If you live near Hanover, Germany, you coud theoretically listen to these headphones every day, because they are displayed at the Sennheiser Flagship Store (connected to their production facilities) in a seperate room. And if you kindly ask the staff, they let you in, leave you alone with a bunch of CDs and/or your mobile phone. And if you're lucky enough and the store isn't crowded, they even don't ask you to leave. Well, I listened to this very pair of headphones, my first song was (if I remember correctly) Ride Across The River by Dire Straits and yes: those headphones cost you as much as pretty well configured Volkswagen Passat, but they are worth every penny. The sound quality is so outstanding and astonishing, you can barely describe what you hear to someone just in words. So, if you live near Hanover, like I do, take a half day off, drive to the Wedemark and take a chance to listen to these masterpieces. I absolutely recommend. Edit: For all who are planning trips to Hanover now: Sennheiser unfortunately closed their flagship store due to the sellout of their customer headphone division. The pair of HE1 travels around now and is displayed at different HiFi-studios across the country.

My friend worked for Sennheiser and I got to try these out at a listening event. They had a bunch of pre-selected songs on tidal lossless. Him being awesome, let me chose any song I wanted and I chose introducing palace players by Mew, which I've listened to hundreds of times of decent headphones. It was like hearing it for the first time. Instruments were separated, but still somehow fit together. I could hear perfect detail on any element of the song I wanted to focus on. I spent the next few weeks genuinely depressed knowing how good music could sound, and how I'd likely never experience again because i couldn't afford 100k for headphones. Anywho, these headphones really are as good as they say they are.

As a professional classical musician/instrumentalist, the headphones that I always go back to after trying out something new is the HD599. Somehow the slight warmth they have in their sound gives me a very cozy feeling. But well - I'm a german brass player, so of course I love warm sound with open style over-ear headphones. @@sbichson The best way to describe it, is that a lot of headphones have "grain" which cannot be fixed with tuning or really anything you play through them, which causes certain sounds to have miniscule or even large differences between frequencies. For example 569 hertz being disproportionately louder then 572 hertz. Or frequencies of sound being distorted into frequencies that they are not. Its the difference between printing up an image on a normal printer versus a pantone validated professional graphics printer. I recognize one of the differences between the original track and the HE1. I played around a lot with matrix surround in the '80s. One of the things that I tried was putting variable filters on the ground line so that I could alter the difference between the left and right channels separately from the sum of the channels. It sounds to me like the high frequency difference signal has a few db of gain. Not a lot, but it is there. You can not do much this way without destroying the soundstage, but just a little can open up a recording. I used a pair of isolation transformers and some breadboard. I never did find something I wanted to make permanent because no matter what I did, something suffered. I mostly wound up using it in line when dubbing between LP's and cassette to play either over headphones or in the car. I could get something that I liked on one song no problem. Sometimes I could get something that sounded good on an entire album, but nothing sounded good on everything. I wonder if there's any logic in the electronics on those headphones to switch or alter that effect depending on the music. I was thinking of such things but I lacked any equipment that could implement such a thing at the time.
@jdrissel Жыл бұрын
Listening in further I'm actually surprised that I could hear the difference between these headphones - especially given that what I'm listening to on is considerably less expensive. @CockatooDude Жыл бұрын
Soundstage of headphones is not that wide if the sound is not tampered with. To get the wide soundstage you hear with certain headphones, they are introducing artifacts not present in the original recording. Some like it, some don't, I'm not here to debate whether it's good or not, but technically it isn't accurate.

I found the 2 samples were at different amplitudes. The black pair were alot louder, brighter. I listened again and turned the volume up when the HE-1 played for a better comparison.

Truly amazing. Your video was amazing, I did try the HE-1 at canjam. And I absolutely agree with you to me it sounds like hybrid between the hd6xx and the hd660s, a little closer to the hd660s, but I guess you didn't have it at the time you listened to the HE-1. But your observations were spot on. When I used to compare the hd6xx and 660s to the HE-1 people were like no no comparison. Well it has better technicalities throughout the entire audio spectrum, details, imaging, etc. Again I absolutely loved this video and DMS is such a jerk LoL 🤣🤣🤣.

Haha! I’m so glad you enjoyed it and that I was able to represent it well. It was a fun video to make all around. When I pointed out the HE-1 being similar to the 600 series he said it makes sense since it has a similar cup shape and stuff. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Much appreciated. Feel free to share if you have a chance!

I admire a desire to manufacture a holy grail device to hear music as it was intended. I recently got a pair of Focal headphones that also took my listening experience to a entirely different level from anything I'd heard before. I was blessed with a golden ear with perfect pitch having sold high end audio gear in the 70's and 80's and now have recording studios. It would indeed be interesting to hear such a remarkable set of headphones.

You can't go wrong with Hans Zimmer Mountains would be my top pick but Cornfield Chase, Day One, Chevaliers De Sangreal, Now We Are Free, Time and Dream Is Collapsing are all masterpieces in their own right. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. Disturbed's cover of The Sound Of Silence. And finally Acid Rain by Avenged Sevenfold since it's probably my favorite song. All of these headsets sounded stellar tho, if I was a lotto winner I would try my best to get an HE-1

That Hannah Parrot song is really wonderful. I had forgotten the name of the song soon after it started, but as I listened to it, I was imagining flying through a beautiful, grassy canyon. Only after it was over did I go back and read the name of the song. I was blown away at how well she captured the feeling of flying. I can only dream about what you felt listening to it through those beauties. I'm totally putting these on my Christmas list.

I've been rocking a Sennheiser PC 373D for my gaming PC's for years now. Absolutely love them. I grew up on Sennheiser from my dad who is an audiophile and musician. Sennheiser is probably one of my favorite brands ever across all commercial markets. I couldn't even imagine getting to experience something like the HE-1. First song I would listen to on them would probably be Playing God by Polyphia. I would definitely have to throw on some Epica, I Built The Sky, Unleash The Archers, and then some Norah Jones or Harry Connick Jr to mix up the genres

#41 by Dave Matthews Band or Wicked Game by Chris Isaak are two off the top of my head. Disturbed's Live version of Sound of Silence would be good to hear if the audio is mastered properly. I have grown up in the Hi-Fi industry and when it comes to headphones, the best that I can do is the Focal Utopia which are extremely nice headphones but I am sure do not compare to these.

Loved it! instant sub from me! The He-1 is like it's quieter, but still louder at the same time without being quieter or louder.. the sheen and depth at the same time is delicious. Makes the others sound woody and boxy in comparison through my Neumann NDH 30s

Electrostatic speakers have a reputation for being very transparent. It is also notorious for limiting your position relative to the speaker and limited dynamics and bass, so headphones are ideal because they are right at your ear and don’t need to be driven hard to get volume and dynamics. I don’t know if these work like other electrostats, but I wouldn’t want that much voltage/amperage around my head.

The best headset I have ever personally auditioned was in the late 1980’s. It was a set of STAX Kogyo pro electrostatic ear speakers with its own matched tube amplifier. At that time they were $20,000. The sound stage was incredible. Of course the dummy head recordings they used to demonstrate them are amazing and favor ear speakers. I do still use STAX Kogyo ear speakers for my personal listening, although not the $20k model. I’d fly to Buffalo too! ❤

Just got this video suggested. Nice review! Listening on a pair of AKG K701s, it's actually the 6xx that sounds most 'neutral' overall and open in the top end, whereas the HE-1 sounds like there's a Loudness button being pushed on :O

actually this is a praise of the DAW world and digital recordings. All information is in there. If your speaker/headphone is good enough it will reveal it (if its recorded well off course!). That being said the HE-1 are an interpretation of sound. So if you like how they do it they are ultimate.

Great Video. Been into headphones and speakers for 30 years or so. I havent heard the HE-1, as they werent available during my peak head-fi journey. I have heard HE-90 system, but preferred my friends Stax SR-007 mkII and SR-009 powered with a Blue Hawaii amplifier, with a pair of active subs in the room :) pretty epic. I have owned HE600 for decades and they are great, but people mentioning them here ... not the same league sorry. These days I mostly use my active speakers and my IEMs, powered by diy dac and amps.

I wouldn't normally comment on potential clickbait YT videos (which videos aren't these days) but was genuinely impressed with this video, and the presentation of the sound. Even with my Nokia earbuds (which I'm personally impressed with), I could hear the difference of the HE-1's. I tried some really high-end Grado's a few years ago but wasn't particularly impressed with the sound for the price. I need to find somewhere to listen to these properly and then maybe find a big bag of money!? I do agree with the presenter though; those HD6XX headphones sounded very good through the video.

I know I'm super late on this, but the "song" I would listen to would the Mozart's Symphony #9. I always get chills and overwhelmed with emotion when I hear it, which is why I think it was the PERFECT choice for the first song John Preston (Equilibrium) ever hears. As for the sample bits, the XX's seemed really "tinny" when compared to the others. Almost having a bit of distortion or graininess like old-school music did. The HE-1's were superb, from what I could get through my Razer BlackShark V2 Gaming Headset.
