want to become a bullhorn for a brand. But, so far, I can say that a few brands have released very good products that I continually praise: Avantone, Ollo Audio, Base Audio, and Philips. You'd be surprised how many good options there are. Research is the best approach.

@@NoThemeReviews your quite different from others who always want that flat and accurate sound so you tend to judge bass if it is enjoyable for you like a preference basis oh yeah philips had those back and the day the only negative stuff i can say for philips is they may break easily but usually sound really good wait jvc has audio equipment i thought they were a television company. So would you say you can enjoy studio reference cans?yes i do know most hate the veiled sound that sennheiser has thank God not here in hd400s right yes i recall you said it yourself. I also hear about dt 770 pro from beyerdynamic but i see a lot people complain about harshness yes i am sensitive to harshness in most headphones that probably why i hate bose can’t listen for even 30 mins. I think the ear shape and genetics also has some effect on your preference for sound but those who are open minded like your reviews make audio intruiging and fun by the way I listened to the songs you includ in your review oh man I’ve been missing detail for all my life it had me appreciate good detailed headphones without being harsh oh man if you reviewed soundbars i’d be watching it over and over cause nobody has reviewed soundbars like how you could review a headphone i have a polk magnifi max sr i’m curious of how you would review it just musically not for cinema watching but of course i watch reviews really for affirmation and information usually i already have those equipment when i watch reviews but i never agreed too much to any review not as much as yours most reviews are 70% right yours is 99% thanks for helping out i would upgrade down the line but im still enjoying hd400s i would imagine its more fun than hd560s you still have your hd400s right? Right i also remember the thing that i only hate about sony is most of the time their headphones has bad instrument separation its not too muddy but not separated enough thats a positive trait about bose which i hear and distinguish the different instruments in different spaces is that called stereo separation? Or is it just because usually sony is a bit muddy in the mids well not as bad as jbl. You know how stupid i was also i thought back then that good treble always had to be sharp and a bit piercing im still learning as much as i can and i was wrong how beautiful hd400s treble is i could even sleep with it.thanks for the recommendations again hope you do more hidden gems like the hd400s and that sony review that was 40 bucks and i was like waoh seriously sadly cant find those anymore but happy anyways with hd400.

I've never heard the M40x, so I can't say one way or another. From my understanding from the multitude of reviews of the 40x, however, I'd have to think that the 400s sounds nothing like the 40x. If that's the case (and if you have the 40x, then you'd know better than me, obviously), then the question is whether you're interested in a balanced sound signature. I wish I could be more help, but I really can't directly answer your question.

@Sonal PEIRIS yep. i definitely find the m40s to be much clearer, more natural and detailed. 400s even after burn-in/much listening have weird sounding vocals. There is also a treble peak thats not really possible to eq. What i can say after listening to the 400s is that m40x really have roll-of in bass. The 400s definitely reach further down and have a better kick. But when listening i find the bass in m40 generally better fitting in the whole tonality than the 400s. Soundwise i would definitely prefer the m40x. But i needed portable headphones in the first place. The 400s have decent passive noise-canceling, are foldable and seem to be robust. Plus they have a mic and control. To be honest the mic isnt the best especially in wind and the button often misinterprets my input but better than nothing.
