This system works great with my Canon Rebel T5i, but it was gold for me while acting on stage. I needed a small, easy to hide unit with no antenna that could be damage while performing in a play at Cleveland State University. All the other actors were wearing regular wireless mics but my character -a hostage strapped to a chair, was a very physical role being roughed around and getting wet. So I took a chance and ordered a unit. Love it! The transmitter easily hid in a microphone belt on my back under my t-shirt (and under a full business suit on initial scenes) with the mic wire running up behind my neck and pinned just above my forehead's hairline (I have shoulder length hair). The mic worked like a charm and the sound quality was better than the other mics. The unit was on for two and a half hours without any battery problems. Now we are considering getting more units (and hoping for the price to go down) Still, for live stage, I highly recommended it.

Hi Curtis. Thanks for another informative review. I bought two sets of these a month ago for my church and they have worked well for the last three Sunday services. I got the lavaliere set with the XLR audio out on the receiver because they plug into our mixing board. Problem is, we rent our space for only four hours each Sunday. Everything gets packed away into a box and stored in a self-store garage with no mains power for recharging. My solution for recharging is to purchase a rechargeable power bank so we can pack the four devices plugged into the power bank and they can recharge at their leisure. Each week, when we set up we will plug the power back in so that it recharges during the service. The Sennheiser Product Information sheet informed me that each device has a 850 mA-hr rated at 3.7 V which is 3145 mW-hr so I'll need a power pack with at least that capacity times four, or 12580 mW-hr . I could keep the two receivers plugged into a charger the whole time they are in use. I don't know if that would keep them fully charged but it would reduce the recharge power overall. I measured the current a fully-charged receiver consumes when operating as 240 mA at 5 V. That's 1200 mW. A receiver at about half-charge pulled 410 mA when off and charging. When on and charging it pulled 480 mA. I'm not sure I can draw an accurate assessment of how much having them plugged in while in use will extend their battery endurance or reduce their charge consumption from the battery pack. Oh, they only send one charging cable with a transmitter/receiver set, so you'll have to pick up another cable if you want to change them at the same time, which do.
Hi Robert, good idea to use USB Batteries to charge them after service. And good point re: only one included cable - that can create a bit of a recharge bottleneck.

Very nice and thorough review. I chuckled quite a bit when you we’re doing the range test and breathing heavy. I’ve done some vlogging with the XSWD, and one other note to mention is that the clipping system is better on the Rode Link. The XSWD is not good when placed in the back pocket. I vlog placing it in my front pocket to avoid it unclipping and dangling from my back pocket. Overall, I’m happy with it when vlogging with my GoPro7, Oly EM5ii, and Canon EOS RP. It’s fast to set up, but construction is quite weak. The threading that connects the 3.5 input for the receiver will not screw on and connect, and this is my second set that does that. I returned the first set because of that reason, but I’m suspecting this is a consistent reoccurring thing. Please double check you set over time and let me know if your set does that over time. Thanks! Another thing is the construction for my receiver holding clamp is wobbling due to weak plastics construction. Again, please double check your unit over time. And, after seeing your different lav mid, I’m considering buying one that’s smaller because people sometimes stare at my mic clipped around my neck area. LOL!!!

Thanks Heng! This one is just on loan from B&H so I need to send it back. So thanks for the info on how well the plastic holds up (or rather doesn't) over time.

Nice review, with spot-on counselling about dos and don'ts. Aside from all technical aspects and features, I see this new product range as a key for non-sound-specialists to step right in good-sounding videos/presentations/mini-gigs, etc. After years as an actor, I know a thing or two about how to mic a talent, on a set or a stage... and the hassle of it all. But I'm also an entertainer and host/presenter... thus having the "joy" to install / set /adjust / troubleshoot my own soundgear. And boy is it giving me headaches sometimes !!! I've always managed to get great results, and sometimes was being requested as the good samaritain pulling out collegues from "technical traps". We all know these old venues, shops, theatres, conference halls, event places... where sound system was installed by no-one-knows-who, with some obscure gear, decades-old basic loudspeakers, pinched cables, dusty-crusty amplifiers, karaoke-type mixers, etc. In such places, you can easily lose 2 hours trying to figure where is what, and how to get the thing to sound decent. If ever ! In such places and situations, having to just plug-press-pair-run is more than mind-relaxing. The clever folks at Sennheiser know how to conceive gear and whom for... I guess they've just done it once more.

Great review! Good point about the inability to reduce the output level. Otherwise it looks good, but I'm hesitant to ever buying a device, other than a phone or a USB battery, with a built in non replaceable battery. I once bought some flash triggers from a reputable brand that only saw light use, and after three years the built in battery wouldn't charge anymore. So that was 300 USD worth of "disposable" flash triggers down the drain. A built in battery basically sets an expiration date on the device based on the longevity of the battery - unless the device is so popular that after market battery replacement service is available - like it is for phones. And then there's the challenge of not being able to quickly swap out batteries if the device runs out of power while you're using it - as you already pointed out. I like the size, and I'm sure it's a fine device, but I prefer replaceable batteries.

Hi Josh, you can use any microphone with a 3.5mm TRS plug for Sennhesier. I prefer the included microphone over the Aspen mic. But you can use third party mics, they just need to be specifically wired/terminated for Sennheiser (often they will say for Sennheiser Evolution Wireless G3/G4).

Usual high quality, concise and informative review. Thanks Curtis. The sound from the Sennheiser XSW-D in this review seems lacking in fidelity and poor bass and clarity. It would be interesting to hear a comparison with the RØDE FilmMaker Kit. I would expect the RØDE to sound much better. You could also compare it with a different Lav plugged into the XSW-D. Great review -- But one thing that I was hoping you would mention is how it compares to in sound quality to say EW100 G3 lavs... I am attracted to the xsw's form factor and the fact that it seems made for cameras like the BMPCC 4k the Rode that you compare it to is not so attractive to me for the exact reason (form factor) but I have been relatively happy with the sound I have got from my EW100 G3's and if you think that this sound is comparable that may be enough for me.

Very good review. If you had said 2 years ago what would be my run-n-gun dream replacement for a Sennheiser G4 system, this XSW system would be a dream come true. It just works and for a no muss no fuss git er done video shoot, this is amazing. Would I use this if I was in a studio and had plenty of time for audio setup, no way. @curtisjudd3 жыл бұрын
All of these 2.4GHz consumer wireless systems will have interference issues if there's a lot of wifi or other wireless activity in the same location. The Sennheiser and RODE might be a little better, but they're not a panacea, definitely not perfect either. When the person wearing them turns, the RODE in particular tends to drop the signal. Congratulations on the review. Very good! I really like the sound of Sennheiser. Today (2002), comparing the Sennheiser XSW-D x Rode Wireless GO II, which would you choose? I saw dozens of reviews and I still have doubts. The RW GO II system is very good and comes with dual channel. But I still think the Sennheiser sound is better. The problem is that to have a "dual channel" on Sennheiser you would have to buy 2 kits. I work with the Zoom H4n Pro and would use the RW GO II or XSW-D on it instead of the camera (most of the time).

@@curtisjudd Okay! Thanks for the answer. 1 question about the GO II: I didn't see any review with it being used on a recorder, like the Zoom H4n Pro, for example. How can the GO II be configured it might be confusing to use it in a recorder? Why would I have to do two settings? As far as I know, using the XLR input is better for the sound. More quality. Therefore, in short films I would think of the GO II connecting to a recorder through an XLR - P2 adapter. In journalism works, I would use it directly connected to the camera. Sorry for so many questions. I'm a little "lost", with many doubts, and in need of tips.

Nice review as always ....You'd probably be the only youtuber who's tested this. With the previous Sennheiser Wireless kits (G2 and G3), you set the sensitivity on Canon cameras (70d, 80d) to just 1 click above zero so Canon's preamps didn't kick in and clip. Do you have any idea if it is the same with this or what I should set the settings on?
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you'd use the same process except that with the XSW-D, you cannot reduce the output level so you'll start with the camera's input level at one notch below off, and move it up if needed to optimize the levels (aiming for peaks at -12dB, -6dB at the most). Best wishes!

Hi! Thank you for the review! One question: AFAIK using a XLR cable is good if you are using a microphone attached to a long cable. The longer the cable, the more likely to get interferences, hence the XLR cable. But, in wireless mode, would using a XLR cable make sense or give any relevant benefit? For example, in this video you use a XSW-D mini jack receiver connected to the camera: would it make sense to use a XSW-D XLR male receiver connected to a Zoom H4N?
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Hi, no, I don't believe the XLR adapters makes a balanced connection, just allows you to feed the audio into an XLR input such as on a Zoom H4n or a pro-level camera.
@dhoneybeekingdom78894 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd thanks for your quick response! Do you know if the XSW-D mini jack could be connected to the Zoom or any other pro recorder rather than the camera?

Very informative review, thank you. I recently purchased two of these mics, a Tascam dr 70d, two xlr cables and an audio adapter to plug into my iphone, which splits in two for headphone and mic use. Im brand new with audio use and Im filming a movie on my iphone x using the filmic pro app and have to mic up about 4 actors. I am wondering where I would plug the receiver into in this case, the phone or the Tascam? Also what do i plug into the EXT IN 1/2 port on the tascam? Anything else you feel I need to know regarding this scenario would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi COMA RECORDS, With two of these, you'll probably be best using a 3.5mm to XLR adapter to feed the Sennheisers into the DR-70D recorder.

I have an early sennheiser m2 lavalier wireless system. I use a Sankan microphone instead of the me-2. I would like to pick up this new system. I see you have a Sankan mic. Will that work w the new, simple sennheiser wireless. Like you, the sennheiser me-2 doesnt work on my voice. Great video.

Yes, as long as the Sanken is wired for Sennheiser wireless - TRS locking - should work great with this as well.

Fantastic review, thanks a million. Quick question (since you placed the RODECaster Pro nicely in the background): I both have the Sennheiser XSW-D and the RODECaster Pro but cannot get them to work together. The output level on the Sennheiser seems to be too low for the RODECaster. Is there a way to make them work together properly?

Hi Dominic, I'd test that here but unfortunately, I no longer have the XSW-D - I borrowed it to make this review. Sorry I couldn't help more.

@Curtis Judd Many thanks for your quick feedback, even a year after this topic was new. Highly appreciate it. I was able to solve it - all it needed was "just" a DI Box. A passive one was actually enough (I am now using this one here which has two channels per box: dbxpro.com/en/products/djdi) - I guess the Sennheiser XSW-D gives us an unbalanced signal which the RODECaster Pro is unable to handle (although it apparently works with some of the RODE wireless systems).

Someone must make an in-line passive pad (attenuator). Here's an article on how to build your own. www.uneeda-audio.com/pads/
@curtisjudd5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hooltaj, technically, yes, but then your audio is going through a couple of gain/attenuation stages which generally is not great for audio quality. Ideally, you just want to do that once, straight into the camera.

Thanks a lot Curtis! Would you recommend using the XSW-D (XLR set) to export from a Zoom F4 field recorder to a Canon C100 camera? I've tested and sound in the camera is very metalic. Yet when I go straight from the mic to the camera, it doesn't do it. So I was wondering if this would not be designed to be used with a field recorder. Any thoughts?
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthieu, the F4 outputs line level and the transmitter expects mic level I think - I didn’t use the XLR version. You might check to see if the TX can accept a line level signal and if so switch to that. Best wishes!

@@curtisjudd HI Curtis, I made some checks and the reason of the saturated sound was due to linking the F4 to the camera through the mic entry... Curtis, thank you so much for this helpful video. One idea, around 7:47, you mentioned the input level is a bit high for some of the Panasonic GH-series cameras. Do you think passing the audio through a Zoom H1 (or a similar device) be able to act as an attenuated (as well as providing a backup track)?

@@curtisjudd Thank you so much for taking your time to help me, and so many other people, through your KZbin channel! If I may, one more question: If I can only afford 1 wireless mic setup at this time, what if I were to get the all XLR version (XLR transmitter and receiver) of the XSW-D... ...Then if I need to plug into a 3.5mm input, I can get a 3.5mm to XLR adapter cable to (also) attenuate the signal? NOTE: The reason I know many of these adapter cables attenuate is that I have tried several of these cables and was initially DISAPPOINTED that they reduced the mic level. In THIS case, however, it may be a benefit! Then, on the TRANSMITTER side, I could use it for either a handheld XLR mic, an XLR lavalier (such as the Audio Technica Pro 70) or if I need to use a 3.5mm lavalier, could I use a Rode VXLR adapter?
